Restore Pogoplug V4 to factory State
January 03, 2015 09:52PM
Hix i saw the topic with IPTester related with recovering his pogoplug v4 and i would like to know if you could help me to restore it to factory state. I did some ArchLinux mod (post here: http://blog.qnology.com/2014/07/hacking-pogoplug-v4-series-4-and-mobile.html) and i really didn't like it. After that i did a workaround to start it from scratch but it didn't restore it completely. I still see the uboot file on my root folder. I also did some optware samba mod because i found that it was what i was looking for since the beginning (link here for instructions: http://www.razva.ro/how-to-install-samba-on-pogoplug-4/) but for some reason, every time i restart my pogoplug, it looses or erases the whole samba installation and i have to reinstall everything again. I think it has to do with the initial mod, that's why i would like to know how to flash it to factory state.
I really appreciate your help on this as i really like this device and i would not like to loose it :S.

Hi Again Bodhi, i think when i saw your post it was too late. I tried several tutorials and at the end i managed to "brick it". Then i found your post (http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,18153,18200) regarding the full nand flash using kwboot. however, it didn't end as expected, i got stuck in the variables part and i don't know how to load the script using serial because the pogoplug doesn't loads correctly. Below the output of my Setenv command:

No you did not brick it! all you need to do now is to create a USB rootfs and boot with it. Once you got in Debian, you can go back to stock easily. Follow the instruction in this thread to create the rootfs using the 3.16 verison:

Quote

Updated 02 Sept 2014:

Rootfs Debian-3.16.0-kirkwood-tld-2 was uploaded. This rootfs is to keep in sync with kernel Linux-3.16.0-kirkwood-tld-2 (and its new features).

Take it to the Pogo and cold start.

So the idea is that after i manage to boot from debian i must then follow your instructions to restore the factory image as described on the initial link you posted?

Exactly. It's also possible to do it in serial console/net console, but the syntax is not as friendly as in Linux.

Sorry, I'm going to offer some different advice from Bodhi...

All you really need to do is setup a debian/alarm usb drive and follow this tutorial so that you can boot back into the default Pogoplug OS - http://blog.qnology.com/p/pogoplug-v4-boot-default-pogoplug-os.html

Don't mind that the kwb file is on the root, it doesn't impact anything.

Once you're booting the default Pogoplug OS, follow this tutorial for Optware/SAMBA - http://blog.qnology.com/2013/11/how-to-install-optware-and-samba-on.html

You might even want to consider booting Optware/samba directly off NAND if you're brave and understand what's going on in the tutorial - http://blog.qnology.com/p/pogoplug-v4-optware-and-samba-on-nand.html

Regarding the Optware tutorial you used (http://www.razva.ro/how-to-install-samba-on-pogoplug-4/), maybe I'm missing it (I don't think so), but it doesn't cover the auto mounting of the /opt partition and starting the samba service after a reboot (which is the exact issue you're having). You need to run the last three line after reboot (not to confuse you more, but your should be able to add those three lines rcS file).

@grayman4hire,

Are you sure that it will help to run the Dockstar orgininal u-boot on the Pogo V4? I don't doubt it will run Pogo OS, but will that allow the CE Pogoplug service registration? i.e. as in the original condition with the serial number and all that?

Hey @bodhi,

Too funny. You've been in doubt ever since I mentioned wanting to boot the default Pogoplug OS on the PPV4. :)

Yes it works and yes you'll be able to register the service. The original blparam env variable and SVCID is untouched. From CE prospective, it's all the same just like on the E02.

I was actually wondering how the pogoplug service would work using your NAND backups. I would assume the SVCID and MACAddress would just need to be updated.

Basically, by going this route, @FelipeC has the best of both world - the ability to boot ALARM/Debian and the default Pogoplug OS (with Optware/SAMBA).

@gray,

Now I really think it over (not the 1st time :)) I agree it would work. Because how I wrote the instruction to flash u-boot image, it would leave the stock envs untouched :)

OTOH, the mtds restoration procedure would need CESVCID and MAC addr adjusted for pogoplug service to work, because it actually needs to replace the entire 1M. This is needed because sometime mtd0 was wiped out by hacking (you might consider this).

Excellent works!

