pogo e02 doesn't boot without serial connection
December 15, 2017 04:27PM
So, after installing arch to the pogoplug I couldn't get it to boot unless I had the serial connector installed. Figuring I did something wrong, I followed the instructions on this site to switch to debian, which apparently worked because I get debian in the serial console, but again if that's not connected I can't seem to get the device to boot.

I'm at a loss as to what to do, so any advice is greatly appreciated.

Start with the basics and interrupt u-boot and "printenv" and post it all here and then let it boot all the way and post that too.

I think you need to redo the u-boot install.
Re: pogo e02 doesn't boot without serial connection

ljm90,

No need to install u-boot yet.

In addition to the information above, there is an important file that you need to post the content here.

Log in to Debian (root/root), and

cd /boot
cat uEnv.txt

And also just for information, tell me where that file came from? did you create it? during Arch installation?

bodhi,

running that command gets me
root@debian:/boot# cat uEnv.txt
console=ttyS0,115200
uimage=/boot/uImage
initrd=/boot/uInitrd
fdt_file=/boot/dts/kirkwood-pogo_e02.dtb
fdt_addr=0x1c00000
uimage_addr=0x800000
initrd_addr=0x1100000
loadfdt=ext2load ${type} ${disk}:1 ${fdt_addr} ${fdt_file}
loaduimage=ext2load ${type} ${disk}:1 ${uimage_addr} ${uimage}
loaduinitrd=ext2load ${type} ${disk}:1 ${initrd_addr} ${initrd}
set_bootargs=setenv bootargs console=$console root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts
load_debian=setenv type usb; setenv disk 0; run set_bootargs; echo Running loadfdt ...;run loadfdt; echo Running loaduinitrd ...;run loaduinitrd; echo Running loaduimage ...; run loaduimage
bootm=run load_debian; echo Booting from ${type} ${disk}:1 ...; bootm ${uimage_addr} ${initrd_addr} ${fdt_addr}

I didn't create the file during Arch install, I actually got it from the instruction here on switching over to Debian.
Re: pogo e02 doesn't boot without serial connection

ljm90,

Everything was checked out OK! I can't see why it would not boot without serial console.

Try this:

1 Unplug serial console.

2. On another linux box

ping 192.168.1.37

3. Power up the Pog E02 and watch the ping responses for 1 to 5 minutes.

If you see it consistently output successful responses for 30 seconds, then you know it has booted.Terminate the ping command, and then

ping debian.local

If you see it consistently outputs successful responses, then log in with

ssh root@debian.local

If ping debian.local did not give successful response then

ssh root@192.168.1.37

And tell us what you observe from the tests above.

bodhi,

I get a whole lot of failed packets. Pinging the device doesn't do anything, it isn't appearing in my router, and I can't ssh into it, unsurprisingly.

The device itself doesn't show that it's powered on except that the ethernet port is lit up, and that the HDD I have setup is lit for a few minutes and then turns off. The main LED does nothing when I boot it up without the serial console.

Let me think about this and come back.

How were the serial console wires connected? TXD-TXD, RXD-RXD, GND-GND ?

bodhi,

I have the wires hooked up TXD on the plug to RXD on my cable. I read somewhere that it needed to be hooked up that way, and I also didn't get a connection through my serial console if I plugged it TXD to TXD.

Seems like your serial pins were probably damaged from the wrong connection before. Can you use a magnifier and look at the pinouts to see if it was shorted/blacken... anything that is not normal color?

Sorry about the delay, I was out of town over the holidays and wasn't able to get to the device. I looked at the pins and they definitely are blackened, and now it seems that I can't even get a connection over serial.

The port was fried for sure.

But you can still boot into Debian like before? and just not able to SSH in?

Unfortunately no, it doesn't boot into Debian. When i plug it in the hard drive I'm using doesn't flash, and the main LED never turns on.

Replug the serial wires, and power up. If you see the system LED flashing, then you still have hope that it can be fixed.

If the main LED is not flashing booting either with and without serial wires connected, then I think this box is bricked, and then only way to unbrick is JTAG:
