Trying again to unbrick my stora MS2110

Yeah, so looking at the Wiki again, I realized step 3 requires me to run dpkg from with stock os in order to create the correct uimage and uninitrd to boot old uboot, since I am on old uboot, but have no bootable OS, I may need to try and flash envs and new uboot from serial console. How safe is this? I realize if I mess up, I have a brick that is bootable ONLY by jtag, but will the system "freak out" if I overwrite uboot while it is running, or is uboot copied to RAM before execution, and run from RAM?

If writing uboot while booted from uboot isn't likely to crash my system, then is it better to attempt writing environment or uboot first?

No. You're misread it. run dpkg only when you upgrade kernel.

Note: If this is your first time installation, then you only need rootfs Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 (this has kernel linux-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 already installed). Please scroll down to 25 Aug 2019 section for download link and installation instruction.

After you booted with the basic rootfs Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 successfully, then you have Debian running on USB. Log in and upgrade kernel to the latest.

Hi

Especially for you, I will post a firmware dump later if you are interested in double loading.

Thanks AMD, but I don't need it. I'd rather do this my own way.

Getting stuck after booting:

It means you're missing the DTB. If you installed my latest u-boot then the DTB is loaded separately.

If you boot with stock u-boot then the DTB must be embedded inside uImage.

Interrupt serial console and

printenv
boot
Please post the entire bootlog (don't post excerpt).

This is stock uboot, with the old debian install (I forgot what date, but it was the one mentioned in the wiki for use with stock uboot). Also, I did specify the dtb fie. Unit doesn't autoboot, so I specified the boot commands by hand.

My Stora is powered off at the moment. I will power it up a bit later and post the requested logs/boot transcript and envs.

I just realized, all of the items you requested are listed in the last post on page 1. The only thing that has changed since then is I removed a few env vars.

Sure. But the entire boot log in one post will tell the whole story. That'll helps saving time to go back and reread posts. Especially when I'm going back and forth from multiple topics in this forum.

If I can see the boot log with printenvs in serial console, most of the time I can tell what the problem is right away, without asking more questions. We all are in a different time zones, too. It does not work like IRC chat where questions/asnwers happen instantly.

I made 4 posts in a row. That same info was in the posts right above the one you answered, and is up-to-the-minute also, as of last night.

I fixed the inability to load the USB by backing up the stick and reformatting as ext3. I originally used ext4.
The following was from August 14th:

aaronouthier,

I could not tell if you are running new u-boot or stock u-boot. And if new u-boot, which version?

And did you execute these commands

> ext2load usb 0:1 0x1c00000
> /boot/dts/kirkwood-netgear_stora_ms2000.dtb
> ext2load usb 0:1 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd
> ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage
> bootm 0x800000 0x1100000 0x1c00000

And then boot?

boot

I said in my post last night that I was running stock uBoot. I haven't yet been able to boot to USB, so I can't update uBoot, if I understand correctly.

I never executed just "boot". I used the "bootm" command that you referenced. System hangs, at the aforementioned spot, shortly after bootm command.

I realize you're helping many different folks, in your free time, and without pay. I sometimes start to get frustrated when I mention something, and you don't see it. I have to take a step and remember the first sentence in this paragraph. Perhaps I shouldn't make 4 different posts in a row. Thanks Bodhi, for all you do. I'll get this working someday...

aaronouthier,

OK, so booting with stock u-boot needs only uImage and uInitrd. There is no FDT capabilty, so the DTB cannot be loaded and run like with new u-boot.

ext2load usb 0:1 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd
ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage
bootm 0x800000 0x1100000

This error indicated that the uImage does not have the DTB embedded inside.

Quote

Error: unrecognized/unsupported machine ID (r1 = 0x0000020f).

Available machine support:

ID (hex) NAME
ffffffff Generic DT based system
ffffffff Marvell Kirkwood (Flattened Device Tree)

Please check your kernel config and/or bootloader.