Thanks for your wise words guys, but now i'm a bit confused.
Bodhi, does that means that the suggestion from grayman4hire is not entirely functional?
grayman4hire, you're totally right i want to restore the v4 to factory to start over, with the service registration fully functional and also samba enabled, i don't need more for now (i really don't want to break it agai XD) but does Bodhi explanation means that your guide misses some steps?

I will wait for your wise answers to continue my "cleanup"!

Thanks again for all your help.
Re: Restore Pogoplug V4 to factory State

FelipeC,

> Bodhi, does that means that the suggestion from
> grayman4hire is not entirely functional?

Not really. gray's suggestion is perfectly OK if you want to continue having the new u-boot to boot back to newer Debian/Arch version. But it also has a setup where you can boot old u-boot and Pogo OS so you can use Pogo service. But it's not stock condition, it's a hybrid.

OTOH, if you flash the stock mtd0 like in my post, you will be 100% stock. With the condition that you will need to reset the u-boot envs to restore the original CESVCID and MAC address from your box settings (because after flashing, they are my Pogopug settings, since I dumped this mtd0 from my own box).

So depending what your goal is, and pick one approach.

Im a bit traditional actually, so i prefer to restore everything to stock, test it and then if i'm feeling intrepid, i might go again and follow gray's steps to make it samba enabled again!!

Thanks for all your help, i will let you guys know how did it go when i finish!!!!

OK. Note that you will need to use blparam to set these 2 envs if inside Pogo OS, or just use setenv to set them in serial console (no net console after you flashed back to stock).

Which variables are exactly the ones i will need to modify? i will do everything using serial.

cesvcid
ethaddr

Find them in you current envs, or in old log.

2. i didn't get the part of MTD1 2 3 and 4 restore
3. where should i exactly put the MTD0 and the Flash_erase should be run from serial or from USB?

thanks in advance.

Re: Restore Pogoplug V4 to factory State

FelipeC,

Unplug everything else but the USB rootfs and reboot. The SD card presents has caused problem booting (need more envs adjustment if you want to boot with both plugged in).

And see "B. Mounting rootfs in multi-drive configuration" in this post for how to set up to boot with multiple drives:

Was the usb formatted as EXT3? did you create the rootfs while logged in as root? and did you do a few sync commands before unmounting the USB drive?

After that have been verified and it still has problem mounting rootfs. Then use the label approach:

And see "B. Mounting rootfs in multi-drive configuration" in this post for how to set up to boot with multiple drives:

Ok Bodhi, so rootfs is running now, however, i can't make the flash_erase to be recognized. also, still confused with the MTD1, mtd2, mtd3 and mtd4 restore. How should i define the number of blocks for each one.

thanks in advance.

In the new rootfs, to get all the NAND tools, install u-boot-tools:
apt-get install u-boot-tools

You don't need to restore mtd1,2,3,4. Only need to restore mtd0. Use the instruction in the thread (How to restore section)

@Felipe,

Please redo the flashing, get only the relevant commands and their output and post here.

Hi Again Bodhi, im really sorry for the previous post, i tried to erase it but i couldn't.

I did the whole flash again and i manage to get to the terminal console. However every time i reboot the device, it doesn't start anymore, so i have to re flash it and get to the terminal point again. Is there anything that i could do from there?
Thanks and again, sorry for the whole console output, i will be more careful next time.

Usually, if this happen after a successful flashing of u-boot, is because something to do with the envs or the rootfs. So

- Connect with serial console, power up
- Interrupt serial console and get the output of
printenv
and then
boot

I'll take a look of the envs and the kernel booting progress, perhaps the envs were just not set correctly.

Hi Bodhi,
I reflashed it again and did what you asked me for.
Below the output of the serial after interrupting and then the boot.

d4rk50u1@ubuntu:~/Downloads/test/kwboot-tool$ ./kwboot -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyS1 -b uboot.2014.07-tld-2.pogo_v4.mtd0.kwb -p
Sending boot message. Please reboot the target...\
Sending boot image...
(i deleted this part to avoid huge amout of lines but it just finished okay.

FelipeC,

You have only booted with UART, not flashing any thing. Follow the instruction in the u-boot release thread and flash it completely.
