Pogoplug E04 not booting from SD Card or USB
January 10, 2021 04:39PM
I followed this link to be able to boot my old Pogoplug EO4 from either an SD card or USB:
Qnology PogoPlug Booting from SD

All appears to be OK except it always keeps booting into the Popoplug. When I ssh into the device it is always the Pogoplug kernel.

I tried different SanDisk SD cards and USB sticks to no avail, it always only boots to the Pogoplug.

I used screen and booted a second time to capture the log file and the weird thing is alarm was loaded. I could login to the alarm kernel over serial (alarm, alarm), and at the same time I could ssh into the Pogoplug device as root and my root password.

I read through the posts here since the above link seems to be dead for sometime now and I saw a post from bodhi about the rootfs not being mounted properly.

I then logged into Linux mint as root and recreated my ArchLinux rootfs card. I plugged the SD card back into my Pogoplug and rebooted. It behaves differently and still wont boot into ArchLinux on the SD card.

If you look at the console log, it appears to all be working fine, but its not loading. Looking at the second console log after using the SD card from Linux mint, it appears as though it can't find the image, but it still loads. It also tries to load ArchLinux but hangs partway through.

At this point I'm wondering if the ArchLinux version is simply too new for the Pogoplug hardware and should I be trying to load an older version?
Here is my first serial console output:
U-Boot 2014.07-tld-1 (Jul 18 2014 - 00:59:45)

Re: Pogoplug E04 not booting from SD Card or USB

Rhodess,

> At this point I'm wondering if the ArchLinux
> version is simply too new for the Pogoplug
> hardware and should I be trying to load an older
> version?

Not the reason. Besides, the successful boot shows the kernel was built recently (6 months ago):
[ 0.000000] Linux version 4.4.227-1-ARCH (builduser@leming) (gcc version 9.3.0 (GCC) ) #1 PREEMPT Sat Jun 13 04:13:48 UTC 2020

The failed boot showed that the SD rootfs created in Mint simply was not prepared correctly:
** File not found /boot/uImage **

When you create the rootfs on SD card using Mint, pay attention to these:

- You must be root user.
- use command line fdisk, clear the partitions, and create a new Ext3 partition. Don't use the GUI to do this.
- mount it, and untar the Arch rootfs to it.
- Do several sync commands.
- Unmount the card.

In the event that you used a rootfs tarbal other than one with kernel "Linux version 4.4.227-1-ARCH", list the /boot folder after you create it and post here.

Assuming the card is mounted at /media/sdb1:
ls -latr /media/sdb1/boot

Re: Pogoplug E04 not booting from SD Card or USB
January 10, 2021 05:09PM
Thanks Bodhi, the only thing different I did was sync only once.

Here was my process:
Reboot linux Mint
CTRL+ALT+F4
Login as root to command prompt

#Partition SD Card
fdisk /dev/mmcblk0

p # list current partitions
o # to delete all partitions
n # new partition
p # primary partition
1 (one) # first partition
<enter> # default start block
<enter> # default end block
+4G # create a 4GB partition
w # write new partition to disk

#format newly created partition
mke2fs -L rootfs -j /dev/mmcblk0p1

#create mount point
mkdir /tmp/mnt

#mount SD Card
mount /dev/mmcblk0p1 /tmp/mnt

#cd /tmp/mnt
wget http://archlinuxarm.org/os/ArchLinuxARM-kirkwood-latest.tar.gz
tar -xzvf ArchLinuxARM-kirkwood-latest.tar.gz
rm ArchLinuxARM-kirkwood-latest.tar.gz

#Sync and reboot
sync
cd ..
umount /tmp/mnt
reboot

Is there anything I missed other than multiple sync commands?
Re: Pogoplug E04 not booting from SD Card or USB
January 10, 2021 05:15PM
Rhodess,

> #mount SD Card
> mount /dev/mmcblk0p1 /tmp/mnt

At this point, list the mount points to check if the partition is OK

mount

And list the /boot folder
ls -lart /tmp/mnt/boot

========

BTW, I suspect that this is the problem

mke2fs -L rootfs -j /dev/mmcblk0p1

I will unmount and try again. I also noticed during partitioning there was a mmc_erase: erase error -110, status 0x0 and it discarded blocks, but partitioned OK, or so I thought. I will try another SD card and a USB also, until I see one that shows the boot folder.

Thanks for the help bohdi

PS It doesn't seem to create the boot folder, I tried with 3 SD cards so far

Bodhi,

I mounted by SD card in another machine and get the following:

It looks like the are named differently in the boot folder could that be the issue?