In the rootfs, you must do Step 4

Quote

4b. Boot with DTB file embedded in the kernel image.Again, this step 4b is for stock U-Boot only.

Please replace kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb below with the correct DTB name for your box.

Generate the uImage and uInitrd (the kernel files vmlinuz-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 and initrd.img-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 were generated by dpkg in Step 3):
cd /boot
mv uImage uImage.orig
mv uInitrd uInitrd.orig
cp -a zImage-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-netgear_stora_ms2000.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n 5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T ramdisk -C gzip -a 0x00000000 -e 0x00000000 -n initramfs-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 -d initrd.img-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 uInitrd

Small issue, but easy to figure out ;p

cd /boot
mv uImage uImage.orig
mv uInitrd uInitrd.orig
cp -a zImage-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-netgear_stora_ms2000.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n 5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T ramdisk -C gzip -a 0x00000000 -e 0x00000000 -n initramfs-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 -d initrd.img-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 uInitrd

There was no file called 5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 present, so I substituted 4.12.1 for all occurrences of 5.13.6.

I completed the above, however, I now get:

I see the message about not able to open the RTC. I suspect my CR2032 battery is dead. I'll need to replace it. Could that have caused my Kernel Panic?

Cool!

Adjust your load addresses to load uInitrd higher:

ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd
ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage
bootm 0x800000 0x2100000

aaronouthier,

So the bootargs is incorrect.

Since you are booting with USB now, circle back to the generic instruction I wrote for booting Kirkwood box with stock u-boot (in the Wiki):

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,102054,105374#msg-105374

setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'
setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'
setenv load_uinitrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv usb_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; run load_uimage; if run load_uinitrd; then bootm 0x800000 0x2100000; else bootm 0x800000; fi'
setenv usb_bootcmd 'run usb_set_bootargs; run usb_boot'
setenv bootcmd 'usb start; run usb_bootcmd; usb stop; reset'

What you've missed is:
setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'

So:

setenv bootargs 'console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'
ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd
ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage
bootm 0x800000 0x2100000

Oh!

I'm embarrassed now. This is like the 3rd time that I'm being told to read the instructions better. I actually had those lines in there at one point, but used resetenv a few weeks ago, thinking I had something wrong. I of course then had to chainload AMD's uboot again to fix. I actually do try to figure things out on my own, I swear it.

I'm sure this will come as a complete shock and surprise, but I can be quite silly at times...

I will check this after the sun comes up. It's almost 4 AM here in So. Cal. I'm going back to sleep.

Well, sleep and I are having a love-hate relationship right now, heh-heh.

I am happy to report that we now have liftoff!

I had to modify 2 of the environment variables, since there is a maximum of 16 arguments per line, and because stock fw's search for flashware.img causes USB to be already started, and USB START borks usb functionality.

Here is what I have:
setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 earlyprintk=serial'
setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage'
setenv load_uinitrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv usb_boot 'mw 0x800000 0 1; run load_uimage; run load_uinitrd; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000;'
setenv usb_bootcmd 'run usb_set_bootargs; run usb_boot'
setenv bootcmd 'run usb_bootcmd; usb stop; reset'

I am updating the packages on usb system now, and will be rereading the directions before attempting to update uboot and environment.

Well, all is well that ends well!

uBoot and environment has been flashed, and although it was hinted at, I wasn't explicitly told to move uImage.orig and uInitrd.old to their original names, I realized I should before rebooting! Later on, I'll try updating the rootfs to the latest version.

I also need to find where I put the plastic shell for this thing and try to snap it back together. I hope there weren't any screws involved. It's been months since I disassembled my Stora!

I also need to set the proper eth_addr as listed on the bottom of the unit.

aaronouthier,

Congrats!

And thanks for the reminder,

I forgot to revise the instruction to take these into account. This stock u-boot is really ancient. Most of other Kirkwood plugs don't have these problems.
