DisplayLink Monitor?
September 09, 2010 07:02PM
Has anyone had success installing and using a DisplayLink device ( http://libdlo.freedesktop.org/wiki/ ) with their dockstar or pogoplug? I'd be interested in hearing your success story (or failure). Also, anybody have cheap source for purchasing? Best I've been able to find is this one on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-UGA-125-Multiple-Monitors-1280x1024/dp/B003IE49T8

If you get the newest kernel with the Dockstar patch added in it will have a DisplayLink kernel module with it. I saw that as I was going through and turning off the modules/features I didn't need.

I don't see why it wouldn't work though as long as you have X11 installed on your Dockstar along with the other needed drivers/

EDIT: EVGA has the UV16+ for sale for $25 in the B-Stock store right now. (http://www.evga.com/products/prodlist.asp?switch=20)

EDIT2: Free ground shipping on B-Stock items - $25 total!

Way cool! I've placed my order. When it arrives, I'll report on my success or failure.

Looks like the UV Plus+ UV12 is even less at $15. i haven't looked into the differences but I bet the UV12 would sufficient for any dockstar purposes.
UV16 UV12
Anyone familiar with the resources required by displaylink? If it doesn't play quite well enough with the dockstar you can always use it for your pc.

Difference is max resolution - UV12 is 1440x900 and UV16 is 1600x1200.

I ordered a UV16 myself - going to try and get it working on a 1680x1050 widescreen monitor.

Just ran across this
Sheevaplug with DisplayLink monitor,
found via this thread. Driver wiki

Quite interested in how your UV16 goes.
I would like a small vga screen around 5 or 7" myself but can't find much at all. Well not much that doesn't cost more then a 17" at least. I really don't want a displaylink LCD, a separate adapter is much better IMO.

Sounds like maybe the problem described here: http://libdlo.freedesktop.org/wiki/TextConsole

The price has gone back up on the 16. The other is still $15 with it looks like free shipping.

Is it just me or would this just about fit on the dockstars top port. The cable would likely break it off but with right hack you could get this into one very small box.

If anyone finds a cheap 7-10 inch display, please do post it. I'm thinking car pc. :)

Any further development with getting Displaylink to work on the DS? Thanks.

My UV16s arrived, but they did not come with DVI to VGA adapters. So I've order two models of adapters from dealextreme.com:

I bought the UV12 and managed to get the "green" screen when plugged in, so I guess the kernel provided with Jeff's install works. Not sure of next steps though. I have read thru the stuffs at http://libdlo.freedesktop.org/wiki/ but still confused. Maybe I need to read it again. I'm able to get X over ssh working but not able to get it working with a monitor/Displaylink connected to the DS. Any tips would be appreciated.

Thank you for this thread.

Should I prefer a DisplayLink certified adapter or do other models as the one, rather cheap, pointed by gorgone work as well ?
Re: DisplayLink Monitor?

the displaylink is realy cheap and works stable although the driver resists in staging
a little problem is the xorg binary build

What about the speed of a DockStar with a DisplayLink device; is is sufficient for browsing the web with a Browser like Chromium?
Re: DisplayLink Monitor?
October 02, 2010 07:35AM
it performs on normal speed no issues

Re: DisplayLink Monitor?

I'm using a Samsung LD220G with a DisplayLink Connection. Luckily I got a greenscreen right away as I plugged in my usb cable. I installed the packages for the xserver but it seems that debian is unable to find the command "xorgconfig" which should generate a default xorg.conf. After googling I found another command named "Xorg -configure" which should be equally to "xorgconfig". Here's what I got from the output:

I just bought a DsplayLink adapter with DVI to VGA-adapter, but the driver ignore my resolution settings in xorg.conf. The adapter just uses the highes resolution on my screen which makes everything very slow (1680x1050) even in XFCE. how to force DL to use a certain resolution?

My tries with fbset weren't successful at all.

I just installed debian on my dockstar and tried two different displaylink-usb-adapters (samsung u70 and kensington USB-DVI). When I connect one of them, everything seems to work, I get the "green screen" and I can start X. But I do have a strange problem with both of them: Using X after some time I get some "garbled" lines on the screen, which can only be cleard be restarting X. Any suggestions?

Just wanted to say: my "garbled" lines problem is solved! I simply installed the new kernel (2.6.35.7) by gorgone (http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,582) and everything works perfectly! Thanks to all who made this possible!