I saw on the ArchLnux site mention of the newer ArchLnux kernels not loading if the mbr has zeros in sector 1B8-1BB, so I checked that and its fine.

Is there a link to a known good image that I can write to an SD to see if that works?

Rhodess,

You've listed the wrong folders. Should be

cd /media/rhodess/rootfs

ls -lart ./rootfs
ls -lart ./boot

or just

ls -lart /media/rhodess/rootfs
ls -lart /media/rhodess/rootfs/boot

Yes.This Arch rootfs is newer, was the reason. Apparently, in this version, Arch ARM has switched to booting with zImage for this box.

So now the mmc boot envs must be adjusted to conform to that.

Your u-boot is also old. So the envs are not good enough for booting witht the new rootfs.

Let me write a few steps in the next post.

Rhodess,

Mount the SD card rootfs on another Linux box like you did. Assuming it is mounted at /media/rhodess/rootfs.

cd /media/rhodess/rootfs/boot

Get the file name of this Pogolug V4 DTB file
ls -l ./dtbs/*pogo*
Assuming the file name is kirkwood-pogoplug_v4.dtb. If it was name differently in this Arch rootfs then use that name below

cp -a zImage zImage.fdt
cat ./dtbs/kirkwood-pogoplug_v4.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n ArchLinuxARM -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

And umount the SD card. Bring it back to the Pogo V4 and start the box.

====

Note that I don't know the kernel version in this rootfs so I name it ArchLinuxARM in the mkimage command above. To keep track of the correct version, you should regenerate the uImage again after you has booted successfully into Arch.

Hi bodhi,

Almost there!

It looks like its loading, but now I'm getting a kernel panic and it crashes

Looks like its crashing here:
VFS: Cannot open root device "mmcblk0p1" or unknown-block(179,1): error -30
[ 13.961137] Please append a correct "root=" boot option

Btw, my commands were as follows:

cd /media/rhodess/rootfs/boot
ls -l ./dtbs/*pogo*
cp -a zImage zImage.fdt
cat ./dtbs/kirkwood-pogoplug-series-4.dtb >> zImage.fdt

I will try redoing the card by logging in as root, after re-reading the output, it looks to me that it may be a write access issue

Right!

[ 13.943930] EXT4-fs (mmcblk0p1): write access unavailable, cannot proceed (try mounting with noload)

Check the card switch, move it to write position.

Quick question bodhi where you named ArchLinuxARM above, would that be "5.8.0-1-ARCH" based on my recent output?

I'm rebuilding so I thought I may as well have the correct name in the image.
e.g.
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n 5.8.0-1-ARCH -d zImage.fdt uImage

Thanks

Rhodess,

Yes, use this name so it can be referenced later: Linux-5.8.0-1-ARCH.

mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-5.8.0-1-ARCH -d zImage.fdt uImage

Well I thought I had it bodhi, It started to load up the kernel and then crashed. Once it hits this point it just hangs in a loop "40.219591] Exception stack(0xc7841d10 to 0xc7841d58)"

Here's my serial output:

Do you have any ideas?
Re: Pogoplug E04 not booting from SD Card or USB

Rhodess,

Since this is Arch rootfs, I can only make an educated guess: that this might have something to do with you SD card.

This should not happen:
[ 13.975348] VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly on device 179:1.

Are you using a SD adapter with microSD or full size SD card?

And try using USB rootfs to see if you will see the same problem.

Hi bodhi, I’m using an 8Gb SanDisk micro SD with adapter. I do have a Kingston 4Gb full size card though, so I can try that and also USB.

Thanks for the update
Re: Pogoplug E04 not booting from SD Card or USB

No luck bodhi, I used a SanDisk USB and a PNY 4GB full-size flash card, and I booted from both. I get a kernel panic in both cases but both look to be different issues. The flash card gives the VFS read error, but the USB gives the same error as the SanDisk flash card I used the other day
Here is the USB log:

Rhodess,

The SD card boot is actually is a litle bit better.

But at this point, you are seeing the same error with both USB and SD card. So I wonder whether this new Arch rootfs has some particular problem with this Pogo V4 box.

What you should do is to boot with the rootfs Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 on USB to confirm that the box is OK. And then go from there.

Hi bodhi, I just read through your post and to ensure I don't mess anything up, do I need to flash back to factory first, or am I OK to do this with my existing uboot?

If you create Debian rootfs on SD card then it will run the same way with your current u-boot settings. No need to adjust anything.

