DS411 Slim flash is corrupted and it's bricked. Please help install Debian.
September 18, 2023 01:42PM
Hi,

few days ago my Synology DS411 slim got bricked. After few restarts kernel booted from flash but it hang and some point.
I made flash dump using md.b and I captured it using minicom. Then I edited img file, I replaced ramdisk and zimage and flashed to serial flash using u-boot. I uploaded img file using tftboot. After this operation. DS411 slim is not booting at all. I desolderef flash memory, I have read it using EZP2019+ programmer and I compared it with both, unmodified flash dump and modied one. In both cases, u-boot section was not changed so I think that I have dumped wrong u-boot data somehow. Now my DS411 slim is bricked and I cannot find stock u-boot.img file. So. Here are my questions:

1. Can someone send me stock DS411 slim u-boot?
2. If not, can someone help me to install Debian + compile/get another working u-boot image?

So far, I tried few u-boot's from bodhi, and one for NSA235 seems to work. I even booted kernel, however, It panicked. Can someone help me to get my box work again?

If you want to boot Debian with th NSA325 u-boot, post the entire serial console boot log (from the kwboot command to the kernel panic).

If it booted then the panic is most likely not something big (most of the time it is related to the rootfs).

Do you have any idea what can be wrong?
Re: DS411 Slim flash is corrupted and it's bricked. Please help install Debian.

There are 2 errors in this boot. By default, the new u-boot expects the uImage be the original one without the DTB embedded. The real fix is a 2 step process (u-boot and rootfs).

So try this quick fix in 1 step first, and later we'll do the real fix.

Run kwboot, with the USB rootfs attached, power up, and interrupt u-boot at count down and

setenv dtb_file
Also get the current listing of envs:
printenv
And then boot
boot

Ok, I'll do that tomorrow because I already left my workshop. Thank's for quick replay and your help. I really appreciate it.

this is what u-boot prints with printenv command. I already used command setenv dtb_file before printing.

And voila! After this change, kernel booted correctly!

Before we go too far, please try running the same kwboot test again, but this time use this new Synology 411j u-boot:

This u-boot does not work. There is no u-boot console displayed after sending image.

I don't know if that's a problem but DS411j have diferent SoC and less DRAM. Find attached file.

Also slim has DDR3 and j has DDR2

That's OK. 6281 and 6282 are nearly identical. And less DRAM should be OK.

> Also slim has DDR3 and j has DDR2

I did not look at the specs closely. That's most likely the reason it does not work.

========

The NSA325 u-boot can only be used to kwboot, it cannot be flashed permanently. This 411Slim has 4MB SPI flash and also only 256MB RAM. So it is just a way to boot into Debian, and do recovery, the sysem will crash at some point when you use more than 256MB RAM.

So the next step is to either:

1. Find stock u-boot image for this box, and flash it to the SPI flash. Like you mentioned in the first post "I cannot find stock u-boot.img file"

2. Rebuild stock u-boot from GPL source, and flash it.

3. I'll build new u-boot for this box. It will not be a full blown version, but hopefully it will allow booting with Debian rootfs on USB. I just did one for the 411j (still waiting for testing report). If I can find a few hours in the next couple days I'll do that.

Re: DS411 Slim flash is corrupted and it's bricked. Please help install Debian.

I modified u-boot to use 256mb of ram using existing NSA325 configs and compiled it (I used crosstool -ng to build toolchain). It worked, U-Boot showed 256MiB at start. However after trying to to apt update, linux hanged. I started to think that maybe there is a problem with PIC16F uC wihich is mounted on PCB so I tried to read flash to check if maybe corrupted and resets 88F6282. Unfortunatelly I ereased flash completly so now board is bricked for good. It was locked for read and when I accidentaly changed config bit to remove lock, flash got erased. This uC was responsible for whole startup sequence including controling LEDs and buzzer. Thank you for your help but I think it's time to throw out this box :)

Perhaps you can just kwboot with the NSA325 u-boot. And change the kernel bootargs to limit it to 256MB. And run Debian that way.

Flash is not important at all. What's more important is the kernel DTS must be correct. And this board has been in mainline Linux for a long time. I believe the DTS is good enough.

Hi. I have the same problem but i cant reach my nas with tty from rpi.
I purchased that if thats can solve the problem. PL2303ta usb-ttl

Can you to help me?
I also followed the tutorial what i found but nothing works.

Krisztian12005,

Try crossing the TX and RX wire (connect RX of the module converter to TX on the board, and TX of the module converter to RX on the board). If it does not work, swap the wire connection.

It still doesnt work sadly. I used that command
 kwboot -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyAMA0 -b uboot.2017.07-tld-1.nsa310s.mtd0.kwb -p
and still says
Sending boot message. Please reboot the target...
Firstly i powered on with the power button then i sent the command after that i powered off with disconnect from the psu and then reconnected it then i pressed power button.

You should verify that your serial console work first, if possible.

And also try this ARM 32-bit kwboot version (it might work on the rPI).

I downloaded the kwboot file. But i cant run it. I added execute permission to the file and i tried to run it with
 ./kwboot
the file was in the current directory and the linux says

pi@raspberrypi:~/tools$ ./kwboot
-bash: ./kwboot: No such file or directory
How can i try out the serial port?

Try running picocom/minicom as a normal serial console (instead of kwboot). If the box u-boot image is not corrupted, it will show the u-boot log. In this case, you'd know the kwboot session is not working, but the serial console HW is OK.

picocom --b 115200 --f n --p n --d 8 /dev/ttyAMA0

It's hard to test the connection if you don't have another box with serial console to test the module converter itself. But you could loop TX and RX on the module converter and type something, it should echo back.

Hi, nothing was came out to the terminal.
What I did:
Started picom
Turned on the Nas (cable connection: TX-TX, RX-RX)
Waited about 30 minutes.
Am I doing something wrong what i didnt noticed about?

With this converter (Prolifc PL2303x), I'm quite sure that was wrong connection. You must cross TX-RX and RX-TX.

Also check the rPi dmesg to see if there is any error with the converter itself. Shutdown, unplug the module converter. Start the rPI, log in and plug in the module converter. And
dmesg

Hi,
At the dmesg is found something about ttyAMA0
[ 1.602488] fe201000.serial: ttyAMA0 at MMIO 0xfe201000 (irq = 36, base_baud = 0) is a PL011 rev2
Is it good right?
Also i switched the cable from TX-TX & RX-RX to TX-RX & RX-TX
Started the picocom with that command
picocom --b 115200 --f n --p n --d 8 /dev/ttyAMA0
I turned on the ds411 slim nas and on the console nothing was came out.

I'm out of idea! perhaps you can find another board that you can connect this serial module converter to, and see if it works with that box. If it does not work then the converter itself is bad. If it does, then perhaps the serial header on this DS411 Slim is bad.

I've seen a serial converter is bad out of the box before (purchased for 3 USD from China). I own 3 converters now just make sure I always have a good one. You'll get what you paid for :)

I use this device for most serial connections https://www.crowdsupply.com/signoid/muart. It isn't exactly cheap, and requires you to connect the power pin, but it also has some features that I find useful.
  • Complete galvanic isolation
  • Reverse polarity protection
  • over-current protection
  • voltage auto-sensing
  • working voltage from 1.8-5.4V
  • up to 3Mbaud transfer speed
