Manuel,

> How did you get that information?

I have an alias that include all the following commands that I can run to get a summary of system info at a glance.

dmesg | grep -i machine | cut -c40-120
Thecus N2350

uname -a
Linux version 5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1 (root@tldDebianVM) (gcc version 7.4.0 (Ubuntu/Linaro 7.4.0-1ubuntu1~18.04.1)) #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Aug 19 12:47:39 PDT 2019

cat /etc/debian_version
Debian 10.0

cat /proc/cmdline
console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 mtdparts=pxa3xx_nand-0:-(ubifs);spi1.0:0x00400000(uboot),0x00010000@0x00100000(uboot_env),0x00010000@0x00300000(uboot_scr) earlyprintk=serial

fw_printenv uboot_version # I usually set u-uboot_version env so I can tell from Debian which version I've installed)
uboot_version=U-Boot 2013.01 (Nov 12 2018 - 20:56:19) Marvell version: 2015_T1.0p18-tld-4

I always have persistent MAC address on this Thecus N2350 box since we added the alias eth0 to the DTS!

So it is still a mystery why we have the same box, same kernel but the MAC address behavior is different :)

Great! I briefly looked over it, i hope some people will use it.
I have no time to test it. Also my box is in "production" use now for quite some time. Running great!

A heads up. I will release u-boot 2023.01 for this box pretty soon.

I've never used this rescue USB so don't have it. Let's see if any body has come across this before.

If nobody responds here after a couple days, you can try sending email to Thecus support. In the past, they were quite helpful and responded to my request for GPL source very quickly. And probably you will need to give them your box serial number.

Thank you for response,

i did asked support and i got this response from them:
Quote
Dear Sir,

Thank you for your reply.

Thecus NAS with 2 years warranty, and also at least have 5 years design hardware life, but this N2350V1.0184930002 been over 5+ years, it is out of service already.

If able to access for data storage here strongly recommend backup data for new storage ASAP and retire this system,

If unable to access N2350 anymore, please try to boot N2350 up without HDD and check from Thecus Setup Wizard again, once it is without help, please the place where you purchase from for RMA service.

Here is file in wayback machine https://web.archive.org/web/20200815144739/https://www.thecus.com/Downloads/DOM/

N2350_3.02.02_rescue_fw.zip

but i can't download it.

You are my last hope....
Re: Debian Installation on Thecus N2350 (Marvell Armada 385)

vaha,

Thecus has a download center.

https://www.thecus.com/Download-Center

The N2350 is still on the list. But I can't find rescue fw on that page.

=====

If you cannot find this rescue_fw.img, you can install Debian on USB drive, and then copy your data from the HDDs to make backup of them.

The first thing you need to do is connect serial console, boot it up and we can see where the problem is. If you're lucky, the problem is easy to fix, that I can help, then you don't need rescue fw, or run Debian.

However, since this box is already EOL, you need to consider running Debian on it and forget about stock FW.

Changed the thread, I hope it's more suitable for debug and installation questions.

Thank you for the detailed explanation.
Could you please check, is everything correct? I added an image to that post.

J1 serial port (right to left, outside looking in).

1. Square: Vcc 3.3V
2. TXD
3. RXD
4. GND

Means after you open the case cover, you'll see the board is mounted perpendicular. Look at the right side of the board (outside looking in), J1 is at the lower left corner. The unpopulated header is 4 holes, horizontally ( in some other boards, the header is installed with 4 pins).

The right most hole has square marking (the other 3 do not). Start counting, right to left,

pin 1 = Square hole, which is 3.3V

So there is only one way of reading it. In order to count right to left, you must already have the correct orientation.

Your picture is wrong.

Now I see on the photo (and disassembled my box) and understand what does it mean "square" and "4". Waiting for my USB to UART connector (for delivery) and will try to find out why it's not booting up via USB.
Many thanks for your help!

how is it possible, that there is no partition table? I created one ext3 partition according the article https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,32146,32146#msg-32146 on my USB drive. And populated it with data.

In stock firmware fw_printenv command gives that:

Sooooo....I made it! Now I'm looking at the Debian's console, but the problem was in USB Drive! I changed USB 3 to USB 2 drive and did the same steps according to the manual. And now everything works!
So Bodhi, could you please add that info about USB 2 to your manual too ?

For now I'm getting such log. Is everything fine there?

You must have some misstep somewhere. If I had set the env to use USB 3.0 then it did work for me.

How did you create the partiton on the USB 3.0 drive, using GUI or parted or fdisk? What type of filesystem?

