Problem installing Netgear Stora

Problem installing Netgear Stora
March 18, 2017 03:30AM
Hi Bodhi,

I have started with the instructions of installing new uboot.
- First i did unpack the env-tools - did look if kernel did support it
Did see this:
Updated 05 Sept 2015:

Kernel linux-4.2.0-kirkwood-tld-1 package has been uploaded. The following features were updated/added:

1. Incorprate patched nsa3xx-hwmon module for NSA320 and NSA310 (some variant of). This patch allows these boxes to use the nsa3xx-hwmon like before (Device Tree transition in kernel 3.17 has broken this module). It also streams line the way NSA3xx hwmon is implemented in the kernel.
2. New Marvell CESA crypto driver is activated in this kernel.
3. Netgear Stora DTS was modified to correct NAND chip deday and enable write access to mtd0 (u-boot and u-boot envs).

So i think fw_tools are supported with kernel 4.4.0 and higher.
Question: Does kernel 4.4.0 support envir-tools?

I ask this question becaus i get:

root@debian:~# fw_printenv ethaddr
[ 314.738491] __nand_correct_data: uncorrectable ECC error
...
[ 317.216841] __nand_correct_data: uncorrectable ECC error
Warning: Bad CRC, using default environment
## Error: "ethaddr" not defined
root@debian:~#

And i don know if its important; the name of mtd0 is not u-boot, but orion_nand:
root@debian:~# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 10000000 00020000 "orion_nand"

Yes it does.

If you are not sure how to get through some error while instalingl u-boot, post the the entire log of what you did, and I will point out where the error is.

Hi Bodhi,

In the topic i added the putty.log, in which the commands and output is saved.

The only thing before i did, was:
download linux-tools-installation-bodhi.tar.gz
sha256sum

in /root:

tar xzvf linux-tools-installation-bodhi.tar.gz
cd tools
ln -s fw_printenv fw_setenv
cp -a fw_env.config /etc/

and cp -a the rest to /usr/sbin
cp -a busybox /usr/sbin
cp -a e2fsck /usr/sbin
cp -a nanddump /usr/sbin
cp -a fw_printenv /usr/sbin
cp -a flash_erase /usr/sbin
cp -a nandwrite /usr/sbin

thats all.

Then i started following this manual: 2016.05 U-Boot Kirkwood - GoFlexNet, GoFlexHome, PogoE02, Dockstar, iConnect, NetgearStora, PogoV4/Mobile, Sheevaplug, NSA325, NSA320, NSA310S, NSA320S, NSA310, HP T5325

here are the steps i did with the output (in the putty logfile on the previous post is the compleet output from startup)

root@debian:~# cat /etc/fw_env.config
# Configuration file for fw_(printenv/saveenv) utility.
# Up to two entries are valid, in this case the redundant
# environment sector is assumed present.
# Notice, that the "Number of sectors" is ignored on NOR.

# MTD device name	Device offset	Env. size	Flash sector size	Number of sectors
/dev/mtd0 0xc0000 0x20000 0x20000
root@debian:~# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 10000000 00020000 "orion_nand"

Re: Problem installing Netgear Stora
March 18, 2017 04:38AM
Hi Bodhi,

Maybe important, i did some time ago a resetenv.
Because of this i had to startup and load the flashware.img file.
I did follow this topic: http://www.openstora.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=412&sid=0ec63b563241250366be7c45ed063b61&start=15

1. Apparently u-boot try to load the file "flashware.img" from a usb-stick very early in the booting procedure. I downloaded this file http://www.openstora.com/files/displayimage.php?pid=50, which is a working u-boot partition, uncompressed it, renamed "u-boot.mtd0" to "flashware.img", and loaded it onto a clean usb-stick formatted with ext2.

