In this case I'm using a CAT 5e connected to a Gigabit router.
Here is the same cable, connected to a Dockstar on the same router port:
debian-dockstar:~$ sudo ifconfig

Below the steps I've done to re-flash uboot and the uboot environment variables from Debian.

root@debian:~# cat /proc/mtd
dev:    size   erasesize  name
mtd0: 00080000 00010000 "u-boot"
mtd1: 00040000 00010000 "SSD firmware"
mtd2: 00010000 00010000 "u-boot env"
mtd3: 00010000 00010000 "permanent u-boot env"
mtd4: 00010000 00010000 "permanent u-boot env"

Flash unlock doesn't work. Maybe because this was already done during the first install?

root@debian:~# flash_unlock /dev/mtd0
flash_unlock: error!: could not unlock device: /dev/mtd0

              error 95 (Operation not supported)

Writing has worked but verifying the data fails.

root@debian:/koen# flashcp -v uboot.2017.07-tld-1.t5325.mtd0.kwb /dev/mtd0
Erasing blocks: 8/8 (100%)
Writing data: 512k/512k (100%)
Verifying data: 10k/512k (1%)File does not seem to match flash data. First mismatch at 0x00000000-0x00002800

Google the error leads to the following quite old post on the mtd mailing list:

http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/linux-mtd/2009-August/027035.html

So it looks like the write has worked and that the verification fails due to a timing issue. I'll ignore the warning and continue with the next step. flash_unlock fails again similar as for mtd0.

root@debian:/koen# flash_unlock /dev/mtd2
flash_unlock: error!: could not unlock device: /dev/mtd2

Writing the environment to mtd2 seems to work OK but the verification fails again.

root@debian:/koen# flashcp -v uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.64K.img  /dev/mtd2
Erasing blocks: 1/1 (100%) -v uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.64K.img  /dev/mtd2
Writing data: 64k/64k (100%)
Verifying data: 10k/64k (15%)File does not seem to match flash data. First mismatch at 0x00000000-0x00002800

Make sure /etc/fw_env.config is correct:

root@debian:/koen# cat /etc/fw_env.config
/dev/mtd2 0x00000 0x10000 0x10000

Listing the environment from Debian still doesn't work:

root@debian:/koen# fw_printenv

Hi Koen,

Yes the flash_unlock is flaky in the some recent version.

[   26.938043] mv643xx_eth_port mv643xx_eth_port.0 eth0: link up, 100 Mb/s, full duplex, flow control disabled

This told me that the link was up correctly, as far as the kernel is concerned. The problem could be the autonegotiation that it was rejected. If you could log into your router, you can check its log to see if anything strange happened there.

Other than that, I think you can also play with ethtool to try bring in the link up/down and turn on/off autonegotiation. The trick to unplug and replug the cable was to force that to refresh. ethtool is the proper tool to test this problem before we blame the hardware.

All,

Another thing to try.

Boot up, log into Debian with serial console and set the system date time approximate a few seconds or minutes earlier then the current time. Unplug ethernet cable and replug.

So I'll do some reading about auto negotiation and ethtool.

Right here! we just never noticed it. That's a problem. So date time is out of wack.

I've adjusted the date and time and plugged in the cable a few times but it doesn't make a difference. After rebooting the date and time are still correct but the connection still doesn't work unfortunately. Should the date be set in uboot instead?

Edit: Just checked uboot and the date there now matches that in Debian. So I guess Debian adjusts the hardware clock when the date and time are set.

Koen,

Did you see the link is down/up in dmesg with the cable unplugged/replugged? And try using static IP?

I've just tested on my box. The static IP will help.

I left it unplugged for a while to drain out the capacitors. When I cold boot it later, the RTC set the time to year 2025. And this took a very long time to get network connection even with static IP.

i think with dynamic IP, you would never get an assigned IP if the date is in the future.

Your box RTC battery is dead! just like mine. So if you set time and reboot, it is OK. But if you shutdown, the next boot RTC will set it to a bad time.

I'm also running Openwrt, maybe it's just coincidence. I tried a stock router with the same result.

