Still trying to get CIFS working, very close.

But now I'm getting this error, pulled from

dmesg

"CIFS mount error: iocharset ut$ not found"

Here's my fstab entry:

//192.x.x.x/mnt/left/movies   /media/movies cifs _netdev,comment=systemd.automount,auto,owner,credentials=/home/testpogo/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,sec=ntlm 0 0

I read somewhere that it's a kernel issue.

Any suggestion, please?

if your system contains nls_utf8.ko module then thats not the problem,

Quick and dirty way as im not near my plugs - been called into work - is do the following

cd /
find | grep nls_utf8.ko ;

This module should be in /lib/modules/4.6xxxx

where 4.6xxxxx is the latest installed kernel.

Thanks a lot, guys. I've been wanting to determine the kernel I'm on for a while anyway, and I think we're there now. The output of Gravelrash's:
./lib/modules/4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1/kernel/fs/nls/nls_utf8.ko

And then I navigated to the directory suggested by bohdi and saw:
. .. 4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1

bohdi, are you game for an absolute starter HowTO on autofs? I'm down and out, trying to get these services to work. But from trying, I've come to find out that the service I really would prefer and need is autofs; not nfs, which is fine, not CIFS, which has been a pain, but autofs. This is what I really need. Any help, from scratch, in setting it up; what files to create, what goes in the files, where in the file, etc. Thanks a lot!

what os is hosting your samba/cifs share you are attempting to access from the plug?

About autofs, in about 2 weeks after I'll have been back to near my plugs, I'll see what I can do. Note that I don't use autofs for anything other than NFS, where I think it is the best tool thanks to its on-demand NFS shares aumounting feature (of course there is some minor flaw and things to be aware of).

ifa autofs is your desiired destination then you will do worse than follow the guidelines here.