2. With the usb-stick in the Stora and working serial connection, I started the Stora. It boots as usual but somewhere in the middle you should see something like:

Code: Select all
USB: scanning bus for devices... 2 USB Device(s) found
scanning bus for storage devices... 1 Storage Device(s) found
Trying to load image from USB flash drive using FAT FS
    reading /flashware.img

    ** Unable to read "/flashware.img" from usb 0:1 **
Trying to load image from USB flash drive using ext2 FS partition 0
    Failed to mount ext2 filesystem...
    ** Bad ext2 partition or disk - usb 0:0 **
Trying to load image from USB flash drive using ext2 FS partition 1
    .
    .........................
    .........................
    .........................
    ........................

    1048576 bytes read

I.e. it found the usb and have loaded "flashware.img" to memory (address 0x0). Ok, so we have a working u-boot image loaded into memory so the hard part is done. The boot sequence continues as usual (thus ignores the loaded image) and one comes to:

Code: Select all
    ## Booting image at 00800000 ...
    Bad Magic Number
    Marvell>>

3. First we need to check that the image is loaded correctly. Run "crc32 0x0 0x100000" (this assumes that you use the exact file above, "0x100000" should be changed according to the real filesize). You should see:

Code: Select all
    Marvell>> crc32 0x0 0x100000
    CRC32 for 00000000 ... 000fffff ==> ec37629d

"ec37629d" is what I got, you should check this by running CRC32 on your desktop on the downloaded file ("crc32 u-boot.mtd0"). If the checksums do not match, DO NOT continue!

4. Now lets load the image to the NAND. We would like to minimize the risk of bricking the Stora for real so we will only load the bare minimum needed. Apparently the only problem is that the enviroment variables are all messed up, the u-boot code are all fine. So we will only take the enviroment variables from the image loaded in memory. The enviroment variables starts at 0xA0000. I don't know how big the variable-part is, but it should be in the end of the code so we'll take everything to the end of the image (total size is 0x100000, we start at 0xA0000 => size to load is 0x60000).

First run "nand erase 0xA0000 0x60000" and then "nand write 0xA0000 0xA0000 0x60000". You should see:

Code: Select all
    Marvell>> nand erase 0xA0000 0x60000

NAND erase: device 0 offset 0xa0000, size 0x60000
    Erasing at 0xe0000 -- 100% complete.
    OK
    Marvell>> nand write 0xA0000 0xA0000 0x60000

NAND write: device 0 offset 0xa0000, size 0x60000
     393216 bytes written: OK

Now everything should be ok, so we run "reset" and the Stora should boot up fully functional! Don't forget to change "ethaddr" to something else.

A few days ago, i had to flash it again, because i did get crc errors - i think from repeatly unpower after bad boot.
I added the file.

Hi Bodhi,

I found:
http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,29259,29285,quote=1

And this, looking at the original boot:
...
Using static partition definition
Creating 3 MTD partitions on "nand_mtd":
0x00000000-0x00100000 : "u-boot"
0x00100000-0x00700000 : "uImage"
0x00700000-0x10000000 : "root"
..

And did this:

setenv console 'console=ttyS0,115200 mtdparts=orion_nand:0x100000@0(uboot),0xff00000@0x100000(root)'
saveenv

Output:
root@debian:~# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 00100000 00020000 "uboot"
mtd1: 0ff00000 00020000 "root"

with original firmware:
-bash-3.2# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 00100000 00020000 "u-boot"
mtd1: 00600000 00020000 "uImage"
mtd2: 0f900000 00020000 "root"
-bash-3.2#

I still have that error:

Re: Problem installing Netgear Stora

Hi Bodhi,

Can i install safely U-boot with above error.
Do i have to change device-offset in /etc/fw_env.config?

Marvell>>
Marvell>> printenv console
console=console=ttyS0,115200 mtdparts=orion_nand:0x100000@0(uboot),0xff00000@0x100000(root)

root@debian:~# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 00100000 00020000 "uboot"
mtd1: 0ff00000 00020000 "root"

Sorry, for all the questions, but i don't want to make a mistake and break the box. Thanks again.
Erik

root@debian:~# cat /etc/fw_env.config

Re: Problem installing Netgear Stora

Hi Bodhi,

Found this:
Partition table

Other interesting issue related to the use of MTD devices is that there is no partition table, the layout of the disk (MTD memory I mean), is passed to kernel as parameters (PLEASE McWire explain where you pass it).

