DS418J no ethernet
September 30, 2025 07:01AM
Hello all,
A friend gave me a DS418J for repair. The ethernet slot is dead, there is no link created and the NAS is not recognized on the network.
I tried :
- hard reset
- with and wiohout hard disk
- 3 cables (all OK...)
- USB adapter to ethernet (not good)

Power LED (blue is ON), but status LED is blinking green.

I add a link to the UART port on the MB for see the boot log, below the result :

bneben,

I don't have this NAS. So the following is my observation and educated guess.

This problem is probably related to the fact that this box use the Realtek 8169 NIC. And its MTU is set to jumbo frame.

In order for jumbo frame to work,

1. All nodes in the entire 1GBs LAN must run at 1Gbps. So each box connected to the network must has 1Gbps NIC.
2. The MTU must be set to the same number.

If either of the above is not satisified, the negotiation will fail.

Here in the log:
> [ 11.639380] r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver
> 2.32.5-LK-NAPI loaded
> [ 11.673722] r8169 98016000.gmac eth0:

> [ 11.684018] r8169 98016000.gmac eth0: jumbo
> features [frames: 9200 bytes, tx checksumming:

So it is 9200, and the box probably cannot negotiate this frame size within your LAN.

> 100 Mbps
> [ 632.469767] r8169 98016000.gmac eth0: link
> down

So the speed is down to 100 Mbps, and the link keep going up/down because Auto Negotiation is active.

====

If you can log into the Diskstation DSM, you can try to use ethtool to set the MTU and Auto Negotiation to a typical settings for a Gbits network and see if the link will be stable.

For example, turn off auto negotiation after the NIC is running, at the Linux shell command line:
ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off
After you've done this, the NIC will stay up at 100Mbs. And you can connect with SSH.

And then set the MTU to 1500 (try if you can, figure out the ethtool command, I've forgot the exact syntax).
ethtool --help
And turn Auto Negotiation back on. After you see the speed is 1Gbps, turn it off again.

Wow thank you ! it seems that this is a good way to solve the issue ! I will try this evening

I'm back soon for an update !
Re: DS418J no ethernet

Hi

Issue not solved yesterday...
I tried to connect the NAS directly to my computer, it is more easier than modify my switch.

So, after the cable plugged, I tried :
- to force the link to 1000 fullduplex on my PC => same issue
- to force the link to 100 fullduplex on my PC => connexion is established but to 10mbits !

In the second case above, the LAN LED in the NAS is green, and the log show a "link up to 10mbits". But no IP discovered by a scan on my computer, and no server detected by Synology assistant.

I'm blocked...
I verified lot of things on the mainboard (RJ45 slot, tracks, capacitor, resistors, pairs ...), all seems "ok" (for me)

I exposed the issue to Chatgpt, and he proposal me to install manually the DSM system on th hard disk, and try to boot on it. This way will give me the possibility to send commands to the NAS (because it is not possible righ now with Putty and the UART, I can only try to log me but no root/admin account works).

I attached the procedure shared by chatgpt... I will try this ! PS : sorry it is in French

Did you try adjusting the MTU like bohdi suggested?
Re: DS418J no ethernet
October 02, 2025 11:08AM
I tried with a MTU @ 4088, 9014, 16128 (I can't set other value)
The only way to make a link is to set the speed @10Mbits (not 100 as noted above)

My controler is a RTL8125.

It's the correct solution if you don't care about what's in the HDD.

Attach the ethernet cable to a switch like before. Power up and interrupt serial console at countdown
U-Boot 2015.07-g428cfe7-dirty (May 16 2018 - 10:33:51 +0800)

CPU : Cortex-A53 Quad Core
Board: Realtek QA Board
DRAM: 1 GiB
mapping memory 0x20000000-0x40000000 non-cached
In: serial
Out: serial
Err: serial
Hit any key to stop autoboot: 0

List the current envs (to see what was the ipaddr before you set it like below).
printenv
And set your ipaddr to a sane value in your LAN, and try to bring up the network. For example, if your router is 192.168.0.1
setenv ipaddr 192.168.0.100
ping 192.168.0.1
If the ping was successful, then the network is up. Try setting up internet
setenv gatewayip 192.168.0.1
setenv netmask 255.255.255.0
ping 8.8.8.8

If you successfully ping the router and google.com then you have network in u-boot. Try booting into DSM
boot
See if the behavior change.

