(Resolved) Pogoplug E02 can't boot into Debian rootfs with new uBoot 2017.07
December 13, 2017 05:28PM
I recently updated my uBoot on my pogoplug E02 to the 2017 version. I saved my current env settings before flashing over uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.img, I followed the instructions and changed my ethaddr, machID and arcNumber to pogo E02. I used a new hard drive and extracted the Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 and followed the directions as stated. Plugged in the harddrive to my pogoplug, but it doesn't boot. I have a serial connection but do not understand what it's outputting on the screen. It does report that I have the new 2017 uBoot, but after that it doesn't boot.

Thanks in advance.

I think I know what bodhi would say. ;) Since you have the serial connection, copy and paste the entire output from the U-Boot banner until it says, "Booting the kernel..." (or whatever the message is). Also, on another boot attempt, press a key to interrupt the boot process and type printenv and post the entire output.

Re: Pogoplug E02 can't boot into Debian rootfs with new uBoot 2017.07
December 13, 2017 09:11PM
hachigo,

You did Step 4 while creating the rootfs:

Quote

4. Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with older u-boots (2012 or earlier). Skip this step if you have installed the latest U-Boot for Kirkwood (or are installing this u-boot at the same time).

Please replace kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb below with the correct DTB name for your box (see the folder /media/sdb1/boot/dts for the exact spelling of your Kirkwood box name).

Generate the uImage with DTB embedded inside:
cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a zImage-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mv uImage uImage.orig
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

If your Linux box does not have mkimage, then install it

apt-get install u-boot-tools

You are booting with the new u-boot, so Step 4 should have been skipped. Mount the USB drive on another Linux box and reverse it. Assuming it is mounted at /media/sdb1.

cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a uImage uImage.pogo_e02
cp -a uImage.orig uImage
sync

And now you can bring it back to the Pogo and boot with it.

Re: (Resolved) Pogoplug E02 can't boot into Debian rootfs with new uBoot 2017.07

Tried what you just suggested.

cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a uImage uImage.pogo_e02
cp -a uImage.orig uImage
sync

This is what I see now. I am not sure if it is normal. There is no login for a user/root. It just gives me a (initramfs). This is the serial connection output.

I will try to make another Debian rootfs without step 4. I think I did do this before with the same results as above. But I will try again.

==Update Resolved==
For anyone who switches between SATA and USB controllers a lot with 2.5in harddrives, this may help you.
I created the Debian rootfs using the SATA connection on my main computer and then connected it to a USB controller from a seagate enclosure and then connect to pogoplug. When I plug that harddrive I just created back into my main computer with the USB connection it doesn't work but when I use SATA it does.

Anyway, I remade the Debian rootfs with the harddrive connected to the USB seagate enclosure. And it is working now. I have no idea why using either connection would make a difference when just extracting the Debian rootfs.

Thanks for your help.

hachigo,

That's still not the ideal configurtion. You still have not finalized your set up.

The reason you have trouble booting with muliple drives SATA and USB: the rootfs must be labeled rootfs. Once you have only one partition with label rootfs, then it does not matter what being plugged in, or how many drives/partition there are, the system always boot correctly to that rootfs.

And remember, you need to have only one rootfs exists among all partitions on all drives (USB and.or SATA).

Bodhi,

I have finalized the setup with the steps outlined in your guides. New ssh-keygen and everything. Followed the instructions to a T.
All steps were followed exactly all the way to the end using your guides on the uBoot and Debian rootfs harddrive.

I have even reproduced the problem. The only difference that I saw that resulted in a working harddrive Debian rootfs was in the connection I used to make the harddrive, SATA vs USB enclosure.

Here are my steps to make the Debian rootfs. Plugged it in to my main comp running Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS. All steps done as Root user not as sudo. Then fdisk /dev/hdd and made new partion table (only 1 as stated in the guide). Did mke2fs -L rootfs -j /dev/hdd. Then I extracted your provided Debian rootfs file to the newly labeled and formatted harddrive.

I repeated the procedure a couple of times to make sure. Again only difference was using a SATA or USB enclosure when making the Debian rootfs with the steps just stated above. When a SATA connection is used in the process, I can see the harddrive just fine on my main computer, but the pogoplug cannot and doesn't boot. When I make the Debian rootfs harddrive with the USB enclosure, I can see it fine on my main computer and boots fine on the pogoplug. BUT when I take this harddrive out of its USB enclosure and attach it to the SATA connection my computer it doesn't read/mount the harddrive. Or vice versa, if I made the harddrive with SATA connection then put the harddrive in the USB enclosure my main computer will not read/mount it.

I hope that clears up what I was saying. I don't know why if it would make a difference if I used SATA or USB enclosure. In the past I was able to shuck a harddrive from Seagate enclosures and still read the harddrives fine with SATA connected.

hachigo,

I see. I'd think the USB enclosure is the problem. Some controller inside has some weird logic that mess with the partition table.

So if you can, post the enclosure make and model, it would help others to avoid it.

Hi Bodhi,

The USB controller is from a Seagate 1.5 tb USB harddrive. I don't know how to find the make and model of it. No brand on it, really just a small green pcb.

As a side note, I still sometimes get the "EHCI timed out on TD" when cold booting the pogoplug E02 after its been sitting for awhile disconnected from power source. Once it's on, I just power off and then power on and it doesn't show the message. Which is weird.
I also noticed that when connecting more than one USB harddrive (I use it as a NAS), it will sometimes not boot from the Debian rootfs harddrive even though I only have one harddrive with rootfs label. I'm not sure if the harddrives don't have enough time to spin up the harddrives or what. But this is also remedied by powering on and off again the pogoplug E02.

One last question. When I issue the command blkid I get this output (below). Should I be concerned?

root@debian:~# blkid
[ 5572.492710] __nand_correct_data: uncorrectable ECC error
[ 5572.498096] blk_update_request: I/O error, dev mtdblock0, sector 2040

Thanks for reporting this. You should not get "EHCI timed out on TD" error with the 2017.07-tld-1 u-boot.

That's likely a result of the EHCI error.

This is normal. mtdblock module need to be running when you want to access mtd block id.
