You would do a nandwrite in Debian to restore that mtd1.

But first you will need to check the mtd layout after logging into Debian

cat /proc/mtd
cat /etc/fw_env.config
fw_printenv

Verifying that everything is normal. And it is very important to make sure that you will not overwrite mtd0 (where u-boot is).

Before you do anything, backup mtd0 the same way. and then try UART booting with that mtd0 backup to make sure you have a rescue path (if something goes wrong).

If you have problem with UART booting, please post questions. I would try to do this successfully before messing with NAND mtd. As you see below, if things goes wrong (eg. typos, ...) then you could brick the box.

========

Restore the backup mtd1 as followed:

1. Erase mtd1
flash_erase /dev/mtd1

2. Write image to NAND
nandwrite /dev/mtd1 mtd1-ix4-200d.img

Hey, Im trying to boot this box with 4 x 6Tb disks and therefore disks partitioned as GPT.

Has anyone managed to do this without using hybrid partitioning?

I can boot from USB and all 4 x 6Tb are detected but I'd rather move the install to disk so that I can do OMV etc.

Disks at u-boot are seen as: (this is just two of them)
scanning bus for devices...
Device 0: (0:0) Vendor: ATA Prod.: ST6000NM021A-2R7 Rev: SN03
Type: Hard Disk
Capacity: 1528862.5 MB = 1493.0 GB (3131110576 x 512)
Device 1: (1:0) Vendor: ATA Prod.: ST6000NM021A-2R7 Rev: SN03
Type: Hard Disk
Capacity: 1528862.5 MB = 1493.0 GB (3131110576 x 512)

Is there any setenv commands I can run to "test" gpt boot?

ide reset

And it will show the capacity. But based on your log above, it already seems wrong.

> I can boot from USB and all 4 x 6Tb are detected

So that is your fallback option.

Create an Ext3 partititon on one of the HDDs. Copy the USB rootfs content (or create a new rootfs on one of the HDD) into it.

And label the USB partition as kernel (something other than rootfs). Remove everything on the USB except /boot folder.

So you have the kernel files uImage and uInitrd on USB /boot folder. But the rootfs is on the HDD. And then label the rootfs on the HDD partition "rootfs".

When you boot, then kernel files on USB will be loaded, but when the rootfs is mounted by the kernel, it is the HDD rootfs. This way you can format all 4 drives as GPT 6TB HDD. And the rootfs is on HDD.

Of course, you need to list your u-boot envs so I can check they are ready to boot this way.

I forgot, also try
scsi reset

However, we don't really care much to find out, if you are going boot with USB kernel and HDD rootfs.

Yeah, scsi works but as you see, u-boot thinks they are dos partition.

I'm about to disappear for two weeks leave but ill get stuck into this when Im back. I like your idea of using the USB for just the kernel files but ill also try the hybrib partitioning to see how that goes.

Do you think there is any way sheevaplug could be manipulated to run from nvram?? Im not much great with hardware/software build stuff so is it a waste without Lenovo source? I've seen it mentioned here a little but I'd be happy to hound Lenovo if it was worth getting the source :-)

Why sheevaplug? do you mean this ix4-200d kernel files can be stored in flash?

Or do you mean perhaps I can roll new u-boot for this box, since it is so close to the sheevaplug? I forgot the previous conversations (I have too many things going on) if you tried the sheevaplug u-boot, please link to that post :)

I'm not always great at trying to get a message across :-)

Forgive me.

Sheevaplug because it loads and works great via kwboot. Reto that started this thread had no luck loading it from NVRAM.

I wouldnt ask you to roll a new version for me but would this be something I could attempt myself by following docs or would I need a lot more experience?

CodeJACK,

The quickest way is to find this ix4-200d box stock u-boot mtd0 backup somewhere. Or somebody has this box and willing to post a serial boot log, and dump the mtd0 partition on flash to a file. You will be able to use this box fully just by kwboot that mtd0 dump and boot the rootfs Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2. After that you will be able to flash it.

Search for user DaMacc in this forum. DaMacc might have dumped stock u-boot for this box. We created the kernel DTS for this box back in circa 2015.

========

Re new u-boot: if you are willing to be a tester for a while. Rolling new Kirkwood u-boot for this box is quite easy for me (take hours, not days), but this will be a lot of work for you. I don't know any tutorial, and will not be able to guide you.

Testing could take many calendar days, since we are probably on different time zones. Oftenly the last features might take the major part of the time we will spend if something is unknown and we can't find it. But at that point it will be quite usable, and that you will probably be able to flash it

So give it a day or 2 to search this forum, or elsewhere. If you still can't find mtd0 dump, post back and I'll have something for you to run kwboot test.

And not to worry, if I roll new u-boot, it is not for you personally, it is for public consumption :)

Awesome, I'm here ( or will be again in two weeks) to use and abuse to test whatever is needed on this box. I have the stock u-boots already and even found the original recovery files on the old nas-central web archive. Here is links for future reference to this content:
https://web.archive.org/web/20170620092058/http://forum.nas-central.org/viewforum.php?f=251&sid=b1715d5d825de37d2578f7eb33be095b

Instructions and reference post that detail how to use recovery/conversion

Conversion software needed to make a non cloud edition of this box, into the cloud edition

So right now, I have the stock u-boot installed and working fine booting from USB with your latest Debian. End state for me would be to have a current u-boot that would support GPT disk boots and then ease the usage of larger sata disks and boot direct to your latest debian installed to the sata disks. Boot and rootfs being on some sort or RAID volume.

