AkkJaa...

I find out, i have 3 HDD in the debian box. so i disconnected 2 HDD then only system disk left. then now the USB drive is sdb1 so now it working to extract to the USB Drive.

AkkJaa,

Let me show the difference between Windows, a full Linux distro with GUI, and a headless box with a basic rootfs like one I provided here.

- When we say "wipe the disk" we mean using fdisk to erase all partitions (sub command o inside fdisk).
- The USB drives or HDD drives are initialized by Linux with a drive letter at the /dev directory. So it is upto Linux to give the USB or HDD drives a device /dev/sda, /dev/sdb,....
- If there are partition on disk they will take /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2,...

- Usually the partitions will be mounted by Debian/Fedora/... GNU OS automatically in a full distribution. But not in the basic rootfs I released (it is a learning vehicle).
- To wipe and reformat, you need to unmount the USB partition(s). fdisk only works on a drive that has no mounted partition

- Depending on which device drive letter that Linux assigned to a drive, you would use that with fdisk. You would find out with dmesg (kernel logging) like this:
dmesg | grep USB
(The last USB drive that was plugged in will show the activities at the end of dmesg)

So if the USB drive is /dev/sdc, then
fdisk /dev/sdc

After you wipe with fdisk (sub command o), and created 1 partition (sub command n), and commit it (sub command w). Then exit fdisk and format the USB partition

Assuming the drive letter is /dev/sdc, the fist partition is /dev/sdc1
mkfs.ext3 -L rootfs /dev/sdc1

At this point the drive is still unmounted, so you need to mount it before writing

mkdir /media/sdc1
mount /dev/sdc1 /media/sdc1

And then
cd /media/sdb1
tar -xjf Debian-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2
sync
umount /media/sdc1

========

The above is a really basic Linux chores, it is the same thing going on underneath Windows GUI, or Linux GUI. But here we use command line while being root because we deal with low-level stuff and need to be precise.

I understood transitioning from Windows to Linux GUI is easy, but the low level stuff is different, so often time you need to search for HOWTOs, or read the manual like:
man fdisk
man mkfs.ext3

so on :)

Bodhi,

Yes i discover or find out about fdisk here now. i used fdisk much in dos before. so right now i have use the fdisk to remove 3 partition's on the USB drive. and formated the USB drive again with new partition and now i extrackt the files into the USB drive again. to see if that help.
And also about the HD and USB letters and how they change when i disconnect them.

I will try and see now. i see the USB are ready now so i will try it in the motherboard again and see what happend now.

ok. thanks again.

AkkJaa,

- Plug in the USB rootfs with Debian-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2.
- Power up, interrupt serial console and

setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'
setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'
setenv load_uinitrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv usb_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; run load_uimage; if run load_uinitrd; then bootm 0x800000 0x2100000; else bootm 0x800000; fi'
setenv usb_bootcmd 'run usb_set_bootargs; run usb_boot'
setenv bootcmd 'usb start; run usb_bootcmd; usb stop; reset'
And then,

printenv
boot

Yes there is the dir sdb1 but it is empty only the Debian-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 is in the dir. /media/sdb1
And everything is in the USB Drive

But i now run on a laptop computer a lenovo B470 with 1 TB HD and 4 Gb ram. with intel Core i3. and i have deleted everything on the USB drive again with fdisk then format with
mkfs.ext3 -L rootfs /dev/sdb1
and have run the install again
cd /media/sdb1
tar -xjf Debian-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2
then
sync
and
cd /
umount /media/sdb1
Then when done move USB drive to RN10400 and start up and it is the same. So i don't know what is wrong.

Thanks again.

AkkJaa,

Again :) it is not mounted yet! you have to mount it first.

mkdir -p /media/sdb1
mount /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1

and then

ls -lart /media/sdb1/boot

Yes but this is when i make the USB drive as a pri partition in fdisk. maybe i must make it ext partition in fdisk. or that maybe come when i format with Ext3 later on.?

Ok what do you think.

Many thanks again.

AkkJaa..

Ps. i have some problem with this but i love it, i really start to like this debian linux things.

Bodhi,

Now i have delete it again with fdisk. Then make a new ext partision with fdisk. then format with.
mkfs.ext3 -L rootfs /dev/sdb1
Then make dir
mkdir /media/sdb1
mount /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1
And then
cd /media/stb1
tar -xjf Debian-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2
And
sync
and then
cd /
umount /media/sdb1
then i move USB drive to NR10400
picocom --b 115200 --f n --p n --d 8 /dev/ttyUSB0
Here is the read out

Bodhi,

Can there be some virus on the motherboard on the chip on it or something. i don't know. do you see something wrong with the read out from the motherboard.
I remember for some years ago someone talk about crypto virus or something who can atack Nas system they talk about. But eny way when we change all on the motherboard all the virus also will be gone. Yes so.

