Pogo E02 - Want help to update everything - uboot, Debian and linux kernel.

Something went wrong with my transmission version which stopped uploading/downloading suddenly. After wasting a week, I decided to update everything on my pogo plug e02.
I decided to update the uboot first. Then after that I will update the Debian version and linux kernel.

So first, I went to update my Pogo plug E02 uboot to latest version.
I downloaded the "uboot.2016.05-tld-1.pogo_e02.bodhi.tar" file and copied it to the plug's pen drive which has Debian on it.
After the cd /tmp and next command -

tar -xf uboot.2016.05-tld-1.pogo_e02.bodhi.tar

I get error that file is not found.
The file is in root of the pen drive. If I do ls, I can't see the file when I'm connected over ssh to the pogoplug.

If I attach the pen drive to my linux pc I can see the file. What is going on? I ssh into the pogo plug as root@pogoplug-ip-address so I should be able to see the file right? Should I copy the uboot file to a new pen drive formatted as ext3 without anything on it and then update uboot?

Then cd to the root of the pen drive before extracting it with the tar command.

uboot bootlader has nothing to do with your transmission issue.

I'm getting some other output instead of expected output after doing flash erase:

Thankfully, I have original E02 nand dump on my pc when I bought the plug. I just don't have the serial jtag wires. Erase Total 4 Units

This is bad. You should try again. If you can't erase it then this NAND area is not usable.

What are my options if it can't erase?
Should I buy a new device or just upgrade the Debian version and keep using it till it fails eventually? This device is running from so many years continuously, probably it's going bad now due to age.

Can you still boot it? if you can then no need to update u-boot. Just upgrading kernel.

Unfortunately I shut it down when there was a prolonged power cut and my ups was beeping a lot.
Now after starting it, the front led does not glow green (even after half an hour of starting up) but stays off. I can see the pogoplug connected via lan on the router though. I removed the Debian usb pen drive and checked if it would start up, but even here no front led light, just the lan light is on.
So seems its borked. I've bought a usb to ttl cable and it will reach in a few days probably.

What can I get if I cant get this pogo plug to work? Raspi 3?

It is best to connect serial console to see how bricked it is. If there is no LED light during power up, it is not very hopeful. But I can't say for sure until you connect serial console.

I got the usb to ttl cable. These are the ones i got. USB to TTL PL2303

I cant find JST headers anywhere. The ones i saw on amazon (india) was a lot of 20 & almost a few bucks away from a brand new pogo plug v4 with usb 2 port. Not worth buying those many cables.

So I did a hack on the black connectors. I shoved a small piece of copper wire inside them to make the diameter smaller. It does the job but i cannot fit 3 wires side by side. The plastic is too big on these connectors. Is gnd required to be connected or only rxd + txd will do?

I removed all the plastic connectors and wrapped the metal parts with some masking tape. That way i could attach all the wires except 5v one.

installed picocom. can't see anything.
attached rxd and txd and also reversed them. nothing.

guess the plug is dead.

should i get the pogo plug v4 with usb 2 port or the one with usb 3 port?

Yes. It's bricked. The only way now is to use JTAG to unbrick it.

The Pogo V4 with USB 3.0 and the HDD slot on top (more expensive). The one with USB 2.0 is called the Pogo Mobile (low cost but very limited).

Rpi and every other single board computer sells for $50+ in my country.

What device do you suggest that has USB 3 and gigabit Ethernet? I'm guessing only Marvell chips have this. The chips on the single board computer don't have USB 3.

I was thinking of buying the R-Pi 3 b+ model (~$55 for board+case) or Pine A64+ 2GB (~ $55 for board only)
I feel like getting the Pine cause it has more memory. But there's no way to add an external hdd to it without buying extra stuff and tinkering. I read in the forums that it seems it wont boot with anything connected to the usb ports. This board lacks a JTAG pin/header too.

The only 2 things keeping me back from buying any of these boards is the cost and the simplicity of doing things. We have to buy everything else including the case, wires, heat sink and adapter. Plus no gigabit ethernet. Plus the new version of Rpi wants 2.5A power.
In a pogo plug we could just flash uboot and attach a usb hdd with debian on it and set it up to boot with 2-3 usb devices attached. No worries for years. Here in these sbc's we have to do a lot of work to do anything on them. Plus the usb ports (& ethernet) are all on a single shared bus in the rpi. That must seriously affect speeds during writing/reading to storage all the time.

Is 100Mbps fast enough to stream 1080p or UHD files over GBE lan? I want an always on download + storage device where I can attach 2 x 1.5TB USB hdd's and access media content off them. I'm confused what to buy now.

Pogo V4 should be simplest and probably lowest cost (still depending on where you are) when you factor in the power supply and case. True Gbit Ethernet and USB 3.0 on PCI bus (best).

The Pogo V4 is under power with 800Mhz. But as a NAS it is fast enough.

guess i'm out of luck. all i can find is pogo plug v4 mobile for sale everywhere. I did find one v4 series with usb 3 on amazon japan and one in india. But the indian seller is only importing from usa, so he does not actually have one in stock.

I'm thinking of getting the WD My cloud ex ultra. Marvell 385 chip + 1Gb DDR3 + 2x USB 3 ports according to specs. I will buy a diskless system.

If I get this, how can i enable ssh in it? Seems that the company, cloud services has shut down.
As far as i remember, to enable ssh in the device, we had to log in to our account and enable ssh in some settings there.

The Pogo V4 Series will have a Pink Logo with a top SATA Port. I bought them from Adorama through my Friend and brought them to India.

Since i activated years back i can still use them with Cloud even though it was shutdown. I installed u-boot + Debian with fallback to stock pogo OS.

Enabling SSH is not a big deal. It has a back door through which you can always enable the SSH via Curl command. I already did this couple of times. I also have a spare new Pogo V4 unboxed (stock OS). Please message me if you interested to buy and you are staying near Chennai.

This box is basically the same as the Pogo V4 (not Pogo Mobile). But not in the same class as the WD My Cloud EX Ultra. This is small plug computer, very underpower comparing to the EX Ultra. After you install new u-boot and Debian, it will get close to the ExUltra, but still the CPU is slower.

The 12.99 price is very good. It's on fire sale. They are basically dumping stock. And we are benefiting :)

Just to update - I bought the Intel NUC celeron 3050 with 4GB ram. running linux mint off a 64GB sdxc card.

I tried to follow your installation and I think that I have bricked my Pogoplug E02 (pink) to the point where all that happens when I power it up the yellw and green LEDs on the ethernet connector flash once then nothing, I have tried Jtagging into it but to no avail (the screen is black on both "screen" and "putty".

I can seel lots of advice on how to reload Uboot but not how to get to the situation where I can load it to the pogoplug (I need step by step instructions) if anyone out there would have the patience to run me through how to get my Lubuntu machine to talk to my pogoplug and bribe it into booting up I would be very grateful.
