Pogoplug V4 - no SATA or USB
January 02, 2020 06:32PM
Hello gents,

First off, happy New Year 2020 to everyone and their families. May it bring joy and happiness.

I am puzzled by this issue: whenever a USB or a SATA drive is plugged in, nothing happens. There are no messages on the screen, the Pogo seems to be unaware of any devices plugged in.
I tried two known working USB sticks and two SATA drives, one spinner (ext4) and one SSD (this one has NTFS filesystem on it).
The SSD is not mine and is not intended to be used in the Pogo long term.

TBH, I never plugged in the drives before wiping the stock uboot/OS.
Uboot has been upgraded to Bodhi's latest and Debian 5.4.2 has been installed.

Perhaps the USB/SATA is bad on this computer?

Thanks and best regards.
Olek

Olek,

This rootfs is a basic rootfs. So I did not have automount capabity installed. It is up to individual users to install what they want to use.

But to check the drive being recognized by the system, you can look at dmesg output at the time it is plugged in. And then you can mount it manually.

Later, look in the Wiki thread for how to set up the automount (either install and run autofs, or add udev rules). Post questions if you are not clear about something.

Bodhi,

Thanks for a quick response.
Unfortunately, there is no activity (dmesg) when the USB pendrive is plugged in, not even a brief flash of light from its internal LED.
I verified that the drive is good by plugging it in laptop with Mint running - LED flashes and the OS reports the pendrive as an ext4 one labeled 'rootfs'.
My pogo boots up from an SD card, btw.
For clarity, SATA drive is absent at the moment.

Re: Pogoplug V4 - no SATA or USB

Olek,

There are 3 USB ports on this Pogo V4, the top one is USB 2.0, the rear 2 are USB 3.0. Try all 3 ports, see if any got a system response.

Note that currently, only the USB 2.0 port can be used for booting (u-boot limitation). But all 3 should work fine.

And also see what the USB tree look like:

Olek,

Since you have serial console, try to initialize the drives in uboot. Plug in the usb drive in top port. HDD drive in its slot.

BTW, what type of USB are you using (brand, 2 or 3, capacity), and HDD (brand, size, capacity)?

Power up, interrupt serial console, and

usb start
ide reset

If the output look good

usb part
ide part

Olek,

I think you should check the power supply (using a meter). Or if you have another power supply with compatible barrel jack, and voltage, and 2A, try using that.

Bodhi,

Thank you again.

This project is de-prioritized for now.
There is one puzzling area that I plan to take a closer look at:

netrunner,

Cool!

It happens often. Once during testing, I burnt a 5V router box plugging in a 12V power supply :)) Since that I labeled all my power supply cords at the barrel connector.

This is issue is what I consider an engineering failure! The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association has attempted to standardize barrel connectors to help prevent this (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EIAJ_connector), but it appears to have little actual support in the industry. If they followed the standard a 5V power adapter would use a 4mm plug (EIAJ-02) instead of the 5.5mm plug (EIAJ-04) which is correct for 12V.

The Verizon/Actiontec router did it correctly with the smaller size barrel jack for 5V. Seagate also used larger barrel jack for the GoFlex and Dockstar 12V boxes, never the smaller one.

IIRC, Cisco commercial routers have the worst design (in that I can accidentlly plug in the 12V large barrel jack and fried it!). So I considered it not worthwhile to keep those old routers going to landfill :))