The original Stora have three partitions:

    -Original-U-BOOT (1Mb)
    -Original-Kernel (6Mb)
    -Original-ROOTFS (249Mb)

# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 00100000 00020000 "u-boot"
mtd1: 00600000 00020000 "uImage"
mtd2: 0f900000 00020000 "root"

on: http://www.openstora.com/wiki/index.php?title=How_to_install_your_custom_firmware

I tryed this console command:
Marvell>> setenv console 'console=ttyS0,115200 mtdparts=orion_nand:0x100000@0(uboot),0x600000@0x100000(uImage),0xf900000@0x100000(root)'

Booting in debian i get than:
root@debian:~# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 00100000 00020000 "uboot"
mtd1: 00600000 00020000 "uImage"
mtd2: 0f900000 00020000 "root"
root@debian:~# cat /proc/cmdline
console=ttyS0,115200 mtdparts=orion_nand:0x100000@0(uboot),0x600000@0x100000(uImage),0xf900000@0x100000(root) root=LABEL=rootfs rootfstype=ext2 rootdelay=10

But with fw_printenv ethaddr i get:
root@debian:~# fw_printenv ethaddr
[ 145.116718] __nand_correct_data: uncorrectable ECC error
[ 145.122103] __nand_correct_data: uncorrectable ECC error
...
[ 147.595031] __nand_correct_data: uncorrectable ECC error
Warning: Bad CRC, using default environment
## Error: "ethaddr" not defined

When i change /etc/fw_env.config
  GNU nano 2.2.6 File: /etc/fw_env.config

# Configuration file for fw_(printenv/saveenv) utility.
# Up to two entries are valid, in this case the redundant
# environment sector is assumed present.
# Notice, that the "Number of sectors" is ignored on NOR.

# MTD device name Device offset Env. size Flash sector size $
#/dev/mtd0 0xc0000 0x20000 0x20000
/dev/mtd0 0x100000 0x20000 0x20000

And do now a fw_printenv ethaddr
root@debian:~# fw_printenv ethaddr
Cannot read bad block mark: Invalid argument

Is above good.
Please help

Erik

Re: Problem installing Netgear Stora

Erik,

It looks OK. mtd0 is where it is important. As long as it is correct then you can install u-boot. These NAND ECC errors are shown in some boxes before installating u-boot (old u-boot wrote the envs differently, and you are using newer fw_printenv from the rootfs).

Your bad blocks are OK (in different region away from mtd0):

Your mtd0 looks OK:
root@debian:~# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 00100000 00020000 "uboot"

However, what you should do is: to boot with kwboot before installiing u-boot. As I mentioned in the uboot thread:

Quote

Important Note: If possible, try to test this boot image with UART booting before flashing to NAND. See davygravy's UART booting using kwboot instruction here in this thread. The latest u-boot image released here should be used for UART booting, if your box is the type that supports it (these do not: Dockstar, Pogo E02, iConnect).

If you can use the new u-boot image to boot with kwboot, then the box is unbrickable!

But even if you can't run kwboot to boot this box, it's OK to go ahead and install it.

Re: Problem installing Netgear Stora

Erik,

If you are extra careful, you should adjust the mtdparts in bootargs so that it looks like this in Debian:

# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 00100000 00020000 "u-boot"
mtd1: 00400000 00020000 "uImage"
mtd2: 02000000 00020000 "rootfs"
mtd3: 0db00000 00020000 "data"

Note that this definition will not allow you to run stock FW.

Hi Bodhi,

I have tested on my box version. It is 1.11, so kwboot can not be used. (My box is breakable, so i m extra careful)
Before i start i have one question about the /etc/fw_env.config file;
has the offset to be 0xc0000 --> __nand_correct_data: uncorrectable ECC error
has the offset to be 0x100000 --> Cannot read bad block mark: Invalid argument

Thanks
Erik
Re: Problem installing Netgear Stora
March 18, 2017 03:03PM
Erik,

It should be set to 0xc0000. As stated in the instruction.

has the offset to be 0xc0000 --> __nand_correct_data: uncorrectable ECC error

This error is expected, you can't access this location until after you install new u-boot. Stock u-boot defined envs at a different location.