Attach the USB 3.0 rootfs to another Linux box and at command line, do

dmesg | tail # see the drive letter assigned by Linux
Assuming the drive was assigned /dev/sdb
mount | grep sdb
fdisk -l /dev/sdb

Also with this stock u-boot, always attach the USB rootfs to the port right next to the Ethernet port. I believe it is port 0.

Use this command to list the boot folder in u-boot:
ext2ls usb 0:1 /boot

Please post the log of the above here.

Is the Ethernet cable connected?

Ignore this error. That was the old style of booting in previous kernel for this box a long time ago.

See my suggestion above.

No. It's just a recommendation by the kernel, and it's not relevant to booting with USB or SDD/HDD.

======

Now that you are booting Debian. You can consider testing the new u-boot here:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,133945

The u-boot version for this Thecus N2350 is 2023.04. Recently I've finished the 2025.10 u-boot version, but have not got time to release it. It's not urgent to use the new u-boot, so you can wait until I release the 2025.10 version.

I used only this USB port.

Now I disconnected and assembled NAS so there is no UART console.
But I can assure you, that USB2 drive returned folder list after the "ext2ls usb 0" command. At the same time USB3 drive
returned one of these 2 errors:

** Bad device size - usb 0 **

** No partition table - usb 0 **

I'd like to setup some services and to take a look how it goes. And then, when everything will be ok, to update OS and upgrade HDDs.
Many thanks for your help and your time.

So what are my next steps?
1) Find out why USB3 doesn't work?
2) Run from USB3
3) Update Kernel
4) Update U-boot?

We usually do the "O" command to wipe the disk partition(s) first. And this wipe resets the partition table.

fdisk /dev/sdd
o

You will need serial console to figure out this problem. Try using a different USB 3.0 thumb drive, preferably Sandisk brand.

> 2) Run from USB3
> 3) Update Kernel

I would run with USB 2.0 rootfs for now, if trying a different brand of USB 3.0 does not work. Ideally, you would create a swap file on one of the HDD parition. See the Wiki thread

Memory & Swap Settings

Tuning for low RAM boxes - System and HDD performance. Also read several posts after for setups for logging to RAM.
logrotate examples
How to create and use a Swap file

The rootfs does not need speed, it would be slow only when you upgrade kernel and Debian. As long as the swap file is on HDD, it would run fine in all scenarios (except with OMV).

> 4) Update U-boot?

I'm not sure when I can release the new u-boot and write the installation steps. Perhaps a couple months from now.

In the mean time, you can also run kwboot to load the new u-boot image over UART. This is the unbrick procedure when things went badly with u-boot. But it is good to boot Debian on USB 3.0 drive if you have permanent serial console.

Already done.
Also updated to the last kernel.

1) What do you think about zram? Should I configure it for N2350 ?
2) Is it possible to enable LAN LEDs ? LAN LEDs don't work on the front panel and on LAN port also. I configured other leds, but can't find out how to enable LAN LED.
3) Is it possible to use speaker? I'd like to to use it for power off and reboot notifications.
4) I searched through "how to save my USB" topic. What also should I do to extend my USB drive life?

- Use good (SanDisk) drive.
- Leave 50% space unformatted (over-provisioning, but from what I know, it works with f2fs or with ssd)
- use F2FS for / and Ext2 for /boot (could you please provide step by step manual, how to configure that?)
- move /var/log folder to hdd (how cat I make it?)

Could youp lease explain 2 last points?

5) I'd like to write logs to my HDD. How can I move /var/log folder there and enable logging?

6) I wanted to install Cockpit web interface. But it want to delete some applications. Is it critical for my Debian?

It 's really depending on what you'll use the box for.

I've not paid any attention to LAN LEDs (not important, but nice to have). I'll take a look for the next kernel. This is something common for various Marvell Ethernet drivers.

The buzzer does not work when I tried long ago. That'll go into the wish list.

That's too much. I use 10-20%. If you fill up that overprovisioning then your USB drive is dying, and need to be replaced.

Search for
mount -o bind
and turn off logging to RAM by reconfiguring to remove the option in conf file for busybox-syslogd.

That because cockpit is only support with systemd. So if you want to run cockpit, it will remove the sysvinit scripts and a packages.

Small Docker containers, network shares, services (Syncthing, nginx, iperf3).

I installed systemd earlier. And the question is does this installation process (with sysv init remove step) is safe for my system? I'm not so qualified, so could you help me with that question?

I'm not using systemd for any of these small embedded devices, and therefore not using cockpit. So I'm not the best person to answer this question.

Hi all,
can anyone tell me, what is the maximum disk size for Thecus N2350? Can I install 12Tb drives?
And one more thing. Does anyone use Docker on N2350? Is yes, can you please test, is it possible to run Docker containers with CPU limitations? I'm asking because I can limit only memory for specified container.

Thanks in advance.
