it shows 512MB not 2GB

Huh, not what I was expecting but at least it's correct for this box.

Here's the change:

REG_SDRAM_ADDRESS_SIZE_HIGH_OFFS should be 21, not 18.

after apt-get install build-essential
still not able to build deb

make does not produce a .deb file. From the directory listing it looks like the binary mcm-daemon has been built. Try running it with ./mcm-daemon

please advise me to skip kwboot.

Download the attached file and decompress.

If you run mtd_debug and you see the following, then you cannot proceed:
root@debian:~# mtd_debug info /dev/mtd0
mtd.type = MTD_NANDFLASH
mtd.flags = MTD_CAP_ROM
mtd.size = 5242880 (5M)
mtd.erasesize = 131072 (128K)
mtd.writesize = 2048 (2K)
mtd.oobsize = 64
regions = 0

You must boot with the DTB I posted earlier, which unlocks mtd0 for writing. Make sure the output of mtd_debug matches the below:
# mtd_debug info /dev/mtd0
mtd.type = MTD_NANDFLASH
mtd.flags = MTD_CAP_NANDFLASH
mtd.size = 5242880 (5M)
mtd.erasesize = 131072 (128K)
mtd.writesize = 2048 (2K)
mtd.oobsize = 64
regions = 0

Steps:
 1. kwboot a modified u-boot which saves environment variables to 0x100000 (Download from here)
 2. Inside u-boot, run saveenv
 3. Boot Debian from USB or SATA (see instructions earlier in this thread)
 4. Dump u-boot env to a file (nandread)
 5. Erase u-boot portion of mtd0 (flash_erase)
 6. Flash new u-boot (nandwrite, Download the u-boot attached to this post. Do not try to flash the kwboot u-boot to NAND)
 7. Restore environment variables (nandwrite)
 8. Reboot

Dump u-boot env:
# nanddump -s 0x100000 -l 0x80000 -f ubootenv.bin /dev/mtd0

Then erase the old u-boot and flash the new one to NAND:
# flash_erase /dev/mtd0 0 8
# nandwrite -p /dev/mtd0 u-boot-a38x-GrandTeton_2014T3_PQ-nand.bin

Restore u-boot env:
# nandwrite -p /dev/mtd0 -s 0x100000 ubootenv.bin

Reboot and hope it works! (if not you can always kwboot to recover)

Bodhi will provide the correct bootargs for you so it will attempt to boot from USB, and if that fails it will fall back to booting WD firmware.

Edit: there was a mistake in my instructions. This u-boot is the NAND version, you cannot kwboot it. Please kwboot the previous version I posted which is has 512MB RAM defined. Once booted in Debian, then flash the u-boot attached to this post to NAND to permanently install it.

mcmg2,

It might have something to do with this
Begin: Will now check root file system ... fsck from util-linux 2.25.2

fsck: error 2 (No such file or directory) while executing fsck.ext3 for /dev/sda1

fsck exited with status code 8

Shutdown, bring the USB rootfs to another Linux system, and run check disk, fix errors (answer yes to each question to fix):

Assuming the USB drive is assigned as /dev/sdb1. Look at dmesg output to determine this, it will show that last USB drive inserted and drive letter assigned.

dmesg | tail
And then
umount /dev/sdb1
e2fsck /dev/sdb1

And then sync
sync
Remove the USB drive and put it back to the Mirror Gen2, power up. Let it boot and post serial console log here.

This thread is only about getting u-boot working on the My Cloud Mirror Gen 2. If you have general Linux questions about packages within Debian, please start a new thread.

Let's keep this focused on u-boot.

@bodhi: do you anticipate any differences in the boot arguments for the My Cloud Mirror Gen 2 from the EX4100? Could mcmg2 use the bootcmd you provided for the EX4100 to have USB boot with fallback to internal firmware?

it works great.

it boots to stock without usb and boots to debian with usb attached on port2.

tip for kwboot

you need to solid contact for serial connection. even if you can see the serial log, loose connection needs lots of try.

I use my finger to provide solid connection, once you pass 100% transmission, you don't need to hold it.

no problem to get serial log with loose connection.

mcmg2,

What you said is extremely interesting! I need you to describe a little more.

- which kwboot version are you running. And pls post full the command.
- what type of wire are you using to connect, is there a header or you just connect each wire.
- what serial converter module are you using?
- which end was loosen? The serial port on the MCM Gen2 ? Or the wires at serial converter end?
- how loose the wrires were, ie. how did you discover this was the problem?
- when the wire were loose, serial console acts normal? But kwboot was unsuccessful?
- which binary were you using for serial console? picocom or putty, or other binary?