Hi Bodhi,

I have installed the new U-boot.
Box is booting into U-boot - happy that, that works, pfff.

I have copyed all environment-parameters into the new uboot, but i think a lot of them can be skipped and deleted.
I want to have the possibility to boot into old Firmware-redhat-linux and to usb.
Both do not boot.
This are mine uboot-enviroment settings:

I'm using the 4.4.0 filesystem with kernel.
I have done the (because of the new uboot):
mv uImage --> uImage.netgear
mv uImage.orig uImage

Can you help me?
Thanks

Erik,

Glad that you have the new u-boot installed!

Netconsole does not output more than what you saw. It always stops at
Starting kernel ...
There is no output after this. Unless you set it up further in Debian.

So try to find the Stora in the network. Are you using DHCP (the 4.4 rootfs default settings for ethernet)?
- ping debian.local
- look for a new IP appear in the router or use scanning app to find such IP.

Hi Bodhi,

I have also an serial cable (putty on com1) also stops at Starting kernel ...
-1- Should i not get info using serial console, or do i have to set envir parameters for that (stdin/stdout/stderr -- otherwords disable nc?)
-2- I looked at my router. It gives a green v when a ip adress is used. I could not find a not known ip-address. Tryed all the ip-addresses but get not an answer back. I will set a fixed ip-address tomorrow.
-3- Did also the ping
debian.local, ---> ping: unknown host debian.local
debian.priv ---> ping: unknown host debian.priv
debian.lan --> ping: unknown host debian.lan

I think it is not booting at all - i think i have to change something.
Any ideas?

Erik

Erik,

If you have serial console then don't use nc. Connect serial console and power up.

Interrupt netconsole and

setenv preboot
saveenv
reset
Let it boot.

Netgear Stora>

I have changed /etc/network/interfaces, to a static ip.
But i can not connect to the ip-adress with putty.
Ping gives: Request timed out.

So i think box is not starting.
(If it was i expetcted a bootlog [......] starting ok, which did not show up !)

Hi Bodhi,

If i do:
run scan_disk
setenv bootargs 'rootfstype=ext2 rootdelay=10 root=LABEL=rootfs $(console)'
run bootcmd_exec

then the box starts
I can change the rootdelay in the command from: 10 to $(usb_rootdelay) or to $usb_rootdelay,
than the box starts. Any other change and the box hangs. (Uncompressing Linux... done, booting the kernel. -- and nothing). I have re-entered the values with single and double quotes - no difference.

Here the output when i start with real values...

Thanks

Hi Bodhi,

if i do a
run scan_disk
run set_bootargs and
run bootcmd_exec

than usb is starting correctly.

FW is not starting. There is a line in console about mtdparts, is this enough?
I tryed run bootcmd....

Great! meaning you've resolve the problem with the envs.

>

To boot back to stock FW in NAND, further set up is needed.

>There is a line in console abo
> ut mtdparts, is this enough?

The mtdparts should be whatever you had in stock envs before.

mtdparts=orion_nand: 0x100000@0(uboot),0xff00000@0x100000(root)
But the above was not stock u-boot definition, it must have been modified already. Can you find what was mtdparts in stock u-boot?

The only thing i see is this:
Creating 3 MTD partitions on "nand_mtd":
0x00000000-0x00100000 : "u-boot"
0x00100000-0x00700000 : "uImage"
0x00700000-0x10000000 : "root"

So: uboot starts at 0 is 1M in size, uImage, starts at 1M and is 6M in size, Root starts at 7M and is 249M in size.
If i use 0-1M for uboot and rest as root, than are the borders the same. Should work, Why does it not.

I can try without anything, maybe that helps...

Greetings

Yes. Your calculation is correct. It should work.

