Cool! I've been wanting to dig mine out for a while now, but other priorities keep getting in the way. I've been pushing my beloved Dockstar too hard and I'm tired of the OOM killer kicking in, so it would be nice to have 2GB of RAM. :-)

The bad news is similar HighMem errors still exist in the latest kernel (5.2.8). It happens less often than in previous kernel version, though. Similar problem has been reported to mainline last year, but looks like the devs don't like to spend much time on ARMV5 (armel) anymore.

The Kirkwood kernel we have will run this M300 box with 768K RAM. So if anybody is having OOM running Dockstar or other Kirkwood plugs, perhaps you should start using this box with 768K for now.

I think I will need to build a different kernel for this box. Not giving up yet :)

Hi guys,

Frequent lurker, but infrequent poster here. After I stumbled on this thread, I picked one of these up for $10 after $5 ebay coupon. Got Debian booted from a thumb drive using bodhi's instructions. This looks like a nice souped up version of a pogoplug. If the 2 GB issue can get resolved, it would open up some interesting possibilities. For instance I've found Nextcloud is not really usable on a pogo (I've tried) but with 2 GB ram and faster CPU it may be possible.

I installed on an old PNY 8 GB thumb drive, which seems a bit flakey as sometimes uboot locks up after running "usb start". I just got a couple of SanDisk 32 GB Ultra Fit which I will use instead.

Barring any fix for the RAM issue, what about keeping stock OS (or at least the kernel) and ripping out the Dell proprietary stuff? I know it's old, but it does see the full 2 GB. I guess there could be issues installing new packages etc.

Not likely a good idea as the stock OS is Linux 2.6.31 which is absolutely ancient and likely contains many known exploits.

Agree.

As I said, I'm still finding ways to get around this problem. I know very likely it can be run at full 1GB with some different config. But I am still trying for 2GB!

Hopefully I will upload a new kernel for testing soon.

I'm trying to install the new kernel and ran into a problem. First, i"m trying to install the 5.2.9 kernel on the usb with the 4.12.2 kernel and filesystem that was first used on the M300 last year. Is that a mistake and I should Install the 5.2.9 filesystem and kernel, and then update to this latest kernel? The problem with my "hybrid" system is that there is no initramfs-5.2.9 file so the mkimage fails when trying to make uInitrd.

Not a mistake, you can install kernel 5.2.9 when running any previous version.

I am sure what "hybrid" system means?

initrd.img-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 is generated when you run dpkg to install linux-image-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1_1.0_armel.deb.

Thanks, I may not have run the dpkg, I'll go back and review. I've been having linux and windows box problems, so it's been messy. Hybrid is 4.12 filesystem with 5.2.9 kernel.

BTW, what do you guys use for this kind of work - Linux box using Terminal, Windows with Putty, or some way to use LInux with root privileges from a GUI? Lots of typing or copying and pasting without a GUI.

It is now working. I set up the USB on the M300 running the stock kernel and OS. I ran the dpkg command from the /tmp/usb/boot directory (/tmp/usb was the mount point of the USB) and it put the initramfs file in the boot directory of the M300 filesystem and the kernel modules in the /lib/modules directory of the M300 filesystem also. I'll look into dpkg to see if the install directory can be forced, or perhaps it in the setup of the .deb package? It seems like this would be a common use case where the kirkwood USB is setup on another linux box.

After moving the initramfs file and the kernel modules to the usb, running the mkimage for uInitrd, it booted into the new kernel. Is there any reason for me to run the stress tests? Is there a simple to install app that would test the memory size?

You have done it the wrong way.

dpkg needs to be run on a live system booting a previous kernel. And it will automatically populate the rootfs /boot and /lib/modules/, and also records the linux-Image-xxxx the rootfs.

Even though it booted, the roofts is not correct.

Foolishly did an apt-get update and apt-get update and got the initiramfs issue that you address in the update thread:

- What you need to do is create a new USB rootfs using Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2.
- And boot into the box first.

After you're satisfy that it is working. Then download the kernel package linux-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-2.bodhi.tar.bz2

And then run the kernel installation similar to what described in the released instruction for kernel linux-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1

All good now, running 5.2.9 -tld-2 kernel and 5.2.9 filesystem. Took less time than my screwing around yesterday trying to save time. Story of my Linux experience.

I'm also ready to get rid of the serial connection if we can. I have root access to the stock OS.

I used serial console. I also mounted the SATA and chroot to reset the root password. I never looked at the web page.

I'm busy with other activities currently, so here are some questions pehaps some of us can investigate.

It would be nice to see what the web page provides. Such as whether SSH can be enabled from there.

Also, is the telnet port opened? if it is, what is the default credential to log in as root?

Post last year on ssh from the web interface:

Do we need to scan more ports than the just the normal telnet port 23?

If you are inside stock OS, it is easier to see which daemon is running, and what ports are opened.

If no SSH or telnet, we'll just have to live with serial console installation for now.

I'll look at stock u-boot while it is running to see what else we can do.
