i5Js,

Strange!

I guess you should

1. Try booting with tftp. Just load the uImage over from tftp and boot the same way.

2. Read the Ex2 Ultra thread to see if others found anything weird like this: https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,99079

Thanks,

I will try with tftp.

About the post, i read it too. And it seems, but I don’t know really, or how to test it, that the boxes that were in WD Cloud 5, have the same behavior.

Regards

Ok, I will update the uRamdisk.

I have also compiled a new Kernel 6 and uRamdisk, but I don't understand what means the lines after "Starting kernel..." but it stops there:

Hi,

I found why it was not working with the kernel 6, it was the kernel config. I have it up and running:

root@wdmycloud:~# uname -a
Linux wdmycloud 6.0.10+ #1 SMP Tue Nov 29 14:49:09 CET 2022 armv7l GNU/Linux

The sizes are perfect for the nand. @bodhi, any tip to flash it?

Then I should modify the envs to get the rootfs from the hard drive.

In what way?

This is a NAS box, so you would want to update your kernel often. I always try to discourage people from storing kernel files in NAND. You dont really gain much using this approach.

The exception is when you want to run the rootfs from RAID array.

Ok, so what is your advice ? uImage and uRam in a tftp server, rootfs in a usb and data in a Raid ?

I do not expect to update the keener frequently , I just want to install open media vault and perhaps a Pi-hole.

i5Js,

Let recap where you are, and why you have to boot a certain way (tftp, USB, SATA,...) and which kernel. And post serial boot log, too.

Hi,

Many thanks.

The idea is get a kernel an uImage thin enough to fit into a nand. As I said, my idea is not to test a lot, just to have a box with latest OMV. I have followed this repository to compile my own kernel, using the dts for ex2 ultra I found here: https://github.com/Heisath/wdmc2-kernel

The first issue I have had is I am unable to boot from USB. I don’t know why, but it is what it is. Then you suggested to boot from tftp and worked flawless. The boot log is in my post: https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,67249,133455#msg-133455

Checking it, I have found that the mtd partitions are not detected, perhaps I missed something in the Linux.conf from that repository.

With your rootfs, kernel and uImage, the mtd partitions are there, but I don’t know why the sda is not mounted to continue booting: https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,67249,133463#msg-133463 in addition they are to big to flash into the nand, but ok, I could use the usb instead the nand.

And that is all,

Let me know if you need anything else.

And really appreciate your support with this forum.

i5Js,

OK. tftp is just a temporary mode of booting. And you have problem with this u-boot regarding USB Ext2 driver. So the next logical thing to do is to boot from NAND.

But before I help you with that, I think we need to try a bit more to see if we can get it to boot entirely from USB. And get some info along the way to see where things are on this box.

In reference to the successful tftp boot:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,67249,133459#msg-133459

This time, try:

Recreate the USB rootfs with 2 partitions, the first partition is type Ext2, the second partition is type Ext3. On the 1st partition, put the kernel files on /boot

/boot/uImage
/boot/uInitrd
And extract the rootfs to the 2nd partition like you did.

Attach the USB drive, power up, interrupt serial console. And,

ver
printenv
usb start
sleep 5
ext2ls usb 0:1 /
ext2ls usb 0:2 /

Now, if the 1st ext2ls command is successful but not with the 2nd, then this u-boot driver does not understand Ext3 filesystem. If both are succesfful then we made some mistake in testing before. And you can load the kernel files from that Ext2 partition using ext2load and boot it the same way as tftp.

Please post the serial console log from the u-boot banner until the last output.

I have tested with another usb key, using gpt instead mbr, and it can't detect it (as expected per https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,132015,132472#msg-132472)

i5Js,

OK. So that proved the Ext2 driver is not working in this u-boot.

Your log was not good. It got cut off on the right side, especially the important part (printenv). Please post the printenv output again and make sure that it's legible on your browser.

Is there any way to save the output into a file? Printenv > output.text?

Re: Debian Stretch on Sata disk in WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra

i5Js,

We'll enable the mtd partitions in Linux so that they are accessible for flashing kernel files.

Again, in reference to the successful tftp boot:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,67249,133459#msg-133459

This time change the envs a bit:

setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=pxa3xx_nand-0:5m(u-boot),5m@5m(kernel),5m@10m(uRamdisk),185m@15m(image.cfs),15m@200m(rescue_fw),20m@215m(config),10m@235m(reserve1),10m@245m(reserve2)'
setenv bootargs 'console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sda2 ${mtdparts} earlyprintk=serial'

And boot.

Log into Debian,

cat /proc/mtd

And then post the entire serial console log here.

Re: Debian Stretch on Sata disk in WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra

Probably I have missed something in my linux.conf to compile the kernel..
Re: Debian Stretch on Sata disk in WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra

I have compiled the kernel one more time, following this script (https://github.com/piotrekzurek/WDMC-Ex2-Ultra)

It has some improvements, and it seems he plays with the nand creating more partitions, I guess for stock kernel and Debian. Anyway, apart of that, this time, it boots successfully, and it detects the mtd partitions. Logs below:
