1 Use newer kernels to get better performance. Old 5.2.9 , iperf is only 600-700, while newer kernels can reach 940mbit/s
2 5400 rpm drive is actually a bit slow...

@daviddyer, thanks for sharing. I was looking mostly at writes which may just be slow no matter what?
If I had just looked at reads I might have thought SATA was really fast.

125MB/s vs 35MB/s - quite a difference!

11.4MB/s vs 10.8MB/s - not so impressive. The drive is certainly capable of more than 11MB/s.
I should note that this drive is formatted with NTFS, but I tried an ext4 drive before it went belly up and got pretty much the same results.
The problem I was hoping using the M300 with its SATA interface would solve is that one of the myriad of services my Dockstar performs is being my media server. If I'm copying a large file to it at the same time as someone is streaming something it can't keep up. I haven't tried that use case with the M300, but having my media drive go belly up during this testing hasn't put me in the mood to continue down this path. I really wish I had left well enough alone.

For sanity, run the same command David used (so we compare apple-to-apple):
FWIW, I don't think this Seagate HDD is suited for what you have in mind. You were transfering large amount of data to it while somebody is streaming.
It is perfectly nice as an archive media for streaming. But I would not use it as a system disk. And also I would avoid archiving data during prime hour.

Yeah :) they compensate the slow SMR disk with a large cache. I did look at some new Seagate 2.5" portable HDDs before, since the price is so good. But when I looked at the specs, I balked. However, if we want to use it on small plugs like Pogo V4/ GoFlex Net/ GF Home/ M300 as a media server disk, it is quite decent for the cost.

bodhi, I posted the read results. My disk was faster than David's.
Before I blew it up, I used a 8TB drive formatted with ext4. It has an even bigger cache, but I always get "Asking for cache data failed" and "Assuming drive cache: write through" in dmesg, whatever that means. It's definitely CMR (if WD is to believed) and had practically the same read/write speeds connected to USB or SATA.
This drive I'm testing with is just one I had lying around; it won't be my media disk. I plan on getting a replacement 8TB drive and I'll run the tests again. I had assumed that the USB connection was the bottleneck, so I expected much better results with SATA.
I spent hours testing, looking into SMR vs CMR (there's no reliable/foolproof method to ascertain what a disk is using, but I don't believe it comes in to play on these small writes to a "new" disk and I'm fairly certain my disk is CMR), and I've come to some conclusions:
I am curious to see how much of an effect NTFS had on my tests, so I'll reformat it to ext4 and try some more tests.

Usually you can get 8-10 MB/s with USB, so your test is in the ballpark for USB.
David's test proved that the SATA port on this box is quite fast. And he used an old 2.5" HDD for laptop drive.
I'm little bit lazy to open up my M300 :) (I'm testing various 2021.07 u-boots for Kirkwood and the M300 is my test box). But I will do that when I have some time, to add another data point to this benchmark.

As I said, WD says all their drives over 6TB are CMR (https://www.extremetech.com/computing/309730-western-digital-comes-clean-shares-which-hard-drives-use-smr).
It goes to show you how hard it is to determine whether or not a drive is SMR or CMR. No amount of querying parameters with hdparm or smartctl showed any indication of SMR.
SMR/CMR really doesn't come into play until you've done on the order of 500GB worth of writes to a drive. Believe me, I researched this to death. (https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/286432/how-to-determine-whether-hard-drive-uses-smr - I ran the test for an hour and got constant data rates, but never approached writing 500GB since it's so slow). Keep in mind that this is a new or fresh drive in that it's been lying around for years with little to no use.
Let me format my drive with ext4 and run some more tests. Given the amount of CPU cycles dedicated to mount.ntfs during file transfers that may be part of the problem.
I'd rather see meaningful file read/writes over reading from /dev/sda. I get 125MB/s reading from /dev/sda. So what? SATA vs USB gives me little to no advantage. I'm really hoping that's because of NTFS. We'll see...

Now that is something could be problematic. That brings a question, was the drive sleeping when you started testing? I would run the test at least twice consecutively to make sure it was fully spun up before test is run.

I would never test with NTFS. But If I did then make sure the "big_writes" option is in effect. This is in my mount script for all SATA drives.

Ok, so I'm finally sober enough to revisit this. :-) The TL;DR version is don't use NTFS to do disk tests. The SATA port is substantially faster than the USB port on the M300, which is what I had expected. Here's the data with the same Seagate 1TB drive formatted as ext4:
USB read:
USB write:
SATA read:
SATA write:
And for simultaneous read/write:
USB read (while writing):
SATA read (while writing):
For completeness I did the same tests on my Dockstar and got pretty much the same results as the M300 USB tests. I'm a little surprised I had problems streaming video while writing to the drive given that the read speed doesn't seem to be affected during the simultaneous write, but I no longer have the original 8TB disk to use for testing (damn it!).
I did one final test where I performed the read over and over during the write since the read finishes before the write and the USB write is really brought to its knees on the Dockstar, but not on the M300. The SATA write isn't affected and is sometimes faster than the read.
USB read:

So I was inspired by our forum members to figure out this u-boot (when there is a will, there will be a way :)
Attached is the new u-boot: uboot.2021.10-tld-1.m300.mtd0.kwb
Create the uEnv.txt on your rootfs /boot. Below is an example, adjust with your real MAC address, ipaddr, and serverip in this file.
# cat /boot/uEnv.txt
kwboot command:
With the uEnv.txt as above, it should boot automatically all the way into Debian. No change is need in your current M300 rootfs, except the new uEnv.txt.
Please test and report. Try both USB and SATA rootfs booting.
Warning: don't attempt to flash this u-boot. I need to iron out the mtd layout and where to store the envs. For now, just run kwboot to start the box.

