Paul,

You don't need mtdparts right away, so it is OK to skip until you booted back to u-boot, or to Debian after u-boot installation.

ethaddr will be set to a default local MAC, which you can also set in u-boot, or in Debian after mtdparts has been defined.

So ignore these 2 and go ahead.

Dear Bodhi

Thanks for the advice to proceed. I am being very careful ;-). I have completed the .dtb env command
fw_setenv dtb_file '/boot/dts/kirkwood-netgear_stora_ms2000.dtb'
But am now unsure whether to remove the dtb file env - I think my kernel is old (pre 3.16) but I am not sure . . .
Here is my current status

Why do you think your kernel is old?

Quote

You could do create a new Stretch USB rootfs with Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2. Save the Buster rootfs as a recovery rootfs. If there is problem in Stretch rootfs, you can just swap the USB rootfs out and boot into Buster, and and then plug in the Stretch rootf to fix it.

Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 has kernel 4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1 on it.

To see which kernel is running:

uname -a

Re: HowTo: Stora - Debian Stretch and OMV4

Paul,

Congrats!

root@debian:/boot/dts# uname -a
Linux debian 5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 #1 PREEMPT Sat Aug 17 15:00:56 PDT 2019 armv5tel GNU/Linux

U-Boot 2017.07-tld-1 (Sep 05 2017 - 00:38:05 -0700)
Netgear Stora MS2110

Now you are running the new u-boot, which will load the DTB separately.

## Flattened Device Tree blob at 01c00000
   Booting using the fdt blob at 0x1c00000

So your rootfs need to be adjusted. It was set up to boot with stock u-boot with DTB embedded inside uImage.

So mount the rootfs on another Linux box, assuming it is mounted at /media/sdb1.

Restore original uImage:
cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a uImage uImage.stora.with.dtb
cp -a uImage.orig uImage
sync

And bring it back to the Stora, power up and let it boot automatically.

Dear Bodhi - you are a magician! Thank you again for your help, which you make so painless.

My next challenge is to install the two HDDs, get the Stora visible on my home network and then plan for OMV. I can see that you were able to help Cergei with similar challenges so I will take time to study your advice and guidance to him. Candidly I was minded to try OMV 5 on Buster as I can see that the early teething troubles have been overcome - this wasn't an option when fcollingwood first launched this topic - unless you strongly advise against Debian 10/OMV 5 on the Stora.

One last question? In your previous response to me you said
Quote
bodhi
You don't need mtdparts right away, so it is OK to skip until you booted back to u-boot, or to Debian after u-boot installation.

ethaddr will be set to a default local MAC, which you can also set in u-boot, or in Debian after mtdparts has been defined.

Should I now set 'mtdparts' and 'ethaddr'?

Thank you again. Best regards, Paul

Re: HowTo: Stora - Debian Stretch and OMV4
June 30, 2020 04:38PM
Paul,

Yes, in Debian, set those 2 variables to make it complete.

However, right now they are default values, and it is perfectly OK to use them as they are.
ethaddr=52:3b:20:9c:11:51
mtdparts=mtdparts=orion_nand:1M(u-boot),4M(uImage),32M(rootfs),-(data)

That ethaddr is set to a local MAC address. And only relevant part in mtdparts is uboot (and it is already correct).

So set them to make it perfect, but if you don't want to, it is OK too.

Dear Bodhi - I hope you are well.

Further research fuelled concerns that my Stora might struggle with OMV5 on Buster, so I decided after all to follow fcollingwood's procedure to the letter meaning installing Stretch on the left hand HDD (WD Green 500gb) followed by OMV4. I did experience problems with mask services so I followed his "systemctl unmask" commands as suggested. I have arrived at the end of Step 4 (reboot to test OMV).

I am able to launch OMV4 via the web control panel, but it is very unresponsive, and fails to apply a very minor config change (time zone) eventually producing "communications failure - failed to reload daemon".

Through the serial console I often get cycling messages "FAILED Failed to start Login Service - see 'systemctl staus systemcl-logind.service' for details".

Please can you spot any problems with the Stretch installation? Thanks and regards, Paul

Paul,

I am able to launch OMV4 via the web control panel, but it is very unresponsive, and fails to apply a very minor config change (time zone) eventually producing "communications failure - failed to reload daemon".

