Bricked my Dockstar - will serial access help?

looks like I managed to brick my Dockstar: I cannot access it via SSH any more, but it still reacts to pings. The PogoPlug Service cannot find it either. It should still run the original firmware.

I assume that by connecting a serial cable to it, I should be able to get into the bootloader and/or firmware. But I thought to ask first before I waste my time: is this correct? When I have access over the serial cable, do I have other possibilities than to download another firmware via TFTP? Can I login into the system directly after boot?
