I always did this test before installing u-boot. But a really bad SPI flash might hose the running u-boot, or cause it to choke.

First, use picocom to connect serial console (to verify that whether the SPI the flash caused the freeze).

simply it opens a connection to the device in a terminal and allows you view the boot up and to type commands on the device as if you were on it.
in debian
connect to device with usb adapter and type
you should see the settings displayed and terminal ready
power on the device
in debian
sudo apt-get install picocom
connect to device with usb adapter and type

This is much better than I thought. So we can see the SPI flash did not have any problem.
The problem booting above is most likely that the stock rootfs was corrupted. And we need to reflash that only.
Let me come back to this topic later and post some recovery instruction.
About why your kwboot was stuck: please check your serial console wires to see if all 3 wires were solidly connected.

I've already flashed the unit with hp recovery files and it seemed to go fine, the unit booted once or twice but it froze shortly afterwards. After that, it wouldn't boot at all.

That is indeed a symptom of some bad flash region in the stock FW.
However, your bootlog showed that it booted pass stock u-boot loading and list the envs OK. So all you need to do is to set up stock u-boot to boot with USB rootfs and all will be OK.

There is a very small chance that could be a problem (depending on a lot of factors, but in general it is not a problem to do that).
Yes when you can, always run the mkimage natively on ARM box such as the other T5325. It is the best way so you don't even need to worry.
However, note that when you installed and boot with my new u-boot, step 4 must be skipped during rootfs creation.

It is indeed strange that it would be stuck here. The SPI flash was not even coming in to play in the kernel at this point yet.
Can you redo the USB rootfs on the good T5325 box?

As you've guessed it, there are some bad RAM in your box. AFAICT, the kernel error looks like a rare kernel bug that surfaced when trying to handle that bad RAM page.
Try this to get more info and see if it was really a bug.

It did not give us more info than before.
Lets do this bisect to find the bad memory region.
In the the bootargs env (bold line), it is set to 256M. So the idea is if this boots OK then change it to 384M in the next boot, if it causes a hang then reduce it to 128M, ... so on.
Go forward and backward in a binary search (128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1) until you can boot with the max amount of memory that you can.

That's very good! with 256M you did not get the bad page error. It was a different error caused by stock u-boot limitation.
So try this revised envs set
If it boots into Debian OK, try 384M next,... and so on.
