Odroid Devices ?

Just got Odroid C1 , anyone here would supporting with recent updates ?

Just got mine really fast especially in network performance

Out of all the ARM boards I've looked at the Odroids I liked the most - Gigabit ethernet plus powerful CPUs :D

The tiny watch sized board I was super impressed with the power for the price ... Odroid W

Can't be of any assistance, though, as I don't currently own one ... they provide Ubuntu distros for download ... converting to Debian shouldn't be all that difficult ?

I think Hardkernel/Odroid has their own forums too ... Be interesting to see how you get on, as I prefer Debian to Ubuntu.

Yes I'm currently running Ubuntu LTS 14.04 they are yet to build Ubuntu Server which they say going to happen this week but still a clean image of Debian is what im looking for.

@dinjo - afraid that's beyond the limits of my experience or hardware I have available - maybe one of the others here can help ...

I don't think there's a great deal of difference between Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server, aside the user interface. I'm fairly sure that the user interface could be "uninstalled" with apt-get remove ... so probably you could build that yourself. There may even be howtos out there for people who want a server instead of the desktop.

Ubuntu is a very close relative of Debian, I don't think there's much that can be done on Debian that can't be done on Ubuntu.

Good luck anyway - the Odroid C1 I'd like to have one myself, shipping and costs are issues for me where I am.

Hardkernel would be giving away some C1 in Feb to contributors.

LOL ... a bit of catch 22, I'm unlikely to be a contributor without having some of their hardware :)

Ubuntu Server is basically Ubuntu's version of a net-install/minimal distro. Only the core packages you need the most to get set up on a new machine. Some people prefer it over running something like Debian Sid for the newest or Debian Wheezy for the most stable. It's the middle ground between the two, maintained, timely updates and stable.

I removed some packages the gui ones but after update it asks to install why does it keeps asking?

Without knowing exactly what was installed and what you removed, hard to say really ... plus this is a Debian forum :D

Google is your friend for these types of issues, Ubuntu have their own forum and there's plenty of guides for things like removing the GUI. Stack exchange also often has answers to these kinds of questions.

Another option would be to have the Ubuntu installation boot to console (and leave the GUI in place). I did this on one Debian machine where I need the GUI rarely. 99.9% of the time I ssh into the box from another computer.

I might have to pick up a C1 also :)

I purchased two Odroid C1, so will be looking into Debianising in the near future :D

The only other thing which I liked for the money was the Banana Pi which has SATA and Gigabit ethernet, but I decided quad core was better than dual core and SATA could be done via USB.

Odroid do seem to be leading the field in terms of price and specification ...

Haven't got around to doing anything with my Odroids as yet. However someone (I think an Odroid forum member) has posted a GIT that allows building a basic bootable Debian flash image - https://github.com/tomuta/debian-mini-odroid-c1

So probably this is the answer to the OPs original question.

As an update I'm currently running Debian jessie on Odroid C1, using this script to generate wheezy bootable .img - https://github.com/tomuta/debian-mini-odroid-c1

I found the Odroid C1 to be very quick - impressed with the speed of the device, boot times etc. It's been stable now for 24 hours, and if my previous experiences with ARM anything to go by, then probably a lot longer. I used a Sandisk Ultra 16GB micro SD card for OS install. Also made a 10GB f2fs partition for "data". Would probably recommend increasing the boot and root partition size, which I did with gparted. f2fs is still problematic, so I've stuck with the ext4 root partition provided.

The power cable/connector I had some difficulty in obtaining. It seems it's an odd size, larger and smaller plugs won't fit or won't power the board. So might be worth ordering AC adapter with the Odroid when you buy. Or at least get the exact same size power plug ...

The case is pretty neat, snaps around it nicely and protects from short circuits etc. So another extra I bought.

I didn't much like the molex connector for serial connection. Although I was able to persuade my serial cable's connectors onto the pins. Pinouts can be found here - http://i14.servimg.com/u/f14/15/28/97/24/uart10.jpg

I bought the heatsink for both my boards, as yet haven't fitted and not sure I will. The CPU and ram aren't particularly hot at ambient 27 deg C that it is here. I'll monitor the situation and can fit later anyway.

The board is virtually identical form factor to Raspberry PI, ie size of credit card or packet of cigarettes. You could run off a lion battery if you wanted a portable device, maybe pentesting. It has hdmi port and pretty powerful video/graphics capability so could be a media player. And so on, possibilities are relatively endless !

I chose the board because it's quad core with gigabit ethernet. The closest rival was banana pi which benefits from sata port, but is only dual core.

Nice to haves on C1 would have been pcie sata and usb3. But for the cost, the size and the power consumption, I have NO complaints ...

Odriod have been clever to market accessories too, which I feel is generally a plus, and best to buy at the same time you buy the board to save on shipping.

I've found the Odroid forums pretty helpful, and active.
