Need help install rootfs for Pogo Pro V3
January 16, 2017 05:21AM
Hi,

I hope somebody reeds this message...

I have a pogoplug pro (black model) which I hacked for using Plugbox Linux many years ago. But I lost the USB stick with this software and now my Pogoplug is useless.

Is there someone who has an installation file for the usb-stick to get my Pogoplug pro working again?
I tried the Varkey Debian rootfs installation but not succeeded.

Many thanks in advance!

Rob

Rob,

See first post of this thread. Create USB rootfs and boot with it.

Thanks bodhi,
But no succes! This is what I did (I used my Raspberry Pi to make the USB stick)

I installed the debian-rootfs-pogopro-varkey.tar.gz
I changed the MAC address in the interface file
I boot the Pogoplug with the USB. LED flashes, goes off and on (steady) after a while. But no connection.
I boot again the Pogoplug LED flashes and goes off and stays off.
When I checked the USB stick the rootfs name was changed to a long number....

I hope you can give me some hints....

Rob,

The latest rootfs is : Debian-3.17.0-oxnas-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 (02 Nov 2014) .

Scroll down to the section dated 02 Nov 2014.

Hi bodhi,

I did but again no success...
This is what I did (following the installation procedure):

- step 1 format the USB drive to ext3 and named it rootfs (by gparted)
- sudo su
- step 2
- step 3 dev/root/ext3 because my original installation was at ext3 as well
- step 4 for the pogoplug pro

Because it doesn't connect, I added the MAC address to the network/interfaces file but again no result.
When I start the Pogoplug I see that there is activity on the USB drive... but the LED stays flashing.

I'm not a linux guru so I don't know what else I can do.

I hope you have some (more) hints!

It's very hard if we don't know what was installed previously. Do you keep a log of what you did back then? and perhaps a link to the installation procedure?

If no information available then the only way is to connect serial console, or format a hard disk to by pass u-boot and boot directly into it. If I can find a link to that instruction I'll post.

bodhi,

Yes I agree... Well I found that the original installation was in 2012 and the install script was from:
http://archlinuxarm.org/os/oxnas/oxnas-install.sh which I found on the Archlinux arm site for the pogoplug-pro. But that part of the site is removed.

Do you mean by connecting to serial console, flashing of the pogoplug internal flash memory?

Ah, that's enough info for me. This set up will not boot with the new rootfs without changing u-boot envs.

The problem would become simple when we can interact with serial console. There is no need to flash anything, even. The Pogo V3 usually is very simple to connect serial console, it should have the serial header already installed. You only need the buy the serial converter:

bodhi,

Aha, the serial trick is working! Now I have output. I put the output after Booting below. Debian is asking for a login but when I use root, nothing happens. How can I change u-boot?

bodhi,

Tx won't work, but after changing the USB-RS232 converter I can login. So far so good!
The next problem is that it can't find eth0....

== [....] Configuring network interfaces...Cannot find device "eth0"
== Failed to bring up eth0.

Suggestions?

Rob,

I recognize this is the old hybrid Arch/Debian installation.

To print out the u-boot envs, you need to use blparam (instead of fw_printenv):
/usr/local/cloudengines/bin/blparam

From the Debian Linux shell, you need to install u-boot:
http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,16017

And then boot the newly created Debian rootfs with that.

And BTW, next time, please use code tags to make the post readable!

bodhi,

problems.... I can't find the uboot tar file anymore.... I had extract it in /tmp on rootfs USB om my Rasberry but now the /tmp dir is empty.
I know its also in the rootfs USB Downloads directory but I cant find this folder.
Can you please give me the instruction how to copy the uboot tar file from the rootfs usb Downloads folder into the /tmp directory....

I keep the pogoplug running because I already has done step 6 (erase).

Oh... I'm a bit confused... The Download dir is not on the rootfs but on my RPi.
So I can download the uboot file on another USB stick, put it in de Pogoplug and copy that to the /tmp dir on the progoplug
But how can I do that? That is my lack of Linux knowledge... Please help.

Hi bodhi,

I have succeeded to extract the uboot files from an external USB stick... pffff.
And I made the flash steps w/o errors!
The only thing is that I have added /tmp/ before the uboot images, because those files are in the /tmp/ dir.

I skipped step 12 because I'm using the serial console.
Now I'm at step 13, but how do I print uBoot envs, before I reboot?
Step 14 gives me a MAC address.

Excellent!

Now sync and reboot

sync
sync
shutdown -r now

Thanks bodhi,

When I restart the Pogoplug it stops with booting the kernel. Maybe I have to make a new rootfs USB? Or using an other version for Debian? Or do I have to make a uEnv.txt file because there was a 'not found' error.
Below the startup sequence.

Hmm, not really... How can I change the MAC address? When I try it in the Uboot env I have got a message that it is not possible... I hope this is the last question for you ;-)

Rob,

Congrats :)

1. If you need to use uEnv.txt to boot then it means the u-boot envs were not setup correctly in the u-boot envs area. Please get these listing and post here. In Debian,

dmesg
cat /proc/mtd
fw_printenv

2. Setting ethaddr in u-boot should be ok. Can you interrupt serial console and try it again, post the log from u-boot banner until the error message.

I just ran into this same problem on a "new" Dockstar (thanks, Thomas!). The error message was something like "cannot overwrite ethaddr". After booting into Debian, "fw_setenv ethaddr xx:xx..." worked.

Ah. Thanks JT. It meant the u-boot inernal did not allow it. But our bootargs and DTB did specify it as writeable.

I'll look at this and netconsole strarting problem (in other thread) later.

bodhi,

Thanks! I'm glad my Pogoplug is working again...!

1- Below the listings...

2-This is what I have got when try to change MAC address

root@DebianPro:~# fw_setenv ethaddr 00:25:31:01:DE:8A
Can't overwrite "ethaddr"

Rob,

I'll compile a different version of the Pogo Pro DTB for you to test.

Can't overwrite "ethaddr"

Wow, that's different than my experience on my Dockstar. I got that message when trying to do setenv from the u-boot prompt, but doing it within Debian worked. I have a PogoPlug E02 that I'm about to update the u-boot, so it will be interesting to see what happens there.

JT,

Different boxes. And yours was restricted by u-boot. Rob's was restricted by the kernel.

Either way, I will need to look at these scenarios to rectify t before releasing new version of each.
