Pogoplug Series 4 V4-A03-01 PreInternet new uboot + dumb dumb = Kernel Panic
January 23, 2021 08:09PM
Hello,
I picked up a new old stock Pogoplug Series 4 (V4-A03-01) recently after coming across this hackaday article.
I then watched the youtube uploads from Films by Kris.
This then lead me to Kris's "show notes" he posted on paste bin.
Hopefully adding the links and keywords will help others find this.

These are the commands I tried while following Kris's example (copied from pastebin):
Quote

#connect
screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200,cs8,-parenb,-cstopb,-hupcl
#list partition
cat /proc/partitions
cat /proc/mtd
#remount / (root) as read/write
mount -o remount,rw /
#change root password
passwd root
#start telnetd or ssh server (both are already there)
#startup script can be found here
#(might want to enable dropbear and telnet and disable pogo services 'hbmgr.sh'):
vi /etc/init.d/rcS
#mount sdcard
mkdir /mnt/sdcard
mknod /dev/mmcblk0 b 179 0
mknod /dev/mmcblk0p1 b 179 1
mount /dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt/sdcard
#mount USB drive
mkdir /mnt/usb
mknod /dev/sda b 8 0
mknod /dev/sda1 b 8 1
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb
#add these lines to /etc/fstab
/dev/sda1 /mnt/usb vfat defaults 0 0
/dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt/sdcard vfat defaults 0 0
The busybox install looked straight forward. I used an USB drive to transfer the busybox binary and everything seemed to be working. With the new busybox binary mounted to /tmp, I tested several new commands and everything seemed to work. So I copied /bin/busybox to a USB drive, and replaced the original binary with the new one. Kris lists the command he used to link everything on PB:
Quote

busybox --list|while read c;do echo $c;ln -s /bin/busybox $c;done
This is where things went south for me. I got a bunch of warnings about each command with a message (IIRC) calling something about each one illegal. This ended with an infinitely repeating "#" prompt. I let it sit for a few hours, but nothing changed and not knowing what else to do, I rebooted, then got kernel panic (my bootlog is attached to this post along with results of several other uboot commands and the kwboot versions too).

Questions:
Why does does my original Pogoplug printenv look so much different than the others I've seen posted here?
The lines with tabs seem to be unusual:

I thought I would check in and see what the more experienced people here thought I should do next. This device has never had ethernet connected. Is there a copy of the complete stock pre-internet connected image somewhere already?
Is it possible to recover the original OS at this point? Do I dump the NAND with the original memory display command in uboot, decompress it somehow and try to modify it, or is there some other way to recover?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
-Jake

Restating questions for easier unpacking:
1. Why does does my original Pogoplug printenv look so much different than the others I've seen posted here?
2. Is there a copy of this stock pre-internet-connected image somewhere already?
3. Is it possible to recover the original OS at this point?
4. Do I dump the NAND with the original memory display command in uboot, decompress it somehow and try to modify it, or is there some other way to recover?
+5. What other questions should I be asking in order to learn more about embedded Linux and apply this experience to other devices?

Jake,

Forget all about what you've read about this device.

See these 2 posts:

Debian:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

U-Boot:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,12381

Basically, you can intall new u-boot and Debian rootfs (i.e. latest Linux kernel) from inside stock OS (in one session). Stock FW will be no longer relevant after that.

Thanks for the reply Mr Bodhi :-)
I can't log into the original OS though. I only have access to the original uboot cli (then kernel panic b4 user space loads.

Jake,

Are you the same Jake here?

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,7852,114859#msg-114859

You stock OS seems to be corrupted. So now you should use kwboot to boot the box into Debian on USB and then install new u-boot.

Basically, you can kwboot the box using the latest Pogo V4 u-boot image uboot.2017.07-tld-1.pogo_v4.mtd0.kwb

And then boot into the rootfs Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2. There is no need to change any u-boot env.

- Example of kwboot (ignore this if you already know how):

Yup. The same indeed.
...I thought I was on the right path with kwboot. The oddity of my environment variables is the only reason I asked.
I had to order more USB drives though. It looks like kwboot doesn't like any of my sdcard adapters. It labels the initial partition type as DOS, and it spits out "EHCI timmed out on TD - token=..." with all variations I have tried. I used the Gnome Disk Utility and mke2fs to completely wipe the drives, including the boot table of a spare USB flash and several spare sdcards formatted as ext3, and ext4, but they all have the same result. The last log also has a spot that mentions ext4 on the file below. I don't recall what it said when I formatted ext3, but I do recall seeing the "Partition Type: DOS" message.

I think the issue is my flash media, but I tried:
Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2
(w/ step 4 and wo/)
uboot.2017.07-tld-1.pogo_v4.mtd0.kwb
uboot.2014.07-tld-1.pogo_v4.mtd0.kwb

Probably the wrong place to ask, but do you have any advice on an easier path into JTAG with embedded Linux on these devices? I have a FT2232 breakout, and I've etched my own Goodfet42, but I have not figured out a way to work with SWD on these (something I've needed before). I haven't made a solid attempt at using them well either. I'm on Fedora SB (mostly)/Gentoo on this machine, and I just got urjtag to mess with.
Every time I've tried messing with JTAG I find myself in a Grand Canyon size rabbit hole. My last attempt involved trying to load a SAMD21 with the Arduino bootloader. By the time I emerged from that project I had a STM32 working with micropython and a desire to never touch a SAMD chip again :-)

Jake,

So the USB was initialized by u-boot.

Yes.

No need for JTAG. You won't get better result with JTAG, as you can boot with serial console.

The issue is the USB drive. Try using a SanDisk brand USB thumb drive. The error "EHCI timed out on TD" happens with some older USB controller on the drives. My experience is the SanDisk USB is best for booting.

Usually kwboot should work. But the worst case is you have to flash u-boot in serial console and then try to overcome that error. We'll come to that when all else failed.

Fo rnow, try slowing down the boot process this way:

- kwboot with uboot.2017.07-tld-1.pogo_v4.mtd0.kwb
- interrupt serial console
- Initialize the USB drive

usb reset
and then wait 10 seconds
run set_bootargs
run bootcmd_exec

See if by waiting long enough to let the USB to settle down, you can get it to load the kernel and run it.