Re: HP 5325 ethernet stopped working

Ok I've checked the date and time are correct in uboot and set the following ip address in uboot: 192.168.1.225. Next I boot into Debian and setup a static ip address as follows:

root@HP5325:~# cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo eth0
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet static
        address 192.168.1.225
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        gateway 192.168.1.1

where 192.168.1.1 is the ip address of my router. I've logged into my router and setup a static ip address for the hp5325 based on the mac address as saved in the uboot environment. Next I've rebooted the device and started Debian. Unfortunately I still don't have an ethernet connection.

dmesg shows the effect of unplugging the cable on the HP 5325

root@HP5325:~# [  333.527546] mv643xx_eth_port mv643xx_eth_port.0 eth0: link down
[  340.088454] mv643xx_eth_port mv643xx_eth_port.0 eth0: link up, 100 Mb/s, full duplex, flow control disabled
root@HP5325:~#

My openwrt router shows this in the log as well:

Tue Oct 30 20:05:17 2018 kern.info kernel: [131423.838985] lantiq,xrx200-net 1e108000.eth eth0: port 1 lost link
Tue Oct 30 20:05:23 2018 kern.info kernel: [131428.959006] lantiq,xrx200-net 1e108000.eth eth0: port 1 got link

But there is no working connection unfortunately. The odd thing is that the ethernet port shows a green light when no cable is connected. The moment I plug in the cable the green light stops which makes me think it may be hardware related. I guess the only way to know is to revert back to stock and see if the ethernet is broken or not.

Have you tried ethtool?

No I've not tried ethtool yet. I'm not familiar with it so I'm not sure what to change / test. So I need to search for some troubleshooting tutorial online first.

Good point! that's what I just did yesterday when realizing that my battery was dead :)

Re: HP 5325 ethernet stopped working

All,

I've successfully recreated some tests that failed to bring up the network consistently.

I came to the conclusion:

1. The RTC is causing problem with network connection.

2. If the box is power down, but the power cord is till plugged in, the RTC still running. UPDATE: this might not be true, need to test it again.

3. If the box power cord is unplugged, RTC will set the system datetime to a weird time during boot (way far out, to the furture or back to the past). When this happens, with static IP you will get connection after several minutes. With dynamic IP, you will never get connection. And don't use MAC allocated IP for static IP to alleviate this problem, because it will got assigned like dynmamic IP.

4. Once you've connected to the network with a sane system time, and keep the power plugged in, you will never have problem with network, even if you reboot many times (that's how my setup has been working).

5. fake-hwclock sometime does not help if there is nothing to trigger the link to make a request to the router again with sane system time. The 1st network request was when the link come up initially, and that was before fake-hwclock starts during boot.

The RTC battery is replaceable on the T5325, so that might be the best long term solution.

Gave static IP a try without success, while the IP is set it just doesn't seem to be getting a connection to the router.

Re: HP 5325 ethernet stopped working

I've replaced the battery with a spare one of an old laptop motherboard. I've set the time, used a fixed ip and played around with different ethtool options but nothing seems to make a difference, I still can't get a connection. So the only thing left to test would be to go back to stock to see if it is a hardware problem.

Sounds like the best thing to do right now to go to stock if you've already tried:

Pinging the router for several minutes, and also clear the IP entry in the router (i.e. don't use MAC allocation for this box).

Note:
if I shutdown this box and unplug power cord, the next time I boot up, it took several minutes to get a connection (it might just be that my network configuration has played a role in that delay, this box jump sevral hops until the request get to my router). The Dockstar is plugged into the same switch, but the connection is always immediately.

Hold on. I think I saw something strange in this box log comparing to others.

@Koen,
Don't flash to stock yet!

All,

Let's make sure you disbale IPV6 in your box.

grep ipv6 /etc/sysctl.d/local.conf

Expected settings
net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.lo.disable_ipv6 = 1

After disable it, either reboot the box or do:

sysctl --system

Disabling IPv6 didn't seem to have any effect:
root@debian:~# cat /etc/sysctl.d/local.conf
net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.lo.disable_ipv6 = 1

Did both sysctl --system and rebooted box

That one is OK. Since we have disabled IPV6.

Try ifdown/ifup again.

Didn't seem to help, I even disabled IPv6 on my router's lan side.
