Debian install after OpenWRT install

Debian install after OpenWRT install
August 10, 2010 05:03AM
Hello,

When I got my DS, I followed the instructions from Eric Cooper to install OpenWRT, using the pre-built images.

Now I would like to install Debian on a USB key, and if possible have dual boot depending on the presence or not of the USB key.

As I don't have anymore the PogoPlug firmware, I'm a little bit lost on what has to be changed in the install script to make it work.

Effectively, the script fails when trying to install the bootloader. From here I would not like to try things without pieces of advice, as my goal is not to brick my DS :

Installing Bootloader
/tmp/install_uboot_mtd3.sh: line 46: function: not found
cat: can't open '': No such file or directory
md5sum: unrecognized option `--noprompt'
BusyBox v1.16.2 (2010-07-24 21:32:22 EDT) multi-call binary.

Usage: md5sum [OPTIONS] [FILE]...
   or: md5sum [OPTIONS] -c [FILE]

Print or check MD5 checksums

Options:
-c Check sums against given list
-s Don't output anything, status code shows success
-w Warn about improperly formatted checksum lines

./dockstar.debian-squeeze.sh: line 252: /usr/sbin/debootstrap: not found

Thanks for your help !

That specific error is caused because your OpenWRT environment doesn't have the 'ar' command. It looks like your shell is a bit limited, as well. I would guess that there are enough differences that the script won't work without quite a bit of work.

There's another reason it won't work: OpenWRT uses mtd3 as a jffs2 overlay filesystem and my bootloader script will write a new uBoot to mtd3.

I think the only way you'll get this to work is with a lot of manual work to run the scripts by hand. First, you'll need to install uBoot on mtd0 (see the uboot page for that, BE CAREFUL) and then you'll need to install Debian using debootstrap.

Good luck!

I had the same problme with openwrt, but while trying installing debian I also cashed openwrt ^^

But with the serial console I could reinstall the original Poguplug-Firmware and then "upgrade" with this great skript.
Maybe you also can do this from openwrt.

I found the steps on http://plugapps.com/index.php5?title=Hardware:_Seagate_DockStar_Reflashing

Thanks Marc,

I'm waiting for a cable to be able to connect to the DS via the serial port.
I don't intend to do anything before I get it.

I was thinking also to reinstall the original firmware to be able to install then Debian.

Hi

I also moved from OpenWRT to debian.
When you get your serial working (I use a CA42 with putty), follow these instructions. youwill need to replace the commands using 'blparam' with equivalent 'setenv' commands. These are entered in u-boot. Be sure to do a 'saveenv' after ou type it all in, ask me how I know :-)

There is another post on this site referring to LEDS, I added some info there as well to get the patch for LEDs.

Thanks a lot !

I should receive my serial cable either this week or start of next week.
I will go back to you if I have any question then !

Hi,

First of all I'm a TOTAL linux newbie, that said,

I'm planning on using my dockstar in a 1-wire system (OFWS and RRDTool), I followed this page
 http://1wire.zoff.cc/2010/08/26/1
to install OpenWRT and OWFS.
Now I would like to try and install debian instead. Is it safe to try and follow this guide
http://jeff.doozan.com/debian/
. to install debian on a USB stick and not ruin my present setup?
Did you have problem with the installation itself or did the problem occur when you tried to make a dual boot?