Quote
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

Step 4 needs adjustment like this:

4. Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with older u-boots (2012 or earlier). Do not do this step if you have installed the latest U-Boot for Kirkwood (or are installing this u-boot at the same time).

Please replace kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb below with the correct DTB name for your box (see the folder /media/sdb1/boot/dts for the exact spelling of your Kirkwood box name).

Generate the uImage with DTB embedded inside:
cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a zImage-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-pogoplug_v4.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mv uImage uImage.orig
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

After that bring the SD card to this box and power up. Watch serial console log and see if it will boot all the way into Debian.

========

Once you are in Debian, install the latest u-boot version. Note that after you installed new u-boot, and before reboot, you have to restore the original uImage (since the new u-boot will load the DTB file separately).

cd /boot
cp -a uImage uImage.pogo_v4
cp -a uImage.orig uImage

Rhodess,

You're almost there!

Power up, interrupt serial console.

And then change these 3 envs:

setenv set_bootargs_mmc 'setenv bootargs console=$console root=$mmc_root rootdelay=$rootdelay rootfstype=$rootfstype $mtdparts earlyprintk=serial'
setenv mmc_load_uinitrd 'ext2load mmc $device 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv mmc_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; run mmc_load_uimage; if run mmc_load_uinitrd; then bootm 0x800000 0x2100000; else bootm 0x800000; fi'

And do printenv again so I don't have to scroll back to previous posts to find it next time when needed :).
printenv

And then boot

boot

I'm currently logged in as root. I haven't updated or changed anything yet since in the previous post you wanted me to install the latest uboot version and then restore the original image.

Also in the post you referred me to it says to generate new ssh keys and upgrade. I didn't want to risk that at this point though since I don't know if you want to make further changes.

Yes, do generate new ssh keys so you know you have a Debian system of your own. No need to upgrade yet, though.

OK. So now we know the new Arch rootfs has some problem booting with this box. Not sure it is a common problem for all Kirkwood boxes, or just this Pogo V4.

At this point, you will need to make a decision whether to pursue running Arch rootfs, or run Debian. Let me know which is your preference.

=========

For both Arch or Debian, running new u-boot is better. But it will need some adjustment again to be able to boot Arch, if you plan to do so. The new u-boot will work for this Debian rootfs for sure. (Note that your Debian rootfs right now has the DTB embedded inside uImage, with new u-boot, you need to reverse Step 4, i.e. restore the original uImage).

If you decide to install new u-boot, then try UART booting using kwboot first, to ensure you have a rescue path. Here is an example for kwboot booting:

Re: Pogoplug E04 not booting from SD Card or USB

Thanks bodhi,

I have no preference really, either Arch or Debian. My main goal was to boot from the sd card, the assumption being that the port is less likely to be used vs the USB ports. so once I have it all running properly I intend to image the flash card for recovery/backup incase my sd card gets damaged, and also have it boot native, but without all the pogo services running.

Reading through the posts and Arch wiki, there are pro's and cons for both Arch and Debian. Since it will never be a pogo again, on account the company is bust, for me, usage would be a samba server, print server, possibly router etc.

So which would be the best for that, if either, then I would go for the one that's least likely to fail due to upgrades, or easier to recover etc.

I will go for the new u-boot though, which I assume is this one "uboot.2017.07-tld-1.pogo_v4.bodhi.tar" md5:e2c2b4927dcd8189f0c97dd81b72ad7e from uboot.2017.07-tld-1.pogo_v4.bodhi.tar, correct?

To summarise then, I would need to do the following, dependent on the Linux version:
Debian:
1. download kwboot-2016.05.tar and follow this UART Booting HowTo for Selected Kirkwood Devices
2. Make the setenv change for pogoplug v4 via this thread Need help/advice on brand new pogoplugV4
3. Install uboot.2017.07-tld-1.pogo_v4.bodhi.tar following steps 1-11
4. Restore the original uImage
5. Reboot

Arch:
Same as above, but adding additional changes to the pogo environment before proceeding with step 1.

Have I understood everything correctly?

Yes. That davygravy's post and the link I posted above: https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,51739,51919#msg-51919

No. You don't need to do any change in envs before installing new u-boot.

> 3. Install uboot.2017.07-tld-1.pogo_v4.bodhi.tar
> following steps 1-11

Step 1 to 11 includes every necessary envs change to the installed default envs image to boot this Pogo V4 box.

Yes.

No, complete the installation steps 1 to 11 first. And then modify a couple additional envs. This can be done later quite easily with uEnv.txt or permanent to flash.

So install it to boot Debian first. And then worry about Arch later.
