Boot into Debian without using a serial cable on NSA325v2

Dear all,

I‘m trying to install Debian on my NSA325v2 (V4.81(AALS.1)) to run OMV and worked myself through the rootfs installation instructions on https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096. As I understood it, the bootloader needs to be modified to boot Debian from USB before following the guide. Is this correct? Booting from USB does not work out of the box on my NAS. At least I had no success with the rootfs USB drive I created.

Now I‘m unsure how to modfiy boot parameters correctly without using a serial cable (I currently don‘t own one). Besides I don‘t want to flash a newer uboot as I want to be able to return to stock OS if something does not work as expected.

On https://micha.stoecker.me/p/DNVpwG47 I read that boot parameters can be configured using telnet. Now I have two questions: Is this still possible/recommended and which changes need to be done to be able to continue with rootfs installation?

Are the instructions in https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,46164,46329#msg-46329 suitable for modifying boot parameters via telnet?

Many thanks in advance!

These commands are for serial console only, and it is still incompleted. There is one more command needed. And the format of these commands will be different if executing in Linux shell (fw_setenv instead of setenv).

Without serial console, changing u-boot envs has some risk of rendering your box semi-bricked (if there is typo in commands ...). With that said, if you are willing to connect serial console to recover if and when things go wrong, then let me know. If you cannot or not willing to connect serial console for any reason, then do not try to change u-boot envs.

Hi bodhi,

Many thanks for the clarification. I think I will buy a serial cable before I continue and see how far I get.
