Pogo V3 - No boot, no serial communication

Pogo V3 - No boot, no serial communication
February 27, 2017 10:06AM
1st time on this board with the following situation here.

It seems that I have a "dead" pogoplug V3 here. Tried to contact this with a JTAG/Serial connection, but no positive results. Reading this SATA Boot I now hope that I can make some progress. Links in that post are no longer working and therefore my SATA is not ready yet.
Planning to prepare a SATA SSD via a Linux computer but I'm lacking expert skills on bit level ;-)

My goal is to get this pogoplug up and running again and later see if I want to do more with it (most likely yes)..

Anyone any idea if my goals is feasible and how this is achieved.... Some help in initial steps is welcome.

Thnx in advance

Search the forum for shv posts. I recalled shv recently provided a good download link for this Sata booting download.

When you find it, please post the link here and I will confirm for you.

Re: Pogo V3 - No boot, no serial communication

I'm a major step forward (also in Time), but this log is currently the result. I'm trying to follow U-Boot installation, but I can't erase and flash as mentioned in this post.

Able to mount an USB Stick and of course boot via SATA (with some extra setenv commands). But I would like to get rid of the SATA and install U-boot.

Any ideas?

Re: Pogo V3 - No boot, no serial communication
August 24, 2017 06:40PM
myhobby,

Congrats for successfully unbricked your box!

The boot log showed that you are booting from SATA with kernel 3.12.13-oxnas-tld-5. But the u-boot build was not my build.

Now before I can give you advice. I need the following info.

1. `How did you prepare the SATA disk to boot? was that from shv tarball?

2. Did you keep a log of what you did? can you post it here.

3. Do you have another Linux box where you can mount this disk and list these information. Assuming it is mounted at /media/sdb1 (if there is one partition on the disk), or mounted at /media/sdb1 and /media/sdb2 (if there are 2 partitions on the disk).

mount
e2label /dev/sdb1
e2label /dev/sdb2
ls -lart /media/sdb1/boot
ls -lart /media/sdb2/boot

Note that it there were errors in the output above, I need to see those too. So copy and paste the whole thing.

Re: Pogo V3 - No boot, no serial communication

Let's see..

1. `How did you prepare the SATA disk to boot? was that from shv tarball?

I used this sticky until step 11.... (http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,32994), but it it can be that I overwrote the linux part with a different version. BTW creating a bootable disk via a Linux system was much harder than expected due to the technical level of documented help ;-) But I don't mind. (BTW why didn't someone create an harddisk image that can be downloaded and with tooling copied on an empty HDD (Win32DiskImager for Windows eg)

The reason for fiddeling around with versions is the fact that I don't want to loose my serial connection at any time, but I saw that the booted version is lower than what I "loaded" on the SATA drive. In other words, it seems that we have a mix of SATA and NAND boot ?

2. Did you keep a log of what you did? can you post it here.

In short, after creating a bootable disk, I saw that I was able to have a serial connection via putty. Again with additional info found here

OX820 # setenv dt_bootcmd_ide 'ide reset; run dt_ide_bootcmd; reset'
OX820 # setenv bootcmd 'run dt_bootcmd_ide'
OX820 # boot

I was able to boot into a linux environment, missing the required pogoplug toolbox to write & read nands. By using my HDD as a portable device between the linux computer and the pogoplug, I was able to execute steps like NAND backup (I think).

USB sticks are currently automatically detected and can be mounted manually to a mountingpoint.

3. Do you have another Linux box where you can mount this disk and list these information. Assuming it is mounted at /media/sdb1 (if there is one partition on the disk), or mounted at /media/sdb1 and /media/sdb2 (if there are 2 partitions on the disk)

I know for sure that I only have 1 partion manually created on the bootable SATA drive... /dev/sda1 normally mounted manually to /media/rootfs. e2label /dev/sda1 -> rootfs.

Mounted /dev/sda1 -> Media/rootfs. Result of ls -lart /media/rootfs/boot

Does this help ?

Yes. So now we know what you have in the SATA disk.

Where did you find this post? I could not. This was created by youxiaojie. I meant to put it in the Wiki, but forgot about it. And the fact that I could not find it in the u-boot subforum, I probably removed it by mistake (face palm). If I did, my appology to youxiaojie :)

Ok found it! It was weird, the timestamp is one day ahead of the original post time.

myhobby,

Power up, interrupt serial console and execute

setenv ide_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10'
boot

And if you want to boot with USB rootfs, you will need to install the new u-boot to NAND.

