reformedfan,

Something wrong in the rsync setup. rsync should not try to back up /sys.

Did you use my instruction in the Wiki thread to set up rsync?

I'll check the config for rsync, I used the "on demand" one. Anyhow, once validated, I can --exclude /sys/ if needed. All in all, all working now. Env has been committed to NAND, used MDADM to fix the RAID as it was degraded, Samba configured. so far so good and almost ready to help the next person :)

Next steps (views welcome)

1)DNLA/UPNP media service, iOmega used Twonky Media server,
2)way to alert on Disk / Raid issues - thinking email service (postfix?)
3) Apple time machine
4)any other cool tools with low footprint?

Install minidlna from Debian repo.

apt-get install minidlna

There are many examples on the Internet for settings up Gmail with smartctl daemon.

I'll have to look for my notes. I've done this quite a long time ago, but never actually used it daily (my wifi was too slow back in the days). But using it with Ethernet connection is decent.

Quick one as I am being thick. Trying to set up the device so you can ping by hostname (FQDN). eg. hostname.local

>Interface is DHCP - and the file has a basic entry [iface eth0 inet dhcp}
>resolve.conf is the local router (DHCP/DNS) [nameserver 192.168.1.1]
>Hosts file only has the loopback and local hostname. I dont want to start adding to this file

Do I need a DNS forwarding service or something, or have I just missed something out?

Thanks
Matthew

Quick one as I am being thick.

Not at all :) good question.

This hostname capability is provided by avahi. And it is already installed in the basic rootfs.

Updated 25 Aug 2019:

Basic Debian buster Kirkwood rootfs for most Kirwood plugs:

- tarball size: 209M
- install size: 536M
- The init system used in this rootfs is sysvinit . To boot with systemd, see note 2 below.
- Installed packages: nano, avahi, ntp, busybox-syslogd (log to RAM), htop, isc-dhcp-client, dialog, bzip2, nfs server/client, iperf, ethtool, sysvinit-core, sysvinit, sysvinit-utils, u-boot-tools, and mtd-utils.
- see LED controls in /etc/rc.local, and /etc/init.d/halt
- see some useful aliases in /root/.profile
- root password: root

In your local network environment the host name is broadcasted by avahi. Your MacOS boxes would see it as nameofhost.local (it is debian.local if you have not changed hostname after installation).

So go ahead and ping it, or ssh in.

ping nameofhost.local

or
ssh root@nameofhost.local

See if you get response in either cases.

Hi,

It really wierd,

This Debian, rootfs host doesn't resolve names. I have a few raspberry pi's (raspbian) and these work. I have crossed checked the following files and nothing seems majorly different.

/etc/nsswitch.conf
   /etc/resolv.conf
   /etc/hosts
   /etc/network/interfaces
   /etc/avahi/avahi-daemon.conf

The Pis resolve hostname.local (ping) for all of my 100 + hosts on my home network (haha) but this one doesn't:

uname -a
Linux iomega 5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 #1 PREEMPT Sat Aug 17 15:00:56 PDT 2019 armv5tel GNU/Linux
Re: Debian on iomega storcenter ix4-200d: succes!

Matthew,

Reboot the Store Center. Sometime a reboot will help. Check the syslog, there should be avahi activities toward the end of the log.

Or filter out avahi log:
logread | grep avahi

And ping or ssh the hostname after the system is up about 2 minutes or later.

Matthew,

Is this box behind a wireless bridge?

For reference, I alsway log in to these NAS boxes from my MacBook laptop with hostname.local. Once in a long while, some of the boxes behind a wireless bridge did not advertise their host names through, for whatever reason (dmesg or syslog did show anything strange). A wireless bridge reboot cleared it up.

Hi,

The plot thickens. The host (ix4-200d), can ping IPs and resolve external host names like www.google.com. it can't resolve internal hostnames if you append .local.

e.g ping hostname.local

My other linux devices work ok (raspberry pi's).

I have done an "apt update on avahi"

It is not the end of the work, just frustrating
Re: Debian on iomega storcenter ix4-200d: succes!

Matthew,

I think it might have something to do with avahi hosts.

Normally host names should be OK without workaround. But it does not hurt to force the hosts list to contain its own name and other in the network.

First, add the ix4 and the MacOS box or any box (you want it to see the ix4 as hostname.local) to the avahi list of hosts in
/etc/avahi/hosts
(IP address and hostname.local)

And reboot the ix4.

If that is not enough, add those same hosts to the /etc/hosts
/etc/hosts
(IP address and hostname)

Back with a SMARTd (smartmontools) email challenge. Email works from command link but not from samrtd.conf. I get the following error:

Originally followed https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-configure-smartd-and-be-notified-of-hard-disk-problems-via-email

I have now tried msmtp, s-nail and mailx.

Any tips are gratefully received. My feeling is that it is a bug!

***FIXED***
removed all mail installs

  apt remove msmtp-mta
  apt remove mailutils
  apt remove s-nail
  apt remove msmtp-mta
  apt remove msmtp

then added Postfix, set to relay to an internal machine that can send to gmail. then installed mailutils

***end***

Fixed the .local name resolution issue by installing: apt install libnss-mdns

Matthew,

Not sure why you need that extra package. It should work with avahi core packages already installed in the rootfs Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2, out of the box.

libnss-mdns is recommended (i.e. not required) package for avahi.

Thanks for the report. If it is helping you making it work in your network environment, then it is great to have. I'll keep that in mind for the next rootfs release.

Create rootfs Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2:

It should works. See the Wiki thread:

One thing to be aware is you will need to run the rootfs on HDD, and have a large swap file/partition (size = 4x the RAM) .
