help booting debian on Pogoplug mobile
October 08, 2017 08:15PM

Here is the boot log (printenv is also included before boot):

Any help would be appreciated. I followed the steps in Linux Kernel 4.12.8 Kirkwood package and Debian rootfs

Also, assuming if the issue above can be resolved and I can get the pogoplug boot from USB, I'd appreciate if you can point me towards the required changes so I can get it to boot from SDCard since the pogoplug mobile has one USB port and my goal is to setup it up as SAMBA server and connect a large USB backup drive to the single USB port.

Uboot installation actually looks pretty good.

But you somehow lost the uInitrd file in the rootfs /boot folder.

The kernel panic above was because no uInitrd loaded.

Thanks for the prompt response. I re-extracted Debian rootfs and see from the log that it is now loading uInitrd but a kernel panic still occurs. I highlighted below a section where it is unable to open root device "(null)".

I tried with another device (sdcard) from scratch and got to the same exact error.

ahmed,

The reason for the kernel panic is: your rootfs was created incorrectly. You need to skip step 4, since you already have U-Boot 2016.05-tld-1 installed.

Quote

4. Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with older u-boots (2012 or earlier). Skip this step if you have installed the latest U-Boot for Kirkwood (or are installing this u-boot at the same time).

Please replace kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb below with the correct DTB name for your box (see the folder /media/sdb1/boot/dts for the exact spelling of your Kirkwood box name).

Generate the uImage with DTB embedded inside:
cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a zImage-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mv uImage uImage.orig
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

So reverse this step. Mount the USB drive on another Linu box and (assuming it is mounted as /media/sdb1):

cd /media/sdb1/boot
mv uImage uImage.pogoplug_v4.fdt
cp -a uImage.orig uImage
sync

And take it to the Pogo V4 and boot with it.

Thanks bodhi. Reversing uImage solved the kernel panic and now my Pogoplug mobile boots to Debian as expected. Thank you for your help.
