bootcmd_usb=usb reset; ext2load usb 0 0x200l00 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb 0 0x80ootcmd=setenv bootargs $(console) root=LABEL=root rootdelay=8; run bootcmd_usb; bootm 0x200000 0x800000

Your bootcmd was messed up. Should be:

bootcmd_usb=usb reset; ext2load usb 0 0x200000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb 0 0x800000  /boot/uInitrd
bootcmd=setenv bootargs $(console) root=LABEL=root rootdelay=8; run bootcmd_usb; bootm 0x200000 0x800000

Also, the load adresses should be change to 0x800000 and 0x2100000

bootcmd_usb=usb reset; ext2load usb 0 0x800000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb 0 0x2100000  /boot/uInitrd
bootcmd=setenv bootargs $(console) root=LABEL=root rootdelay=8; run bootcmd_usb; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000

One step closer i think, now its something with:

## Booting image at 00800000 ...
Bad Magic Number

But why reset? what i have copied from your post some days ago, it said "usb start"?

26Feb2020

Adjust the envs:

setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb start; ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv bootcmd 'setenv bootargs $(console) root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial; run bootcmd_usb; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000; reset'
setenv console 'console=ttyS0,115200 mtdparts=orion_nand:0x100000@0(uboot),0xff00000@0x100000(root)'

Martin,

Your rootfs is bad. Recreate the USB rootfs and make sure you follow the instruction closely.

"usb start" or "usb reset" is basically the same thing when you run it the 1st time.

I cant put in these bootcmd you posted yesterday, was it ment to just be bootcmd or with setenv before?

I've tried to make a new rootfs but it must be something i'm missing or doing wrong, i have again followed the steps without success.

Updated 25 Aug 2019:

Basic Debian buster Kirkwood rootfs for most Kirwood plugs:

- tarball size: 209M
- install size: 536M
- The init system used in this rootfs is sysvinit . To boot with systemd, see note 2 below.
- Installed packages: nano, avahi, ntp, busybox-syslogd (log to RAM), htop, isc-dhcp-client, dialog, bzip2, nfs server/client, iperf, ethtool, sysvinit-core, sysvinit, sysvinit-utils, u-boot-tools, and mtd-utils.
- see LED controls in /etc/rc.local, and /etc/init.d/halt
- see some useful aliases in /root/.profile
- root password: root

Download at Dropbox:

Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2

md5:
cd8ad170aa1a9fdc2a0a1c43ab1c0721
sha256:
8ccbbced367b4c2bf3728262e882f8232aff0fecd1c0c767219a0cab49a0b9bf

And remember to check the hash of what you download, as always.

Installation:

Installation can be done on any Linux box, with a fresh USB drive (SD card or HDD would work fine too).

Note: all steps below must be done while logging in as root user (not sudo). If you are not the root user then don't continue, because the rootfs will not work.

1. Format a new USB drive with a single Ext3 partition, and label it rootfs. If you are running the latest U-Boot for Kirkwood then you can use Ext4.

2. Mount the drive on a Linux box. cd to top level directory and extract it. It is assuming the USB drive is mounted at /media/sdb1
cd /media/sdb1
tar -xjf Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2

3. Adjust fstab (optional).

Edit /media/sdb1/etc/fstab entry for root device to match the rootfstype of your rootfstype if you use Ext4 or Ext2. However, you can keep it as is without problem in booting since the kernel will figure out which file system the rootfs was formatted.

LABEL=rootfs / ext3 noatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1

4. Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with older u-boots (2012 or earlier). Do not do this step if you have installed the latest U-Boot for Kirkwood (or are installing this u-boot at the same time).

Please replace kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb below with the correct DTB name for your box (see the folder /media/sdb1/boot/dts for the exact spelling of your Kirkwood box name).

Generate the uImage with DTB embedded inside:
cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a zImage-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mv uImage uImage.orig
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

If your Linux box does not have mkimage, then install it

apt-get install u-boot-tools

5. Done. Take this USB rootfs to your plug and cold start. After booted into Debian, see Note1 and Note2 below. It is very important that you do Note1 steps to secure your box.

And the lates test i used another usb disk but with the same resault.

Re: Help booting

Martin,

There were 2 typos here:

bootcmd=setenv=bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=root rootdelay=8

At serial console correct it:

setenv bootcmd 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=8'

And then

boot
And post the entire serial log here.

Re: Help booting Netgear Stora
March 01, 2020 05:29PM
Did a remake of rootfs again, erased all on disk and made it ext3 and primary, i think maybe the other ones was logical partition type.

then i used
setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb start; ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv bootcmd 'setenv bootargs $(console) root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial; run bootcmd_usb; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000; reset'

Marvell>> reset

I sniped my putty log but i don't know how to recreate log if it's possible? when i try typing the line and at the end it seams to copy all to the next row and then writing over that with the rest.

hope you understand my bad english :)

In the log you see at the left what i have copy/paste in,

In NOTE2 i have changed init=/bin/systemd to init=/etc/systemd because i search for systemd and found that folder under etc.

thanks again for the help

Martin,

No, it did not help.