Well i don't know.

Many Thanks again.

AkkJaa..

By the way the connect on the serial header is J14 on the RN10400 or RN104 but was differnt from RN102. because RX was TX and TX was RX from the RN102 to the RN104. but that have nothing to say now because it read out good now.

No. Let me revise the instruction corresponding to your Linux host's behavior (below after the break).

Sometime in the future, you want to post the serial pinouts here (in ASCII text, or picture) so it can be benefited by newcomers.

======

Here is what you did wrong.

On your Linux host the mounting was done autotmatically, and it assigned the mount point using partition label (instead of sdb1)

mount
...
/dev/sdb1 on /media/root/rootfs type ext3 (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uhelper=udisks2)

So you want to cd to that directory and then untar the rootfs tarball. Remeber to sync a dew times (same as Windows Safely Remove)

cd /media/root/rootfs
tar -xjf Debian-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2
sync
sync

And then
umount /media/root/rootfs
Now you have the rootfs in the USB.

To see the typical behavor of a Linux system. Now remove the USB rootfs. Check the mountpoints. It is gone.
mount

And then plug it in again so this Linux host can automount the drive. Check the mount ponts

mount
Now you will see it is mounted at /media/root/rootfs again.

Yes you are right, i will take a picture of the RN104 motherboard from behind and and mark what is the right connecting on the serial header J14 on the motherboard RN104. model name RN10400.

Ok, i understand what i did wrong now so i will try again and post it out here.

Well, many thanks again.

AkkJaa,

Quote

ls -lart /media/sdb1/boot

There should be no files in /media/sdb1. To avoid confusing the issue, before plugging in the USB drive to format it, delele this folder and everything underneath:
(be extra careful when you do this, rm-rf at the wrong place would wipe out your Linux host file system)
rm /media/sdb1 -rf
Now you have no /media/sdb1 folder.

Plug in the USB drive. In your Linux host the USB drive is mounted at

/media/root/rootfs

So it was correct to untar the rootfs to it:

cd /media/root/rootfs
tar -xjf Debian-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2
sync
sync

Bodhi,
Quote

There should be no files in /media/sdb1. To avoid confusing the issue, before plugging in the USB drive to format it, delele this folder and everything underneath:
(be extra careful when you do this, rm-rf at the wrong place would wipe out your Linux host file system

Ok i will try this now.

Thanks.

Hi Bodhi,

Here i have make a new USB Drive. Now i use fdisk and delete the old partion and make a new pri partion then i format it with this
mkfs.ext3 -L rootfs /dev/sdb1
And
cd /media/root/rootfs
tar -xjf Debian-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2
sync
sync
But i can't see it sync. Well then i did this
umount /media/root/rootfs
So then i take it over to the RN104 motherboard and turn on and then this.
Terminal ready

AkkJaa,

The sync if successful will not output anything. Just a way to commit any pending writes to the all disk drives in the system, including the USB. This is a precaution only.

At this point cd to the rootfs boot folder and check the boot files
cd /media/root/rootfs/boot
ls -lart

You should see the zImage-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1 and uInitrd that came with rootfs. And then you need to continue with Step 3 as instructed in the rootfs creation (you just did Step 2).

3. Create uImage with DTB appended. I am using the Zyxel NAS326 as an example here. Please replace armada-380-zyxel-nas326.dtb below with the appropriate DTB name for your box.

cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a zImage-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/armada-380-zyxel-nas326.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage

Note the armada-380-zyxel-nas326.dtb above, it needs to be replaced with the DTB for this box.

armada-370-netgear-rn104.dtb

So adjust for your box at this time Step 3 should be:

cd /media/root/rootfs/boot
cp -a zImage-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/armada-370-netgear-rn104.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

Bodhi,

Now i work with part 3. but here is a command who is not here.

mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
bash: mkimage: command not found

And i try just the command but the same.
mkimage
bash: mkimage: command not found

And i can't find the file.: armada-370-netgear-rn104.dtb but i had the file.: armada370-netgear-rn102.dtb so i used that one.

Then the file.: zimage-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1 come with the first command.

cp -a zImage-5.2.9-mvebu-tld-1 zImage.fdt
And this
cat dts/armada-370-netgear-rn102.dtb >> zImage.fdt
This is in this dir
/media/root/rootfs/boot#
Yes then i think i have with most of it.

Thanks Again.

Best regards.
