Yes. Run nc at the server 192.168.1.2:

nc -lup 6666 192.168.1.10 6666

And we should see the kernel being loaded, and then starts.

It's no use. There is no t5325 in my local network anywhere.
nc -lup 6666 192.168.1.10 6666
Does nothing. Well, I'll wait for my programmer to arrive and then see what the problem is.
Thank you for your help so far.

Normally, netconsole will run very briefly. You have to start nc first, and then power up the box. That way you can catch it during booting. If you miss this window, it will not accept connection.

Once u-boot loaded the kernel, the network connection will be shutdown. Until the system is running fully there is no network connection, ie. no IP.

That's how I was trying to catch netconsole output but to no avail.

Which system and which nc binary are you using? if it is Ubuntu, then there is an additional step needed: install netcat-traditional.

At terminal

nc

That might be a problem.

I need to find 4pin micro jst connector.

PM me your address if in the U.S. and I will be happy to send you one or two.
Otherwise not sure how long it would take to get to you let me know.

Thank you for your offer but I'm in Serbia.
I can order it from China but it would take a month to arrive so I'll try to source it locally.
Bummer!

ok, let me know if you change your mind. I just don't know about customs and such. I have read that even sending simple stuff to Canada from the U.S. can cost some ridiculous tariffs. When I was looking for some I was told hobby stores like rc cars and boats may have cables. My local hobby stores were pretty small and didn't carry them in stock though.

kalehrl,

Try using 3 female-male jumper wires if you can find ones that small.

I got the cable but I'm able to read serial console.
The CP2102 USB TTL I got is recognised my my Debian Stretch as:

kern log sees it as a webcam!!

There is no /dev/ttyUSB0 or any other /dev/ttyUSB
I tried booting it using /dev/tty0 which is present, but no luck.

EDIT:
I managed to read the serial console on my Windows PC and it seems to work fine:

It seems either it doesn't get an ip address from the router:

kalehrl,

Everything looks OK except etherrnet.

Try unplug the cable and plug it back in. When you do this, dmesg should show the disconnected and connected status. After that, see if it will get dynamic IP.

No, it doesn't seem to get an ip address after unplugging/replugging ethernet cable:

There is no eth0 ip address.
When I set static ip address, after reboot ethernet doesn't work.
Only when I unplug/replug the cable it starts working.

That's good. Please use static IP for now, unplug/replug the cable to get it working. I'll look into this problem.

kalehrl,

Thanks for reporting this problem. I was able to repeat a similar scenario to your finding!

Indeed, with a static IP the negotiation seems to be wrong, I got the initial 1Gbs link from the driver, which is wrong (you can't use SSH with this wrong speed). After unplug and replug the cable, the speed renegotiated to the correct 100Mbs, and logging with SSH is OK.

I'll have to take a closer look to see why the link speed was wrong initially.

What about DHCP? The ethernet didn't work at all with the dynamic address even after replugging the cable?

There appears to be some type of issue with 4.12.x versions of the kernel on the HP t5325 as I've just updated mine an I can no longer get an IP with dhcp and setting the IP manually also doesn't result in a working link. One of the strange symptoms is no LEDs active on the port with a cable attached, but when removing the cable I get the green LED lit. For now I'm using a USB Ethernet as I'm to lazy to downgrade the kernel.

No need to use USB ethernet or downgrade kernel. Just use static IP, unplug/replug the cable. It works consistenly for me. This might be due to the updated Marvell ethernet driver that effect 100Mbps NIC.

Re: HP T5325 Thin Client U-Boot-2016.05-tld-1
September 21, 2017 01:04AM
This version of U-BOOT (uboot.2016.05-tld-1.t5325.mtd0.kwb) seems to be having a problem with networking.

I used kwboot on a HP T5325. If I type 'dhcp' at the U-BOOT prompt, I could see that the device was getting a DHCP IP address. If the device is then booted to Debian 8 or 9, DHCP was still working at the OS level.

However, if the device is flashed with the same version of U-BOOT with the env (uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.64K.img), "dhcp" command issued at the U-BOOT prompt failed to fetch a DHCP address. Once the device is booted to the OS (Debian 9), neither the OS could fetch a DHCP IP address.

As found in the instructions, I could not understand why Debian-4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 rootfs is needed to flash this version of U-BOOT. When ThinPro is running, only the two files (uboot.2016.05-tld-1.t5325.mtd0.kwb, uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.64K.img) are needed. So a USB without a special rootfs could be used for that purpose (or even transferred via network). So I didn't use the mentioned rootfs.

I appreciate if anyone could help me with the networking issue. It is strange that the same version of U-BOOT behaves differently when used with kwboot and flashed. I wonder if any env variable could get the device to work correctly.

You need to post the serial boot log and the envs list at serial console prompt, in both cases, so I can see what the problem was.

> networking issue. It is strange that the same

I don't think that it does, if you have done the installation correctly.

These are 2 scenarios that will cause it to behave differently (it depends on what is the u-boot envs in flash look like).

1. If you have flashed the new default envs image uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.64K.img . And made some changes specific to your box (e.g. ethaddr, ipaddr, serverip,...).

2. If you did not flash the default envs image.

So if you have flashed the default envs image uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.64K.img to SPI flash, then in both boots, with installed u-boot and kwboot, uboot.2016.05-tld-1 would behave exactly the same way.

In either case, the only way for me to determine if it was a real problem or it was a wrong installation is to look at the entire serial bootlog (from u-boot banner to Linux prompt).

Tried again but the results were the same. I did flash the default env image (uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.64K.img). This time, I used the Debian-4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 rootfs as well with the exact commands given in this tread - except that I didn't run the three commands given to enable netconsole. Even though I could set the envs via the U-BOOT prompt, I used Debian-4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 rootfs thinking that if ever the binaries in it could make a difference.

Here's the output if the device is flashed with uboot.2016.05-tld-1.t5325.mtd0.kwb:

So when the device is flashed, U-BOOT does not get a DHCP IP address. But the same U-BOOT image used with kwboot works as expected.

Even though I thought that envs could be set via the U-BOOT prompt after flashing the device with this version of U-BOOT, saving them fails. I guess that's why the steps in the first post of this thread uses /etc/fw_env.config and the binaries (fw_setenv) in the Debian-4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 rootfs.

Kamal,

Thanks for the details!

Indeed, it seems different. Let me take sometime to read the logs closely and post back. There might be something you or I have missed.

Re: HP T5325 Thin Client U-Boot-2016.05-tld-1

Kamal,

The first things that caught my attention:

- Your configuration is still default values. These need to be setup to be consistent with your network. You won't get a dynamic IP without setting up the network envs to conform to your network.

ipaddr=192.168.0.231
serverip=192.168.0.220

- To complete the setup for your network configuration, you need to set these envs. Assuming you want to use the default ipaddr and serverip, and your router is 192.168.0.1.

gatewayip=192.168.0.1
netmask=255.255.255.0
ipaddr=192.168.0.231
serverip=192.168.0.220

BTW, these are things to keep in mind:

1. there is no need to use dhcp in u-boot. You should use static IP (defined by ipaddr).
2. serverrip only meaningful when you use NFS, tftp, SNTP. And this is not where you will get the dynamic IP, you'll get it from the router (e.g. 192.168.0.1).