Through the serial console I often get cycling messages "FAILED Failed to start Login Service - see 'systemctl staus systemcl-logind.service' for details".

The installation is fine. What you are seeing is either systemd or OMV problem (most likely systemd).

Hello all,

just one remark which might avoid troubles when initramfs is generated again and you have to perform the following 2 operations to generate again uImage and uInitrd

mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-xx.xx.xx-kirkwood-tld-1 -d vmlinuz-x.xx.x-kirkwood-tld-1 uImage
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T ramdisk -C gzip -a 0x00000000 -e 0x00000000 -n initramfs-xx.xx.xx-kirkwood-tld-1 -d initrd.img-x.xx.x-kirkwood-tld-1 uInitrd

If you do not embed dtb into the kernel image area, with the following uBoot settings initrd image size is limited to 11264KBytes since it is squeezed between kernel and dtb:

root@stora:~# fw_printenv
arcNumber=2743
[...]
load_uimage_addr=0x800000
load_initrd_addr=0x1100000
load_dtb_addr=0x1c00000
[...]

Now, if your initramfs will become bigger than 11534336Bytes it will be overwitten by uBoot when loading the dtb file resulting in CRC check error for uInitrd during the boot sequence.

Solution is to move forward load_dtb_addr, for example by allocating 15MB for initramfs:
load_dtb_addr=0x2000000

I hope this might help, I saw several posts about "BAD CRC" for initramfs with unexplicable reasons, this might be one of the causes when you are 100% sure your drive is not failing.

Regards

Nicola

nickg,

initrd usually not that big, unless there is OMV in the system. I will make a warning for that in the u-boot installation. Thanks!

Thanks a lot!

I revived my stora (I even bought a spare at that time) and had some fun in the process

Let's see how OMV behaves now

Kapde,

This instruction was added recently to the u-boot installation section (thanks nickg):

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,12381,12381#msg-12381

B. Load addresses for large systems

This u-boot was released in 2017, since then the kernel size has grown quite a bit. So if you intend to run apps or frameworks that take up a lot of space for initrd, you might need to adjust the load address of the DTB (load_dtb_addr). The default env is set up to allow 11MB uInitrd.

In particular, OMV4 running in the latest rootfs will result in the uInitrd larger than 11MB. So the load address of DTB must be moved farther out to accomodate the large uInitrd. This canbe done with 2 alternatives (B.1 or B.2).

B.1 Set the env permanently to give another 16MB to load uInitrd (i.e. allow for initrd that is up to 27 MB in size).

fw_setenv load_dtb_addr 0x2c00000

B.2 Adjust load_dtb_addr in uEnv.txt

Add this line to uEnv.txt (see section C below). This setting is transient, i.e. not permanent. If the uEnv.txt exists in /boot folder, then it will be used during boot.

load_dtb_addr=0x2c00000

Amazing to see this topic still alive considering the age of these Stora boxes.

I haven't touched mine since I set it up according to the first post in this topic, but thinking I should maybe update a few things. My Stora has been sitting quietly in my rack cabinet, acting as the Time Machine repo for my Hackintosh as I found it too slow and flaky for using as a real NAS.

Nice you are still around. So only timemachine backups huh. From where does the flakyness come, what are the errors? Will you be sharing the updates? Perhaps a full guide from the start would encourage me :) Mine still works with the stock firmware since it still works fine for Samba and time machine and I was too scared to flash u-boot (even when I bought the cable and the clamp)

Wow, you made my day !

However, I still get stuck.

I also own several Netgear Stora MS2110, and since the service was stopped (and my grumbling on their forum), everything is at a standstill, and impossible to reset, they are bricked.

I tried a bit to revive the old community and we are several at the same point:
So I found this tuto: https://sigri44.github.io/OpenStora/wiki/index_How_to_install_Debian_Linux_on_NETGEAR_Stora.html#Setup_TTL_serial_connection

But with all the trouble given, it is a Stretch version, and even by tinkering, the fact that it is an archive is a problem. I found kirkwood images via netboot, but the network cards are never detected.

I see you are proposing a new method, the "uboot" which I don't know, and the fact that my NAS are bricked, I only have access to Marvell/tftboot, and I load uImage/uInitrd images in order to install on a USB key.

If you could enlighten me on this method I'd be glad, and if I can offer a tuto/package installation to the community I'd be glad.

Sorry for the digging.

Peace !