Cool!

Now some info gathering for new u-boot. Boot with serial console and interrupt it at count down. And,

help
printenv
md.l 0xF1010000 8
md.l 0xF1010100 1
md.l 0xF1010140 1

And then boot with whatever envs you are using to boot USB rootfs. Log in to Debian, and

cat /proc/mtd

Please post everything in this serial console session on your terminal (from u-boot banner until the output of cat /proc/mtd).

Hi CodeJACK,

Most everything looks good. Except,

[ 5.690808][ T1] Creating 3 MTD partitions on "orion_nand":

[ 5.728420][ T1] wireguard: WireGuard 1.0.0 loaded. See www.wireguard.com for information.

This looks like a bug in my DTS from way back :)

So try,

Add this env:
setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=orion_nand:0x100000@0x0(u-boot),0x0500000@0x100000(uImage),-(rootfs)"
Adjust this env
setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts earlyprintk=serial'

And boot, this time we only need to see in Debian:
dmesg
cat /proc/mtd

This looks like a bug in my DTS from way back :)

So try,

Add this env:
setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=orion_nand:0x100000@0x0(u-boot),0x0500000@0x100000(uImage),-(rootfs)"
Adjust this env
setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts earlyprintk=serial'

And boot, this time we only need to see in Debian:
dmesg
cat /proc/mtd

Note that I still need to see the output above.

===========================

But here is the new u-boot initial version (see attached).

kwboot with this new u-boot, hopefully will boot to the countdown and not crashing :)

And then do some tests.

Test Ethernet (with cable connect to eth0, i.e port 0)
setenv ipaddr <your box static ip address> # choose some IP addr appropriate for your box
setenv serverip <your router IP address>
ping $serverip

Test storage devices
usb reset
usb part
sata init
sata part

Get somemore info

bdinfo
pinmux status -a
mtdparts

Please capture everything (verbatim) and post the log here. I'd like to see if there is errors.

And then you can reset to boot back to stock u-boot.
reset

setenv ipaddr <your box static ip address> # choose some IP addr appropriate for your box
setenv serverip <your router IP address>
ping $serverip

IP address such as 192.168.0.100 if your router is 192.168.0.1. No need to blank out these numbers. And the 100 in 192.168.0.100 could be any valid number range 2--255.

setenv ipaddr 192.168.0.100
setenv serverip 192.168.0.1
ping 192.168.0.1

ethaddr and eth1addr are are the box MAC addresses, should be blanked out for privacy.

CodeJACK,

Strange, you've used setenv before in stock u-boot as shown above.

Hi bodhi, sorry for the delay but Im back in action today to continue.

I think I should delete a few posts above to save future confusion. With the new u-boot, I can enter the env's stated without issue and the only command that does not exist in u-boot now is 'pimux'

The physical NIC ports on the rear are labled 1 and 2 but actually, its 2 that appears to be the 0 interface and it does come up with the cable connected to it.

Sorry I had a typo, it should be pinmux status -a.

Add this env:

setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=orion_nand:0x100000@0x0(u-boot),0x0500000@0x100000(uImage),-(rootfs)"

Adjust this env

setenv usb_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts earlyprintk=serial'

And boot, this time we only need to see in Debian:

dmesg
cat /proc/mtd

:-) thanks bodhi

There is disks now installed to all slots but no partitions on them.

I'll reboot shortly and get the pinmux command but I dont see it in the list of available commands via 'help'

OK, we need a real partition to check. But also do this to see if the HDD is spun up.

sata init
sata info

OK. Look like I need to reconfigure it.

sata init, part and info do not return anything.

They are currently GPT, with a single ext4 primary partition on each.

OK, more to configure, then.

In the mean time, since you have booted stock u-boot to the new USB Debian rootfs, you can use that same USB rootfs with this new u-boot.

But the envs will be a bit different.

setenv set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts'

CodeJACK,

Failed to load '/boot/uImage.orig'

So when you installed 5.18.6-kirkwood-tld-1, you did not save the uImage.orig as instructed.

4b. Boot with DTB file embedded in the kernel image.Again, this step 4b is for stock U-Boot only.

mv uImage uImage.orig

Boot with stock u-boot into Debian and
cd /boot
ls -lart
I expect you would not find the uImage.orig.

Now just create it for the current kernel, so we can boot with the new u-boot (no DTB appended)

mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-5.19.2-kirkwood-tld-1 -d vmlinuz-5.19.2-kirkwood-tld-1 uImage.orig

Ah, sorry, I should have noticed file name. I had moved it to a backup directory but I re-created anyway using:
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n linux-5.18.6-kirkwood-tld-1.patch -d vmlinuz-5.18.6-kirkwood-tld-1 uImage.orig

Booted and working:
=> setenv set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts'
=> setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage.orig'
=> setenv load_uinitrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd'
=> setenv load_dtb 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x2c00000 /boot/dts/kirkwood-iomega_ix4_200d.dtb'
=> setenv usb_boot 'usb reset; run set_bootargs; run load_uimage; run load_uinitrd; run load_dtb; bootm 0x800000 0x1100000 0x2c00000'
