Slow file copy speed on Debian Zyxel NSA325 v2
November 24, 2015 10:31AM
Gyus any adeas where to dig?

I have latest uBoot and latest linux-4.2.0-kirkwood-tld-1-bodhi kernel.
I had all versions of kernels and uBoots it was slow on all of them.

Two hard drive inside ext4 file copy from one to another 8 MB/s, during copy 100% cpu load.
I remember when I had stock firmare and OS it was aprox 60 MB/s.

root@nas:~# hdparm -tT /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb:
 Timing cached reads:   608 MB in  2.00 seconds = 303.74 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 382 MB in  3.01 seconds = 126.75 MB/sec
root@nas:~# hdparm -tT /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads:   592 MB in  2.00 seconds = 295.91 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 256 MB in  3.02 seconds =  84.73 MB/sec

UUID= /media/toshiba ext4 rw,noatime,discard,data=ordered 0 2
UUID= /media/wd ext4 rw,noatime,discard,data=ordered 0 2

I forgot about your post before. When I can take my nsa325v2 offline, I will try it.

Thanks bodhi. Let me know please.

@andsol,

I've tried it today, and did not see the slow speed you have seen.

/dev/sda1 on / type ext3 (rw,noatime,errors=remount-ro,user_xattr,acl,barrier=1,data=ordered)
/dev/sdb1 on /media/ROOTFS type ext4 (rw,noatime,data=ordered)

hdparm -tT /dev/sdb
/dev/sdb:
 Timing cached reads:   704 MB in  2.00 seconds = 351.79 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 342 MB in  3.02 seconds = 113.38 MB/sec
hdparm -tT /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads:   626 MB in  2.00 seconds = 312.28 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 316 MB in  3.00 seconds = 105.32 MB/sec

Copying a 1.9GB file from one HDD to the other: one direction got about 50MB/s, the other direction was about 60MB/s (my 2HDDs are of different Seagate models).

BTW, close to 100% CPU is actually a good thing (if you box is responsive to other tasks that you do in parallel, there is no problem with that fact). Actually, if it does not consume close 100% CPU while doing this task only, then we'd be worried that something is not right!

What dmesg info about your 2 HDDs look like?

I bought second 3TB WD30EZRX drive yesterday. Took out small 1TB 2,5 Toshiba drive (This one had inproper block positioning).
My results are better now: 40MB/sec From one 3TB to another same model 3TB drive, but not which you have .

Main issue was with wrong block allignment on Toshiba.

Im thinking to set LVM on both hardrives as one space. What do you think about this? Pro/Cons on NAS?

OK so the problem is solved.

I don't really have an opinion on this one way or the other!

The speed of 3TB HDDs usually is slower than the smaller HDDs. So 40MB/s is not bad. My HDDs are 1TB and 750GB Seagate.

@bodhi, one more question, Im trying to setup rootfs on new 3TB disk.
I use GPT, it looks like uBoot cant recognize it. Is that true? I get this:

andsol,

GPT should work fine (it has been since the first u-boot version that I released). You could try to prepare the disk with Linux gdisk to make sure it is formatted correctly.

I found wat was the problem: Wrong environment settings in uBoot, I had non standart sesstions on old hardrive.

Could you add somewhre in FAQ that if you have set in env settings, rootfs load by label, it wont work on GPT.

No, GPT partition table does not have anything to do with the roots label in bootargs that you use for booting :)

Based on what you've said, it seems your u-boot envs or setup configuration still has problem. If you want to troubleshoot it:

- make sure the rootfs partition is labeled rootfs.
- in serial console, get the listing of u-boot envs and post here.
- let it boot all the way and capture the boot log and post here.

the nsa is not bad. your windows operating system from from yourcomputer is not ok, especially win7.
I had the same problem, slow speed between 2 - 9 Mbps.

If you start playzone > file browser
(http://yourip/r51009,/playzone,/)
and see 50MBPS IN FTP, so ... I sugest to use pyload and file browser from nsa, not wondows explorer...
