Here's a non-truncated log of a boot with a USB 2 drive in the top port. I note that there's more error messages ("Bad device specification") when loading envs from usb & sata - but I don't know why.

One difference between logs 1, 2 and 3 might be that I'm using different USB drives on each boot - some older Sandisk Cruzer Fits (2.0) and a new Sandisk Ultra Fit (3.2). The older Cruzer has an led on it, while the new ones don't - and neither does the Ultra. Didn't think there'd be a difference between them, but maybe they've changed the hardware between 'models' and most people won't notice it.

Hope that helps explain the discrepancies.

The above is OK. They are not errors. Just the scanning for all potential USB and SATA disks drives.

And finally u-boot found the boot drive

scanning usb for storage devices... 1 Storage Device(s) found
device usb 0:1
1 bytes read in 20 ms (0 Bytes/s)
Found bootable drive on usb 0

Ah I see that was your question in a post before.

Here's a non-truncated log of a boot with a USB 2 drive in the top port. I note that there's more error messages ("Bad device specification") when loading envs from usb & sata - but I don't know why.

They are infornation only, not errors. Wish I can suppress them, but I can't :)

Ok, well you would know better than I. The last two that had that report differed from the first, and I thought it might be significant, so I pointed it out.

All of these booted and work, so I thought that was a success.

I migth be able to make them less noisy. But that will be some day when I can revisit this subject.

No worries. As long as it's expected, then I'm good with it. Was trying to point out a difference between boots, which didn't really make sense to me. Seems it's USB hardware, and when I get back I'll look at it further and update as needed.

OK cool! in the mean time I put this warning in the 1st post until I can figure out some weird message while flashing the default envs image.

Please do not use. I'm revising this installation instruction and upload new version

Things look normal in using, but nandwrite output some message that could be wrong. I want to make sure that I am seeing artifacts of a bad nandwrite binary version.

I've uploaded a new tarball. In this I updated the envs related files (u-boot kwb image is the same). The envs was updated slightly to correct typos. The envs image was updated to avoid misleading error message during flashing.

uboot.2023.04-tld-1.pogo_v4.environment.img
uboot.2023.04-tld-1.pogo_v4.environment
uboot.2023.04-tld-1.pogo_v4.boot.scr

This should be the final update.

I updated a previously updated 2023.04 with the newest version from Post 1, and it boots fine. I don't have a serial connection for another week, so I can only see dmesg output, and it looks fine. I corrected the 'ethaddr' to what's on the V4's label, but otherwise all vars are from the update. I see there's no 'cpu' in the LED trigger file, though I'm not sure that was added in this update.

I'll post the serial connection next week, and whatever's needed to confirm things.

dhargens,

CPU LED trigger is in the kernel, not in u-boot. I think I will release new Kirkwood kernel version sometime this week.

Thank you for this thread. Last week, via eBay, it inspired me to add a V4 to my Pogoplug collection. It was the last version I didn't own. I was able to use the shirt pin method to gain serial access and then install this latest U-Boot and Debian. I was a little rusty on the timing when trying to kwboot but after a few tries got it down pat!

I also followed your instructions and successfully got the new 2023.04 U-Boot Kirkwood PogoV4 working without any issue. I upgraded my Pogoplug V4 A3 from the last 2017.07 U Boot.

`
I have a 1TB hard drive that sits inside the top slot, but still boot off the usb 2.0 flash drive; I use the pogoplug for a home SAMBA server with just 2 Macs, 2 Windows and 1 chrombook.

I needed to briefly look for 'fw_printenv' as it was not in the uboot-tools; simply had to 'apt install libubootenv'.

On review of my old fw_printenv with the new one - I see that 'machid=f78' and 'arcNumber=3860' are no longer needed

I have learned and done a lot with your help; Thank you

That's right. The new default envs removed these envs.