With the uEnv.txt as above, it should boot automatically all the way into Debian. No change is need in your current M300 rootfs, except the new uEnv.txt.
Please test and report. Try both USB and SATA rootfs booting.
Warning: don't attempt to flash this u-boot. I need to iron out the mtd layout and where to store the envs. For now, just run kwboot to start the box.

USB booting went well, but not SATA. I had two of the 16GB SSDs lying around, but I honestly don't know where I left off with them. I can get one to boot with the old u-boot if I have something in the USB port. With the new u-boot I get a kernel panic with or without something in the USB port.
By the way, I had to add the -p flag for kwboot.

The kernel panic was an indirect effect of the uEnv.txt is missing. It is not on the SATA rootfs /boot? the uEnv.txt should be on the rootfs that you are booting.

It's late again, but this time I put uEnv.txt on the SATA SSD. It looks like SATA booting is still unreliable unless there's something in the USB port. On the other hand, USB booting seems to be more reliable. I have a flash drive that sometimes will boot with the old u-boot and sometimes won't, but I think it has never failed with the new u-boot.
I tried to capture some logs, but it's almost like it doesn't do the same thing twice. Sometimes I get dumped into initramfs with a complaint about it not being able to run fsck. On the next attempt it runs fsck without a problem.
Here's what I captured from an attempt with nothing in the USB port (it does make it to the login prompt, but it's not happy - it actually says, "Oops"):

Let let me see, I will reformat the internal SSD as rootfs and try it.
I never got kicked out of kwboot. That's very strange. Like when there are too much noise at the UART port.

OK. I've reformatted the internal SSD and put the latest rootfs on it. The internal SSD is the only drive in the box.
kwboot with the new u-boot, booted all the way into Debian, and did not see any error.

The new u-boot default envs (internal envs) are the new standard. The uEnv.txt is the additional envs on top of that.
Since the rootfs is still with appended DTB, I use it to clear the variable dtb_file. That is so you don't need to change the current rootfs.
And I set other envs just for convenient. The 2 bold ones below is the requirements to boot this M300 box.
That said, load_initrd_addr=0x2100000 and initrd_high=0x40000000 will be incorporated into the default envs. So when I build the next time, we then really have a standard set of envs inside u-boot (no need to use uEnv.txt).
When we flash u-boot image and envs image for real, I will prepare the default envs image using exactly the internal u-boot envs.

I had some spare time so I tried this kwboot on a Kace machine that otherwise boots normally from mSATA into Debian if a USB device is plugged in (I use a IR receiver dongle from an old windows media player). My version of Debian is a bit older than the one bodhi used a few posts back:

It doesn't look like uBoot tried to read uEnv.txt file (hence the warning about a random MAC address). Does the new uboot only want "rootfs" or is something else going on?

It did read the uEnv.txt. The random MAC is because you are booting with kwboot. But later it will be filled in my the uEnv.txt. uEnv.txt will not be read until the bootcmd starts after the countdown.
The rules of thumb is the default env always root=LABEL=rootfs.
So if your rootfs is labeled sata_rootfs. And your fstab is
Then the uEnv.txt should be adjusted:

These hickups are all because we are testing with kwboot. Afer you flashed it for real, the envs are already filled in properly.

Tried this three time with the same result. The M300 continued to boot correctly using stock uboot and a USB Device plugged in (the IR receiver). By accident I did a kwboot with the USB device plugged in and that also worked:

To me, the two boots are similar down to the line around 19.xxxxx

No it does not seem like file system problem.
I'm puzzle. I don't have any problem booting with the rootfs on the internal SSD, and no USB drive plugged in.
Something we are not seeing clearly.
Let me shutdown, reboot ny m300 again and post the serial log here.

Saw that this is still ongoing and bought an M300 off eBay in preparation for a proper and stable u-boot for it.
considering it's less than $30 new in box and much better than most of the other kirkwood boxes and can be described as the "best case scenario" configuration for such an SoC, I'm hoping this becomes the device everyone starts picking up. the seller seems to have about 100-something left in their inventory if eBay is to be believed, and I'm sure they'd be glad to be rid of them (and hopefully not know why!) :D
I'm still getting up to speed with the thread since there's a few years' worth of information to go through here. I did take the SSD out of my unit and shoved it in the pogo v4 for some quick tests without touching the filesystem. the silicon motion controller being used on the SSD gets VERY hot within a few minutes... and I can only get about 60MB/s cached reads with hdparm. I wouldn't be surprised if this was treating the drive as a big CF card in IDE mode on the bus, considering there's no DRAM cache. in the long term, not necessarily the best SSD to use for this when everything is finalized, and definitely not the best to keep inside, even for a rescue boot, because of the added heat generation compared to modern SSD offerings even a few years newer. why Dell decided to go with Transcend over Apacer for the internal SSD in this is beyond me... (but it likely has to do with the component shortages at the time, since these were made sometime during the malaysia floods if memory serves.)
likewise one can just go get a new or used Samsung 8xx SATA SSD and de-case it, since it should only take up half the space then and fit nicely in the original space taken up by the old SSD if need be. I've done so already inside a Wyse ZX0Q thin client that currently runs my website and minecraft server, to replace the original 16GB SSD in that.
final remarks, saw someone was asking if the PCIe bus was available to be tapped off of in a much earlier post, and while that definitely is out of the question, it might be possible to get SDIO broken out off test pads and the like. That would be great considering the amount of space inside the case for mountable modifications, but would take someone with an Xray machine and/or or knowledge of what and where to look to come to fruition. I can only hope someone more adept at tinkering with the board-level side of things comes along after the u-boot is finalized and word gets out.