And that is the end of this boot-attemp ;-)

My main goal is to create a pogoplug with a modified OS (ssh access) so I can use the original pogoplug functionality and additional extras

How-to (with U-boot) is not clear to me yet ;-)
Re: Pogo V3 - No boot, no serial communication

There is a typo in this command:

setenv ide_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL =rootfs rootdelay=10'

Should be

setenv ide_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10'

Re: Pogo V3 - No boot, no serial communication
September 05, 2017 11:31AM
I don't quite remember what shv did. It seems you have only 1 partition on your HDD.

Please try again:

setenv dt_bootcmd_ide 'ide reset; ide part; run dt_ide_bootcmd; reset'
setenv ide_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs root=/dev/sda1 rootfstype=ext3 console=ttyS0,115200 mem=128M earlyprintk=serial'
printenv
boot

If it still not booting, mount this HDD on another Linux box and get the output of (assuming it was mounted at /media/sdb1):

fdisk -l
e2label /dev/sdb1
ls -l /media/sdb1
ls - /media/sdb1/boot

myhobby,

Please use these commands to list the files (I need to see the file attributes and sort it by time):
ls -lart /media/rootfs
ls -lart /media/rootfs/boot

myhobby,

No, it did not help :) the date and time were not good. They don't reflect the time when the files were created, and in which order.

Try this.

Power up, interrupt serial console, and

setenv dt_sata_boot 'ext2load ide 0:1 $uimage_addr /boot/uImage_2.6.31.14_OX820_1.2_shv.Pro; ext2load ide 0:1 $uinitrd_addr /boot/uInitrd; bootm $uimage_addr $uinitrd_addr'
setenv dt_bootcmd_ide 'ide reset; ide part; run dt_ide_bootcmd; reset'
setenv ide_set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs root=LABEL=rootfs console=ttyS0,115200 mem=128M earlyprintk=serial'
printenv
boot

Re: Pogo V3 - No boot, no serial communication

myhobby,

It seems shv built the kernel in this rootfs without initrd. That's what the error meant.

Let's not dwell on this HDD rootfs (eventually you want to replace it anyway because it is quite old).

Create the new rootfs on USB using Debian-4.4.54-oxnas-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2. And then I'll help you boot that latest stretch rootfs.

Updated 02 Aug 2017:

Rootfs Debian-4.4.54-oxnas-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 was uploaded.

Basic Debian stretch Oxnas rootfs for Popo Pro/Classic V3 plug:

- tarball size: 180M
- install size: 477M
- Installed packages: nano, avahi, ntp, busybox-syslogd (log to RAM), htop, dialog, bz2, iperf, ethtool, sysvinit-core, sysvinit, sysvinit-utils, mtd-utils.
- see LED controls in /etc/rc.local, and /etc/rc0.d/K08halt
- see some useful aliases in /root/.profile
- root password: root

Note: you must skip step 4 (Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with stock u-boot).

Re: Pogo V3 - No boot, no serial communication

I realize that I booted in Debian. My goal is to finalize this project by updating in such that:
- I can close everything in the original case (so it is safe again)
- Keep the serial connection for future recoveries
- Automatic booting &:
- No need for any bootable SATA harddisk
- No need for a USB stick
- Regular Pogoplug services running
- SSH root access to install additional software and to update the boot software in case this is usefull

Is this possible and if so, what are the next steps ?

myhobby,

> I realize that I booted in Debian.

But it did not boot into your USB rootfs. It booted into the kernel on your HDD! So you're not done, if that's what you meant to do as I suggested.

It is simply not possible to do what you wanted to do above. Pogoplug services do not work as free anymore.

But if you like to run this box without SATA or USB, then you need to restore the stock FW in NAND (everything). And then boot into stock, enable SHH. And then use stock OS. The NAND space is simply too small to run the latest Debian rootfs.

However, if you run stock OS, I will not be interested in helping you :) I have provided a complete solution to run new u-boot and Debian for this box on USB or SATA:

Ok,

Am I still able to run the pogoplug service with your u-boot and Debian for this box ?

myhobby,

No, it will not be possible out of the box, without some more non-trivial setup.

I recall moonman at Arch site has this procedure working, and that procedure can be used on Debian too.

To summarize this all. I installed U-boot on my device and now it is a working debian box booting from USB.

Tip for everyone in case you are working in different environments (Windows/Linux/OSx)

wget --no-check-certificate https://file.io/<your uploaded file> can save you an enormous amount of free time ;-)

Something I will never forget.

@bodhi: Thank you very much for helping. That was my reason to transform my pogo to U-boot. Pure respect ! ;-)

Cool :) glad you got it working to your expectation!