I am also interested to hear a bit more about kwboot on the MCM Gen 2, since the first posts from mcmg2 showed a lot of trouble getting it to kwboot.

However I want to caution something: I don't think the issues we are having with the EX2100 and EX4100 kwboot are due to a poor connection. You've seen photos of my UART connection, and it's totally solid. Everything I type always ends up in the serial console, whether it's in u-boot, WD firmware, or Debian.

I don't believe that a poor connection to the Rx line of the device is the reason for kwboot not consistently working, at least on the EX2100. saschadd's photos of his UART connection on the EX4100 also seem like it is unlikely there are connectivity issues.

- what type of wire are you using to connect, is there a header or you just connect each wire.
I used pin header in the empty pcb and connect it with serial to ttl cable and it gives serial log. I did not solder it to pcb.

- what serial converter module are you using?
serial cable
but I bought from aliexpress($1)

- which end was loosen? The serial port on the MCM Gen2 ? Or the wires at serial converter end?
pin header end.

- how loose the wrires were, ie. how did you discover this was the problem?
I was trying to kwboot and it happens in less than 5 seconds. sometimes it took me more than 1 hours(I've watched 2episode of suit season5). I touched cable by mistake(of course, my eyes on drama and hands moving from keyboard to power cable of my cloud mirror) and it gives some gabage letter.
so I try to move the cable around to see what happens. and I used finger to give it different angle.
by experience, 90 degree(like soldered on pcbboard) and hold steady with finger works good. it took me less than 5 min try.

- when the wire were loose, serial console acts normal? But kwboot was unsuccessful?
yes, I can see the log from serial cable but kwboot takes forever

- which binary were you using for serial console? picocom or putty, or other binary?
putty

mcmg2,

Thanks! I'm going to list the info in a way that others can easily repeat the tests you've done.

You are using the kwboot_arm that I uploaded. It was buill from u-boot-master source tree updated and built on June 10, with Kevin Smith's fallback patch. And the -f option was used to activate the fallback logic.

./kwboot -f -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0 -b u-boot-a38x-GrandTeton_2014T3_PQ-nand-uart.bin -s 0 -q 1

This male-male pin header was plugged into the empty holes on the board and connected with the femal connectors from the serial converter module.
http://www.ieeebcit.org/product/pinheader10m/

This serial converter module is type PL2303HX and it has 4 female wire connectors.
http://hobbycomponents.com/usb-interface/618-usb-to-rs232-ttl-serial-interface-cable

The pin header end was loosen.

Good test! that brought back some fun memory for me :)) I did that once, holding the wire during a demo to the customers :))

When the wire were loosen, serial console acts normal. But kwboot would take forever.

And putty was used for serial console.

Follow up questions:

Did you connect only TX, RX, and GND?
When you hold the wires, you hold all these 3 wires?

It could make it worse. The serial comm binary such as putty/picom/minicom and kwboot were 2 different programs. kwboot is sensitive to the handshake timing. And kwboot use Xmodem protocols.

I think a lot of time. kwboot did not get a good (i.e. whole) sequence from the server, so it does not send a NACK. I have found another related patch that I might try on the NSA326 later.

Latest released rootfs: Debian-4.12.4-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 (23 Aug 2017)

do I need to apply dtb file to make uImage for myclould mirror gen2 box or just use rootfs from above?

last time installation is like below
cd /media/sdb1/boot

cp -a zImage-4.12.4-mvebu-tld-1 zImage.fdt

cat dts/armada-385-wd.dtb >> zImage.fdt

mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-4.12.4-mvebu-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage

If you did it the last time, then you need to do this at each new kernel installation.

Can you please share the latest patch (any difference for nand/uart?), and the exact name of the GPL package to download?
I would like to test a patch to allow the change of the CPU frequency.

*** edit ***
Managed to compile the uboot by my own, and found that the build process produces both the nand and uart binary.
To anyone interested, you can find attached the useful patch and a script making the process painless.

# Prerequisite:
Download WDMyCloud_Mirror_GPL_v2.30.165_20170321.tar.gz from https://support-en.wd.com/app/products/product-detailweb/p/137 and copy uboot/u-boot-2013.01-2014_T3.0p2.tar.gz and toolchain/armv7-marvell-linux-gnueabi-softfp_i686_64K_Dev_20131002.tar.gz in the script folder

Fell free to test the patch I've tried (unsuccessfully) to enable TWSI and SatR editing from uboot.
Marvell>> SatR read
mvBoardSatRRead: Error: Read from S@R failed
Error reading from TWSI

Does anyone has any idea to manage to change the cpu frequency?