======

After doing the above, and if the link is still up/down. And if you had network in u-boot. You can reinstall DSM at u-boot prompt using a different HDD.

Reboot the box and set up envs for network like above. And boot. It will allow you to install DSM because there is nothing on the HDD.

After you've installed DSM, you can create new admin account (using the web page) to log in. Use admin as user name for this administrative account.

Unfortunatly, I can't stop the boot, I already tested.

I hit a key, but the boot don't stop...

Yes my hard disk is empty and can be used for test

Try Control-C.

OK I will try.
Concerning the MTU value, it seems that the line that indicate 9200o is a default value, like the MAC address just above (00:10:20:30:40:50)
The MAC and MTU are set further down in the log :

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:11:32:97:53:D9
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

Yes, DSM must have failed and set to 1500.

The bottom line is you need to boot into DMS and fix the problem inside. The main problem seems to be Auto Negotiation. The NIC kept trying for 1Gbps and got 100Mbps so you dont have network up long enough to log in. If you test the network in u-boot successfully, like I suggested, you can install DSM and set your admin password, and then log in with either serial or SSH to work around this problem.

Unfortunately, nothing worked (the manually created disk), nor did being able to stop the NAS from booting (I think the timeout is set to 0).

However, I successfully enter in root account by remove the backup battery and enter the 101-0101 password, which gives me access to BusyBox v1.16.1 (but many commands don't work with this box...).

How about start pounding Control-C as soon as the box is power on, don't wait for the countdown.

Nothing can stop the boot :/
I tried different keys / ctrl+C (and others) / lot of time during the boot (and directly after the power up sequence)...

It seems that the inputs are not validate before the line "START /linuxrc.syno" (the inputs caracteres are showed after this line).

I can acces to the busybox with a root access, no more :/
I tried lot of things with the network (Speed connection, MTU, ...)

No keys are view as an input in the "boot sequence"... Until the line "START /linuxrc.syno".
I tried all keys.

But I have made a big jump this week ! With Busybox, I was authorized to enter some commands, so I put an ip-fix, connected the NAS directly to my computer and set my PC to the same network (without gateway, important !)
I locked the speed to 10mbits, and I'm connected to the nas successfully.

After that, I installed DSM on my drive, and configure it.
All seems OK in DSM.
But the connexion is lost if I set a speed to 100 or 1000mbits :/ Again same issue as above.

For me it seems a hardware issue... Maybe the RJ45 slot, or the input filters (resistors and capacitor) on the cable side on the MB. There are magnetics transformers also on the MB, but I don't think that this is the cause...

It is designed as showed on the picture attached. Strange things, I measured the values for the 4 resistors, and only one is 50ohms. One other is 75, other is 127 and last is 127 too... Without cables, all values should be 49.9ohms (or 50 with my multimeter ;) )

Yes, autoneg is off.
Re: DS418J no ethernet
October 14, 2025 01:48AM
Update :

Following the RJ45 design, and as explained in this link :
https://www.we-online.com/components/media/o721295v410%20RD016%20EN-GB-Ethernet%20Front%20End.pdf

I have a physical issue, I don't know where right now, but I have made progress on the subject.

I used my DLink switch for launch a diag on the port where the NAS is plugged, and the result is that the pair "4" is shorted. All other pairs are "OK".
With my multimeter, I checked :
- the impedance of each pair => 1.4ohm each
- the impedence between each pair => 180 ohms between pair 4 and 1, 203ohm between pair 4 and 2 or 3, 150ohms between 2 and 3, 203ohm between 4 and 3, 124ohms between 3 and 1 (values measured on the RJ45 port)
- the value of each resistor on the Bob smith filter => RPair 1 : 128, RPair 2 : 73, RPair 3 : 73, RPair 4 : 50
- capacitor is 1.2nf

In reSume, values of each R of the filter should be equal, it is not the case.
There is no physical damages
Capacitor of the filter return a true value

New step, I will desolder the resistors / capacitors of the filter, and check again... The magnetics tranformers protect the board, so if an over voltage was applied, the filter should be dead :/
