Switch Seagate dockstar from ARCH to debian
February 12, 2016 04:07PM
Hey all, wondering if someone can point me in the right direction here:

I've got an old seagate dockstar I converted to run ARCH linux years ago. I boot from various USB devices hooked to the 1st USB port (the one that was supposed to be for th dock on top).

It boots the most recent version of ARCH downloaded from archlinuxarm.org, no issues, right out of the box.

BUT, I'd really rather run debian. I have a bunch of Pogo-plug mobiles all running debian & all my other 'real' boxes run debian, so I just don't want to have the 'lone' dockstar being the only one running ARCH. Anyway, it won't boot a debian image.

I have two images I've tried:

debian-wheezy-dockstar-130512.tar.xz

and

Debian-3.14.0-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar

uboot finds the image just fine, the kernel boots, but then we get to

"Waiting for root device /dev/sda1" & it hangs.

I'm guessing that it's either a uboot enviroment parameter, OR that I simply need to update/change the uboot install (it does say "Arch Linux" when uboot starts.
But, not being a u-boot guru, I'm not sure which. I don' want to muck up this old piece of hardware, I'd rather put it back to work.

Anyone? Bueller?

Ahh.. just stumbled across the pointer on migrating from Arch to Debian which points me to this thread: http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,23727

So I need to update uboot basically, correct. An I assume all my questions are answered here if I just start reading & digging?

Sounds like you have serial console? If so, boot up, interrupt serial console and get the envs listing:
printenv

and then continue booting
boot

Please post the entire serial console log here. I will take a look.

Yep, have a serial console cable... here's my printenv

DockStar> printenv
baudrate=115200
bootcmd=usb start; setenv letter 9;for type in usb; do for disk in 0 1 2 3; do if ${type} part ${dis
k};then setexpr letter $letter + 1;run l;
bootdelay=3
bootm=echo Booting from ${disk} ...; run setargs; bootm ${loadaddr};
bootz=echo Booting from ${disk} ...; run setargs; bootz ${loadaddr} - ${fdt_addr};
console=ttyS0
ethact=egiga0
ethaddr=00:10:75:1A:A4:B0
fdt_addr=0x800000
fdt_file=/boot/dtbs/kirkwood-dockstar.dtb
importbootenv=echo Importing environment (uEnv.txt)...; env import -t $loadaddr $filesize
letter=9
load=echo Attempting to boot from ${type} ${disk}:1...;if run loadbootenv; then run importbootenv;fi
;echo Checking if uenvcmd is set ...;if ;
loadaddr=0x810000
loadbootenv=load ${type} ${disk}:1 ${loadaddr} /boot/uEnv.txt
loadfdt=load ${type} ${disk}:1 ${fdt_addr} ${fdt_file}
loaduimage=load ${type} ${disk}:1 ${loadaddr} ${uimage}
loadzimage=load ${type} ${disk}:1 ${loadaddr} ${zimage}
mtdids=nand0=orion_nand
mtdparts=mtdparts=orion_nand:1M(u-boot),-(rootfs)
setargs=setenv bootargs console=${console},${baudrate} ${optargs} root=/dev/sd${letter}1 rw rootwait
${mtdparts}
uimage=/boot/uImage
zimage=/boot/zImage

Was just reading over the various threads, sounds like if I flash it to the lastest uboot referenced in the previously mentioned link, I should be good?

What is the download URL for all the various stuff?

Oh, & to follow up on your other question.. yeah, if I enter 'boot' at the Dockstar> prompt.. same behavoir. Finds the uboot image, then hangs as stated.

No. You don't need to if you don't want to. The linked thread above showed how you can still use Arch u-boot, and boot Debian. Of course you can also update u-boot with my latest version: http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,12381

Yes. Latest u-boot is the above link. And you already have the Debian rootfs 3.14.

If you have question along the way, the first thing you should post is the entire serial console log (from u-boot banner to the point where problem occured). It is a preferred way to troubleshoot problem.

Re: Switch Seagate dockstar from ARCH to debian

craigcoffman,

Problem:

rootfs 3.14 is non-FDT, so the variable fdt_file must be clear so that Arch u-boot will act correctly. IOW, this file should not be in the rootfs. So you need to take out the 2 bold lines below.

console=ttyS0,115200
uimage=/boot/uImage
initrd=/boot/uInitrd
fdt_file=/boot/dts/kirkwood-dockstar.dtb
fdt_addr=0x1c00000
uimage_addr=0x800000
initrd_addr=0x1100000
loadfdt=ext2load ${type} ${disk}:1 ${fdt_addr} ${fdt_file}
loaduimage=ext2load ${type} ${disk}:1 ${uimage_addr} ${uimage}
loaduinitrd=ext2load ${type} ${disk}:1 ${initrd_addr} ${initrd}
set_bootargs=setenv bootargs console=$console root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts
load_debian=setenv type usb; setenv disk 0; run set_bootargs; echo Running loadfdt ...;run loadfdt;
echo Running loaduinitrd ...;run loaduinitrd; echo Running loaduimage ...; run loaduimage
bootm=run load_debian; echo Booting from ${type} ${disk}:1 ...; bootm ${uimage_addr} ${initrd_addr}
${fdt_addr}

Also remove the dts folder from the rootfs, because it might cause problem in the future while using rootfs 3.14.

When you have upgraded the kernel to version 3.17 or newer then this dts folder will be there after kernel installation.

Re: Switch Seagate dockstar from ARCH to debian

I'm leaning towards flashing your latest uboot. Notice below the latest log complains about ## Flattened Device Tree from Legacy Image at 00800000

maybe I've got the wrong file?

here's the latest:

Wiped the disk flash drive I'm using, created new ext2 filesystem (on my Debian desktop box) on it with the rootfs label

extracted 3.14 rootfs from Debian-3.14.0-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar

copied the uEnv_arch_uboot_boot_debian.txt uEnv.txt to the /boot on the new filesystem
edited with vi, removed the two lines you indicated.

moved flash drive to the dockstar & I get:

tried the filesysem from debian-wheezy-dockstar-130512.tar.xz with the uEnv.txt file (edited as suggested) Same behavoir. (Complains about Image NOT being a FDT).

craigcoffman,

OK so you want to install from scratch, then it is quite simple. Change the step below to:

Wiped the disk flash drive I'm using, created new ext3 filesystem (on my Debian desktop box) on it with the rootfs label

extracted 3.18.5 rootfs from Debian-3.18.5-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2

copied the uEnv_arch_uboot_boot_debian.txt uEnv.txt to the /boot on the new filesystem

The 3.18.5 rootfs is already FDT. So no other change is needed to make to uEnv.txt, other than making sure that it uses the Dockstar DTB:

fdt_file=/boot/dtbs/kirkwood-dockstar.dtb

Is there a simple list of download links someplace that I'm missing? I can't seem to find a link to 3.18 fs tar file you mention. Not to be dense, but I'm struggling to find such a list.. just tinyURLS to dropbox buried in various threads.

Bohdi:

the 3.18 worked like a charm Thanks. Would've started with the newer tar-fs if I could found it earlier.

Thanks for your help.

Cool!

Glad you found it in the first post. It's down in previous updated section since we are many releases after that.