Since a serial connection for the Pogoplug V4/Mobile is much harder than a serial connection for the Pogoplug E02, I thought I'd share a picture of my serial cable that uses the shirt pin method. This option eliminates the need for soldering.

You can firmly but carefully push each pin into the solder for each connection until they stick without falling. I cut off the top of the pins to get them to fit into the end of the cable connectors. The middle pin has tape around it to keep the 3 connections from touching. Just be careful not to push the pins too hard or you will end up with one sticking deep in your thumb like I did!

@bodhi thank you for this site and all your help!

Nice job! better than my original approach. I just used 3 test clips to hold the shirt pins and connect the serial module converter pins to the 3 test clips. This approach is very temporary (the whole contraption is fragile and could fall apart).

I went ahead and updated to the latest kernel (linux-6.3.5-kirkwood-tld-1-bodhi.tar.bz2 (02 Jun 2023)) on my new Pogoplug V4 and it stopped booting. I hooked up serial console and when booting it stops at the same spot below, whether regular booting or using kwboot. Do I have a hardware issue with this new box or have I done something wrong?

The appearance does look much like a HW problem, but I'd bet it is not. Just your envs are messed up.

At this point, the current envs on NAND come in to play. So its' likely that you envs were set to netconsole only. So look back in your installation (keeping a log of what you did during installation would be very helpful)

1. Did you install previous u-boot before? and did you set up netconsole? if you kept the log, or remember the serverip that you used for netconsole. Start netconsole on that box and see if the u-boot banner wil apper and you can interrupt the countdown.

2 . If the above did not work then try kwboot the older version (u-boot 2017.07). And I will suggest more recovery steps.

Further more, try finding your box in the network, and log in. It might have booted into Debian, but you can not see that in serial console. In this case, fixing the envs is easy.

I know better, but didn't keep the logs. Lesson learned. I did not try the previous u-boot (2017) and installed 2023.04 straight from stock. Yes, I had set up netconsole, but it wasn't working. I didn't think of trying to kwboot the older u-boot, so I tried it and it worked! I now have both serial and netconsole working, though for netconsole I only see the u-boot and not the kernel boot.

The last thing I did was update the kernel on this box and 2 other boxes. The other 2 boxes came back up fine but the new V4 with the 2023.04 had this issue. Here is what I have now:

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! LABEL=rootfs does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Cool! it is normal to see u-boot log only in netconsole. Further set up is needed if you want to see kernel booting. But it will not be a complete log like with serial console.

=====

Looking at the log, the USB drive was not initialized by the kernel. So my guess is you are pluging a USB 3.0 thumb drive. Which port are you using? one of the 2 USB 3.0 in the back, or the USB 2.0 on the top?

If the USB 3.0 is attached to the USB 2.0 port on top, it's problemmatic (either use USB 2.0 thumb drive, or a USB 3.0 hub wih the top port).

If the USB 3.0 drive is attached to one of the 2 ports in the back, then it might be the case that this brand/model/capacity (please post this info) has some quirks. Try attaching to the other USB 3.0 port.

I was using a USB 2.0 but it was plugged into one of the USB 3.0 ports in the back. I plugged the USB 2.0 into the top and it works!

I don't know what happened to make it stop booting. I had previously tried moving the usb around without luck. The only thing I changed here to get it working again was kwboot with the 2017 version. I did not make that permanent or change any other environment variables. That being said, and according to the log, it's using the 2023 version of uboot again. I'm confused by that but glad it's working again. Thanks for your help!

Cool!

I think we should taking advantage of booting with USB 3.0 rootfs drive in one of the 2 ports in the back. It'll make the rootfs running much faster. I'm running with the Sandisk Ultra Fit (USB 3.0) rootfs and it boots consistently.

@bodhi one last quick question. I noticed a file named uInitr in the boot folder that I've never noticed before. Should that file be there or can it be deleted? I thought I may have left the d off the end when copying and pasting earlier in the upgrade process. Thank you.
