Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-label/rootfs does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! LABEL=rootfs does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

You are running a really old rootfs. But that's not the reason. The reason is with your roots setup.

Get more information as described below.

Mount your USB rootfs on another Linux box. Assuming it is mounted as /media/sdb1.

e2label /dev/sdb1
cd /media/sdb1/
cat /media/sdb1/fstab
cat /etc/debian_version
cd /media/sdb1/boot
ls -lart

And post the entire log of the above here (including the comands).

OK I see:
[ 0.000000] Linux version 4.15.2-kirkwood-tld-1 (root@tldDebian) (gcc version 6.3.0 20170516 (Debian 6.3.0-18)) #1 PREEMPT Fri Feb 9 01:52:00 PST 2018

Still please do what I asked above.

I guess this is what you wanted to run

[root@alarm boot]# cat /media/flash/etc/debian_version
9.4

Ben,

Quote

[root@alarm ~]# e2label /dev/sdb1
ROOTFS

This partition label should be rootfs (lowever case).

That's the only thing could have been the error. So relabel it and try booting again.

Once you know things, it's just simple like that. It's working now. I spent 3 nights scratching my head on this. It took you 3 seconds...

Thank you.

Hi bodhi,

Can you take a look at my uboot env setting? My USB drive is plugged into the first USB port and my portable Hard Drive is on the second. When I boot the E02, I usually have to take out the HD first so the system can know it should boot from the USB drive. If I don't do that, very often it tries to boot from the HD and then hangs. I remember I followed a post here to change the uboot env to boot from the USB drive first but it didn't seem to work. If you spot any problem, how can I fix it? I'd be grateful if you can help me figure this out. It's been bothering me for years.

Ben,

It is a very typical booting problem for a multi-partition environment system.

I've solved this problem with the new u-boot. Note that you had to use a specific label for the main root file system and the lable is rootfs. The scanning logic in the envs will look for that and boot the system correctly.

If you have one or more HDDs resides in the system, just make sure:

1. It does not contain a root file system in it. This is because u-boot will search for the kernel file /boot/uImage, and use the 1st one it found to boot the system.

2. And avoid using the partition label rootfs for any of the HDD partitions. Then it will work perfectly, it does not matter how many drives you plug in later or leave attached.
