Good catch, I hadnt noticed that only 2 of the 4 disks are being detected.

I ran parted and can only see two but then this popped up in the console:

Here is the new test version. This has substantial change, so cross your finger :)

uboot.2022.10-rc3-tld-0.2.ix4_200d.mtd0.kwb.

Try kwboot and

sata init
sata info
sata part

Still only two disks but again, booting fine with new u-boot:

=> setenv set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts'
=> setenv load_uimage 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage.orig'
=> setenv load_uinitrd 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x1100000 /boot/uInitrd'
=> setenv load_dtb 'ext2load usb 0:1 0x2c00000 /boot/dts/kirkwood-iomega_ix4_200d.dtb'
=> setenv usb_boot 'usb reset; run set_bootargs; run load_uimage; run load_uinitrd; run load_dtb; bootm 0x800000 0x1100000 0x2c00000'
=> run usb_boot

What about these output?

sata init
sata info
sata part

And please post the entire serial log (during uboot booting).

Same as before, nothing:

=> sata init
=> sata info
=> sata part

no sata partition table available
=>

There is two separate controllers in this thing, correct?

Stock u-boot where the two separate controllers load the disks at different times:

Re: Iomega ix4-200d U-boot needed

Correct! there are 2 different controllers. I would exepct to see PCI bus handling 2 ports, and internal SATA handling 2 ports.

Ah!
SCSI: AHCI 0001.0000 32 slots 3 ports 3 Gbps 0x7 impl IDE mode

So I recall that you did "scsi reset" in stock u-boot to see the HDDs?

Correct but there is no scsi command in the new u-boot
Re: Iomega ix4-200d U-boot needed
August 24, 2022 08:10PM
Do you have all 4 HDDS in the slots? These 2 are internal SATA ports. So I would exepect the "sata init" would find them. If these 2 ports have HDD attached then the u-boot failed to power them up.

The behavior is a bit different

=> sata init
Err: Failed to identify SATA device 0
Err: Failed to identify SATA device 1

I've been trying to take shortcut but it seems I've missed some code.

Let me explain what we did. We dumped those registers in stock u-boot, and then use those values to force populate the registers in new u-boot. But it seems that did not help. So I will have to go back to do it the old and proven method, but will take a bit of tedious work. If I can, I will build verrsion 0.4 for tomorrow test.

============

I think you have enough to run USB kernel, and HDD rootfs, with stock u-boot. It's not the best set up, but it will allow you to proceed with OMV on HDD. Once the new u-boot is working for SATA, it will be just a couple changes in u-boot envs to boot straight into HDD rootfs.

Great, thanks a lot bodhi.

The disks do seem slow to initialize. The controllers themselves are max 3Gbps so each disk gets 1.5. This is going to be slow with 4 x 6Tb disks but I'm not looking for speed.

Catch you later! Enjoy your weekend

Yes. The old Kirkwood boxes controllers are slow. But gaining a few seconds is not that big a deal. Hopefully the new version will already power up the HDDs by the time you do "sata init" to spin it up.

Attached here is version tld-0.4.

This time, kwboot it. And then dump the registers again

md.l 0xF1010000 8
md.l 0xF1010100 1
md.l 0xF1010140 1
And

sata init
sata info
sata part

If the above does not work then you will have to repeat the pokes to make it work.

mw.l 0xF1010100 0x1000d080
mw.l 0xf1010140  0x0001000c
sleep 5

==========

And then try SCSI

scsi reset
scsi info
scsi part

And please post the log (verbatim from the u-boot banner, don't excerpt).

If at least 2 SATA drives were initialized, boot into Debian USB rootfs. See if kernel behavior is different or not regarding the 4 HDDs.

The other 2 drives might be still undetected. There is a different controller, which most likely used for PCIe bus to connect these 2 drives.

There was a mistake in my code.

Stock

Marvell>> md.l 0xF1010100 1
f1010100: 1000d080    ....

Marvell>> md.l 0xF1010140 1
f1010140: 0001000c    ....

New

=> md.l 0xF1010100 1
f1010100: 1000c080                             ....

=> md.l 0xF1010140 1
f1010140: 0001000c                             ....

Will upload tld-0.6
