Note, if I leave the USB flash plugged in it would boot from the USB first not SATA. So that's good, I can use a USB rootfs as a rescue system and for backups of SATA-rootfs.

I've looked at some alternatives to make booting external drives permanently. I realized that those approaches, while possible, would be too cumbersome (not elegant enough :-). So I think it is best that I'd just rebuild stock u-boot to remove the offending code that set bootcmd to hardcoded string. I will get back to this u-boot in a about a week or so.
