garagoyun,

Look like my procedure was incorrect. Let's try again.

Power up, interrupt serial console and

setenv bootargs_root 'root=/dev/ram0 rootfstype=cramfs init=/etc/rc.preroot initrd=0x800000,0x1000000; echo Booting Stock ...; '
saveenv
reset

After the u-boot restarted, interrupt serial console at count down, and

printenv

Please post the envs listing here. But don't boot, keep it sit at the u-boot prompt.

Awesome :) so it works.

setenv bootargs_root 'root=/dev/ram0 rootfstype=cramfs init=/etc/rc.preroot initrd=0x800000,0x1000000; echo Booting Debian...; if run bootcmd_exec; then; fi; echo Booting Stock ...; '
saveenv
reset

Interrupt serial console and

printenv bootargs_root

Again, we want to see if it is correct before booting. So let it sit at prompt again.

That's certainly not expected :) I'll need to read that patch again, then. Perhaps bootargs_root is not the right place to insert the commands. It was taken literally, instead of being in the commands chain buffer.

To help the patch cross reference, power up, interrupt serial console, and get the current entire listing of envs.
printenv

garagoyun,

I've looked at some alternatives to make booting external drives permanently. I realized that those approaches, while possible, would be too cumbersome (not elegant enough :-). So I think it is best that I'd just rebuild stock u-boot to remove the offending code that set bootcmd to hardcoded string. I will get back to this u-boot in a about a week or so.

In the mean time, boot with serial console and try the HDD rootfs with these commands:

setenv bootcmd_sata 'ide reset; ext2load ide 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage; ext2load ide 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv bootcmd_exec 'run set_bootargs; run bootcmd_sata; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000'
boot

After executing command boot, it boots straight to stock. In the log are included printenv results as well:

I then rebooted and executed your commands for SATA again, however instead of 'boot' command at the end I entered 'run bootcmd_exec' and it does boot Debian from SATA. Note, if I leave the USB flash plugged in it would boot from the USB first not SATA. So that's good, I can use a USB rootfs as a rescue system and for backups of SATA-rootfs.

Very good! I mistyped that boot command.

By the way, when you have both SATA and USB rootfs attached, you will not be able to guarantee which rootfs will be mounted. They both have label rootfs. Most of the time, the SATA drive rootfs is chosen first. But the USB rootfs should be unplugged to make it 100% certain that only the rootfs that you want will be used.

Or use a different label for USB rootfs, and adjust the bootcmd_usb bootargs accordingly.

Of course :) I think we got everything working, except for one item: ability to access u-boot envs in Debian?

bodhi,

Yes, Debian is working well from the HDD. The only thing still needed: to be able to boot to Debian without the need of serial cable connected to my laptop. :)

Ok. Will get to this u-boot whenever I have time. ATM, not yet :) If Linux kernel 4.19 will be out this weekend, that will push this issue lower in priority.

FYI,

I am going to release kernel 4.19 and then get back to rebuilding this stock u-boot.

garagoyun,

Looks like something is missing in the GPL tarball. Is there build instruction in there? usually there is a README file for some instruction to build u-boot.

That's all I have received as zip file. If there is anything in particular I could request, but the support from the manufacturer is not very great.

Normally the GPL package include some instruction with it. At least a README file or build script. I could not find such info.

Knowing the u-boot version in the source tree, I could try playing with make tool while in that tree and hopefully can figure out how to build it. But this is never necessary for any GPL package that I've seen.

Looks like they just dump their build directory tree to a tarball :)

Bodhi,

I have built from source a few packages in my life :-), but never an u-boot or cross compiled. No experience, so wouldn't even know where to start from. Otherwise, I would have, at least tried, building it personally. If there is anything I could be of help, I would be glad.

garagoyun,

Oftenly, u-boot source this old need old tool chain to build it. So usually, the vendor include the whole shebang (tool chains, source, config files)... And we'd just modify the code and rebuild it. I would usually clone a new VM on my laptop, build, and trash it if things are too messed up.

Without the old tool chains, we would be very lucky if it builts. I've already tried a coupld times unsuccessfully. I would need to take time to revisit from time to time. I'm careful not to mess up my current build environment that has been great for the ongoing kernel and u-boot builds.

I have sent a request to the vendor. Fingers crossed.

bodhi,

I have received a reply from the vendor and there is no positive news. Basically, the reply was that I have been forwarded already everything.

Would you reckon it is almost impossible to rebuild the u-boot without that extra information? Do I need to start learning how to reverse engineer one now :-)

garagoyun,

I'll take a look some more. Their folder naming convention is a little weird.

I'll try Marvell toolchain for some of the old u-boot to see if it'd compile the source.

UPDATE:

I see. They expect us to build it manually without the build script.

garagoyun,

Stock u-boot make does a whole bunch of things right. But it did not build u-boot. I don't think this is possible without doing further patching in their source tree. Their released GPL just does not build properly.

Did you try kwboot with the NSA325 image uboot.2016.05-tld-1.nsa325.mtd0.kwb ? and how far you got?

UPDATE:

NVM, I recall your post on kwboot attempt with NSA325 u-boot:

Yes, I was just going to post it.

Would you like me to test any other uboot image?
