Synology USB-Station 2 ?
November 01, 2016 03:31PM
Hello,

I`ve received a 2nd Synology USB-Station 2 .
Now I wonder which U-Boot fits best ...
Pogoplug V4 ?
Attached the output via serial console (no network configured/attached).

None in my supported uboots is a close match for this box. However, the Pogo V4 is the closest. Try UART booting with kwboot using the PogoV4 uboot.

OK, assumed that too.
With your procedure from:
http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,7852,16859#msg-16859
kwboot works.
Output (your 4.4.0 rootfs) - with USB-Stick in the lower slot - below.

Hmm... same exitcode? Hope this is not because of a non specified root-file system ...

Re: Synology USB-Station 2 ?

dietgert,

That's to be expected. This box does not have NAND flash.

The bright side:

1. You can use the Pogo V4 u-boot to boot the box for recovery purpose.
2. u-boot matches the important aspect of the SoC so it will boot a correct Linux rootfs.
3. We can get it to boot decently, meaning it will work, but probably not all peripherals working.

Need to do:

1. new DTB for the kernel to run this box correctly
2. New u-boot to be able to use the flash, which I'm almost certain is SPI flash. We'll need the GPL source to fully bring up this box. You should look for the GPL source.

How much one can get for this box, e.g. from eBay? if there are more interest from others, I could support this box.

In the mean time, try this to get through the error, see how far the kernel will boot:

- kwboot with Pogo V4 uboot
- Interrupt serial console

setenv mtdparts
setenv mtdids
setenv partition
boot

Oops ... 2016 ...
Forgot that device after a relocation for years!
During cleaning up the cellar, now i found this box again.
So... a new try.
Does look quite well now.
Ethernet is missing, but login is possible, shutdown as well.

dietgert,

Do you know which Ethernet chip is on this box? if you don't have that info, you can open the box and look for the chip. Most likely its label starts with 88E, if it is a Marvell chip.

The datasheet for the 88F6180 (which I'd never heard of before) is available at DtSheet. WikiDevi doesn't currently list any other devices with that processor.

Yes, it is.
88E1116R .

The small USB-port on the upperside is not accessible from the outside.
What may be the purpose for this connector ... hmm...

dietgert,

If it is 1116 it should work. But I see the error early on here:

Net: egiga0
PHY reset timed out

Check the Ethernet cable, make sure it is connected well. And kwboot, interrupt countdown, and ping the router

ping <your router IP>

Ah, I see. Looks like this board use a different PHY base address.

Try kwboot with these following 2 u-boots: iConnect and T5325. They won't work well for this box, just might be good enough to start and then ping the router to see if the Ethernet comes up.

Unfortunately, this didn`t work.
Both create "data trash" after completing kwboot.
With the iconnect uboot the system falls back to boot the synology system at least,
with the T5325 nothing more happened then.

dietgert,

Connect regular serial console and power up. Interrupt stock u-boot and

help
mii
See if we can get anything from stock u-boot.

And if you can, find GPL source for this box u-boot at Synology site.

Sourcecode seems to be on Sourceforge:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/dsgpl/files/Synology%20NAS%20GPL%20Source/1922branch/

1944.pat was not the last Firmware available for this box (1983.pat) however the closest on this site.

Hmm,

during ebay-search for a used kirkwood-box, it came to my mind to boot the USB-Station2 using the DS110j dtb-file ...
Well ...

debian login:

Network is functional. apt-get update/upgrade worked without problems.
I am satisfied for the moment.

Biggest challenge now is to find the correct flash layout.
It is different to the usual kirkwood boxes.

Cool hacking :)

# kwboot -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0 -b uboot.2017.07-tld-1.pogo_v4.mtd0.kwb -p

and then

[ 0.000000][ T0] Linux version 5.14.9-kirkwood-tld-1 (root@tldDebian) (gcc (Debian 8.3.0-6) 8.3.0, GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Debian) 2.31.1) #1.0 PREEMPT Sat Oct 2 17:41:27 PDT 2021

[ 0.000000][ T0] OF: fdt: Machine model: Synology DS110j v10 and v30

[ 14.547555][ T1] mv643xx_eth: MV-643xx 10/100/1000 ethernet driver version 1.4
[ 14.697586][ T94] ata1: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl F300)
[ 15.037504][ T96] ata2: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl F300)

That was a common Kirkwood Ethernet driver.

Biggest challenge now is to find the correct flash layout.

I guess without the stock boot log, it is hard to tell. But there is no need.

Since you know you can boot with the Pogo V4 u-boot, we could just wipe the MTDs on SPI flash and flash this u-boot. It looks like a 1MB SPI flash.

[ 14.369958][ T1] spi-nor spi0.0: found mx25l8005, expected m25p80
[ 14.376443][ T1] spi-nor spi0.0: mx25l8005 (1024 Kbytes)
[ 14.382109][ T1] 6 fixed-partitions partitions found on MTD device spi0.0

Want to try that? you got nothing to lose.

You cannot flash the Pogo V4 yet. It must be recompiled to boot from SPI.

Or you could try kwboot the HP T5325 or the Dreamplug. These 2 are SPI flash u-boots. If it does not care about RAM, then it will boot.

This didn`t work.
Both create "data trash" after completing kwboot.

dietgert,

So I guess I need to recompile the Pogo V4 with SPI option (i.e. like a new u-boot for Synology USB-Station-2 u-boot).

Do you want to try that?

Hello Bodhi,

sorry for the delayed answer.

Yes of course. The DSM 3.2 on this Box is ancient.

dietgert

dietgert,

It might take a while. So in the mean time just run it with kwboot.
