Latest Dockstars Deals, Post your findings here! (Updated 01 Jan 11)
December 27, 2010 04:36PM
For those who thought they missed the boat for the cheaper Dockstars... seems like a bunch just flooded the market.

ebay.com/Seagate-Stdsb10g-rk-Freeagent-Dockstar-Canada-/
ebay.com/Seagate-Retail-STDSB10GRK-FreeAgent-DockStar-Canada-/
ebay.com/STDSB10G-RK-FreeAgent-DockStar-Canada-Seagate-Retail-/

As I consider $30+shipping more than a fair price for these units, hope the rest of you folks can get as many as you wanted.

Update: URLs scrubbed of the auction ID numbers because all three were ended prematurely. Things that make you go Hrmmmm...

Update 2: Changed thread topic to allow this thread more purpose. Post deals if you find any!

FYI - Cheaper if you buy from Beach Audio directly rather than through their ebay store...
http://www.beachaudio.com/Seagate/Stdsb10g-Rk-p-438417.html
$29.98 + $4ship (shipping is free for $100+ orders)
They take Paypal.
Beach Audio is based in Manhattan Beach, California near LA Airport - no idea where they ship from tho.

Disclaimer: I have never purchased anything from this store so ymmv.

I see Buy.com has them for $24.51 + $6.98ship.

These seem to be the STDSB10G-RK Canadian versions.

I got my Netbook from them about 2 years ago via Amazon.com (one of the last places that had the 8GB SSD Linux Aspire One model still available at the time), so I had no issues ordering another dockstar through them after I posted this. (Aside from that they were the cheapest overall.)

Just pleased to see a big lot of these available again after weeks of only seeing individual listings for over $75.

The price is now $34.17 + $6.98 ship

My last one from ebay was $10 shipping to Australia. Anyone see someone shipping to Australia/Internationally, $40 shipping is a stopper. My Dockstar is lonely and needs a few friends.

Guess that "More than 10 available" only applies to when it was first listed. 7 orders after mine and it's sold out.

The second eBay item still has over 190, though. ;) One person bought *70*... probably just to resell them for $80 next month. ;(

It was good while it last. The one with "over 190" ended their auction.
At least I got one from BeachAudio.

All three have ended their auctions. This is bizarre.

At least my order from BeachAudio is showing tracking progress.

Well, for the (presumably few) that managed to order one before all the auctions got yanked, I got mine today... which I ordered from Beach Audio. So no worries about existing orders going unfulfilled.

I ordered one on the 28th and they shipped on the 28th. Even though both BeachAudio and I are in Calif, they ship my order from NJ. Should be here next week.

For those wondering, it's a standard Revision C Dockstar, the ethernet cable that comes with it is more rounded than flat (as was the one with my first Dockstar) and the outside packaging contains French as well as English. Those are the only differences. The firmware tweak/uBoot installer script proceeded without issues and now I have a backup Dockstar ready to run Debian.

I just bought three Dockstars, plus drives and enclosures. (One for me, one for work, and one for a friend)

Canadian version Dockstar (Seems identical to me except for the French on the box) I did not register my Dockstar to use the PogoPlug service, so I don't know if there is a difference there (I expect not.)

The Canadian model is STDSB10GRK (Has a "B" in it instead of an "A")

They are selling and shipping from the US at this link:
http://www.cometsupply.com/mp/SEAGATE/pm/SGTSTDSB10GRK/

$26.51 each plus shipping. I paid $9.99 to ship three of them. ($3.33 each for shipping)
_______________________________________

The hard drive that I use is a 5400 RPM Samsung HM641JI Hard Drive 640GB
Samsung HM641JI from Anteres Pro

$63.99 plus shipping. I paid $9.95 to ship three drives ($3.62 each for shipping)
_______________________________________

The USB 2.0 enclosure that I use is a Kit from Nipon Labs for 2.5" hard drive:
Nipon Labs USB 2.0 Enclosure from NewEgg

$9.99 with Free Shipping
_______________________________________

I have no connection with any of these sites other than I just purchased from them. I ran Jeff's excellent script to install Debian Squeeze (http://jeff.doozan.com/debian/) and it works great! Boots up in Linux with no problem and stays up and running forever (well...you know).

I made my root file system size to be 780MB, Swap Partition to be 256 MB and the remaining 630 GB formatted as EXT3 and mounted as "/home".

I installed Samba and MuddleFTPd and Lighthpptd (to start with) (I also installed Webmin but I think it is pointless)

Creating users with both FTP access and SAMBA access to a huge amount of space is a snap. It runs extremely cool and quiet. I could not be happier.

Total cost per server including shipping: $177.44

Good price, but they appear to be all gone:

Yeah. I saw that, too. The Next Day PC link still appears to have over 400 in stock. $28.07 each. What's odd is they also sell the "American" version for nearly $100.

I've heard that the different version have different amounts of memory. Can anyone confirm this? I have two US versions, that look to be only different by the lan cable it came with and printing on the box. Both have 128MB.

From plugapps.com Hardware:DockStar
Quote

There are 2 known DockStar hardware revisions:
* 100576825B - 512MB NAND
* 100576825C - 256MB NAND
See this thread: Dockstar NAND sizes... check yours. I don't have a 512MB NAND DockStar myself.

FYI -

The PN of the 'Canadian' DockStar I recently got (eBay/BeachAudio) is 100576826B.

I have NOT checked the NAND size yet...in fact, I haven't even opened it yet :)

Opened mine up when I got it, Revision C with 256MB Nand, I'm afraid. But not a big deal since I'm booting everything off USB anyway. I compared it with my own "American" Rev C model and the two are identical aside from a brand difference on the flash itself.

question - does the usb enclosure 'dock' to the dockstar ?

I found a Seagate 500GB 5400RPM matching disk for the dockstar at Fry's for $79.95 which of course docks fine. Debian using Jeff's procedures and mini distro works wonderfully. Key for me is that I want to run off 'spinning' disk that is docked. If that means I need to buy Seagate drives while they're still available, that's ok with me. The cost I paid for an integrated known-dockable solution was probably only $10 or so more than me buying them in pieces like you did.

Lastly, what's the difference between Canadian and US versions of the dockstar ? If we're all working off spinning disk and using the dockstar as the failsafe disk, the internal being either size would be fine probably. All it's used for normally is running the hardware check and u-boot kicking to the spinning disk anyway.

Thanks.

Only Seagate FreeAgent drives are intended to fit in the vertical dock slot with the mini USB plug. The slot itself is keyed, so unless it was the exact same shell made by someone else (unlikely), it probably won't fit. You're going to have to use one of the other standard USB A ports on the Dockstar with the drives you ordered.

None whatsoever. French on the packaging is the most difference you can expect. Jeff's script for installing Debian on the Dockstar worked exactly the same for both versions. The Canadian version was in strict (and Americanized) English, just like the US counterpart. The outside was just packaged for language requirements of its market.

The black model is aka the PogoPlug Pro. 128MB Ram, but has built in Wifi and one internal SATA port.