You need to highlight the log inside your Putty terminal and then Right-click-->Copy (or Control-C to copy). Go back to the forum and paste (Control-V) it to the post.

From your log above (except the part where I could not read at the end of NOTE1 and NOTE2). Everything is OK.

Martin,

Your u-boot envs look OK. But the USB drive is bad again! You need to double check how you create the parttion, and tar the rootfs, and if you have sync it before unmount.

Which brand of the USB flash drive are you using? If you keep having problem similar to this, try switching to another USB flash. The best brand for a rootfs is Sandisk (based on my experience).

At first i used a Corsair Flash Voyager® GTR 32GB USB Flash Drive then
i tried to use a Corsair SSD Force Series F60, 60GB and that was the one i manage to boot with the second time(created as Ext3, primary partition). I have one Sandisk 8gb that i will try.

Is it ment to just run debian with this usb or can i mount a sata disk and put debian there?

Hi bodhi,

thanks for all the help,

I made a new rootfs on a Sandisk and it started, so now i can connect to it by ssh and reboot works fine.

Should i try to implement a new u boot or just leave it as it is? and why do i need a new u-boot?

Only if you need the features that new uboot provides:

Quote

These images support the following latest U-Boot features (among others):

- both FDT and non-FDT kernel booting
- supports EFI/GPT partition > 2TB (SATA and USB) either for booting or just attached.
- boot Ext4 rootfs
- SNTP (Simple NTP to set date time during U-Boot booting)
- bootz (boot with zImage).
- Ability to customize u-boot envs in a script (uEnv.txt) during boot, without committing changes to NAND (see section C for instruction). This feature also can be used for rescue purpose where the u-boot envs were messed up, or when the NAND envs block is bad.

Martin,

If you have serial console and can kwboot the new u-boot, then I'd say upgrade it now, instead of waiting untill you have to (i.e. want to use Ext4 or large HDD).

Re: Help booting Netgear Stora

Martin,

1. You have set up netconsole. So the output was routed to netconsole when u-boot start.

host 192.168.1.21 is alive

Now open another terminal, and run netconsole and you will see the countdown there.

Or you can change the IP address of the box that you run serial console to make netconsole inactive (and all outout will be routed to serial console).

2. Now you are running the new uboot so you also need to adjust your rootfs to boot with separated DTB.

Mount your Sandisk USB rootfs on another Linux box, and restore the original uImage. Assuming it is mounted at /media/sdb1

Reverse uImage to the original.

cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a uImage uImage.with_dtb
cp -a uImage.orig uImage
sync

After that, unmount the USB rootfs and bring it back to the Stora and boot again.

Re: Help booting Netgear Stora

I'm growing to dislike the python ecosystem/pip for exactly this type of issue.Some packages work like magic others will download 5gigs of libraries and spend 2 hours compiling only to throw an error because you're not running on a raspberrypi.

Fortunately, Debian provides packages for some of the common python libraries that are difficult to build on platforms like armel.

You should be able to save some trouble and use the Debian pycurl package
 apt-get install python-pycurl

Some other tips can be found here:

Cool!

Now, let 10... help you with this motioneye issue. He is much more knowledgeable than I am re this.

Lol, i’m just knowledgable enough of Python to know the libraries I’ve written are pretty ugly... though they do get the job done.

I just installed motioneye on a Buster armel system (TS-XL) without much trouble:

apt-get install python3-pip python3-pil python3-pycurl
pip3 install motioneye
Re: Help booting Netgear Stora
March 15, 2020 11:02PM
apt-get install python3-pip python3-pil python3-pycurl
pip3 install motioneye

That's way more than I know :)

@Martin,
In all cases, Debian repo should be used first. Unless you need something too new that is not avialable yet.

Thanks guys!

I installed Debian pycurl package and then I ran
Pip install motioneye
And that worked.

I tried the pip3 earlier and that didn’t work, but maybe I did it the wrong way.

many thanks again

Looking back, your original error might have been resolved by just installing GCC/etc:
apt-get install build-essential

I still prefer to use the Debian packaged versions in most cases. I usually try to avoid to avoid the extra space required for all the build dependencies and the hassle of building/compiling on these devices where possible.

Dear Martin

Bodhi has been helping me with my distressed Netgear Stora which has corrupted environemnts / Bad Magic Number. He advises that I need a friendly Stora owner to send me the recovery image /flashware.img. Do you have it please? Please could you share it with me?

Thanks, Paul
