i will redo all the steps i suppose now that i know what to do and what tools i need that were missing.

this is the cable i tried with the esata port, it works on the one laptop that has a esata port

https://www.ebay.com/itm/302215992801

i dont think there is power coming out of that esata port for that cable to work on the dreamplug
because i tried it on 2 dreamplugs

mrc333777 it is highly unlikely that the esata port on the Dreamplug is an "esatap" that is an esata plug with built in power. You usually only find those on laptops and they are primarily for optical drives.

Re: dreamplug

so i hooked the kace m300 ssd to the dreamplug with a usb to sata converter and the dreamplug booted with
Linux debian 6.2.7-kirkwood-tld-1 #1.0 PREEMPT Tue Mar 21 18:52:10 PDT 2023 armv5tel GNU/Linux
can i create another with the 6.2.7 instead of the older Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 ?

so today this came https://www.ebay.com/itm/131407292379

to replace this https://www.ebay.com/itm/302215992801

and the new one with the usb power connection works great and
since there is an available usb port right next to the esata port its
very convenient.

thanks for the help...

Don't use the usb port of Dreamplug to get electricity for your SATA drive. I think it is limited to 0.5A (500mA).

I soldered the 5V to the power supply connector on the motherboard and it worked flawlessly. (2.5" Laptop hard drive, so only 5V is needed)

It is fine for the SSD. Its power usage is like a thumb drive.