Re: Problem installing Netgear Stora

Hi Bodhi,

I tryed to get old firmware started, with different mdtparts, without, different configs, with and without old uboot params, but after decompressing it is not working. There are plenty of errors where the booting can stop and because i don't know the errors - nothing is reported to the console - the changes are slim to get it started.

So i want to replace existing md1/md2 partitions and fill this with a working version of linux.
So i'm currious if there is a build kernel and filesystem for in the nand. Do you know and were to find Howto.

Can i use the rescue system for this and is het tested on netgear stora

Thanks verry much for the info

I would suggest that you back up all the mtds. In case you want to try to go back to stock later to use it as rescue system, or if you want to sell the box.

Is your purpose just a rescue system (to fall back in case the rootfs is corrupted and box will boot into that system).

The rescue system from Jeff/davygravy has not been tested on the Stora. I would have to refresh my memory about the Stora to say if it might work or not :)

Hi Bodhi,

I think thats a great idea to backup first the mtd's.
So i did follow your advise.
root@debian:~# nanddump --noecc --omitoob -l 0x80000 -f mtd0 /dev/mtd0
Block size 131072, page size 2048, OOB size 64
Dumping data starting at 0x00000000 and ending at 0x00080000...

root@debian:~# nanddump --noecc --omitoob -s 0x100000 -l 0x600000 -f mtd1 /dev/mtd1
Block size 131072, page size 2048, OOB size 64
Dumping data starting at 0x00100000 and ending at 0x00600000...

>> He, the length should be 0x0600000 and not the ending
>> Then i make the length address the ending address

root@debian:~# nanddump --noecc --omitoob -s 0x0100000 -l 0x0700000 -f mtd1 /dev/mtd1
Block size 131072, page size 2048, OOB size 64
Dumping data starting at 0x00100000 and ending at 0x00600000...

>>The same.
But maybe this is not a problem the bootimage is only 2.7Mb

root@debian:~# nanddump --noecc --omitoob -s 0x700000 -l 0xf900000 -f mtd2 /dev/mtd2
Block size 131072, page size 2048, OOB size 64
Dumping data starting at 0x00700000 and ending at 0x0f900000...

Also with mtd2...
>> He, the end should be 10000000

 nanddump --noecc --omitoob -s 0x700000 -l 0x10000000 -f mtd2 /dev/mtd2
Block size 131072, page size 2048, OOB size 64
Dumping data starting at 0x00700000 and ending at 0x0f900000...

He??
But also here; mine rootfs has a size of 212Mb and USed is 168Mb, Avail is 44M. So also here this looks OK.

I gues this is because, the ubifs is not completely filled, so dump stops(?) (reading only FF or ), when nandwrite sees un-used blocks i think.
I don't know if this is causing problems - when restoring mtd's , for other people, so i just want to tell it. - i have not tested if the mtd-dumps are working !

Erik

Dont use the length when dumpnign the entire mtd. So use this format for each mtd

nanddump --noecc --omitoob -f mtd0 /dev/mtd0

Bodhi,

Thanks !!!
Your quite right.
After -not using the -l -argument i get, when copying:
mtd0-stora1 100% 1024KB 1.0MB/s 00:00
mtd0-stora2 100% 1024KB 1.0MB/s 00:00
mtd1-stora1 100% 6144KB 3.0MB/s 00:02
mtd1-stora2 100% 6144KB 3.0MB/s 00:02
mtd2-stora1 100% 248MB 4.0MB/s 01:02
mtd2-stora2 100% 248MB 4.1MB/s 01:01

-rwxrwxrwx 1 apache users 1.0M Mar 28 18:54 mtd0-stora1
-rwxrwxrwx 1 apache users 1.0M Mar 28 19:10 mtd0-stora2
-rwxrwxrwx 1 apache users 6.0M Mar 28 18:54 mtd1-stora1
-rwxrwxrwx 1 apache users 6.0M Mar 28 19:10 mtd1-stora2

So thanks again.

Hi Bodhi,

I want to try to put a new kernel in filesystem in mtd
I have mtd1 for uImage and mtd2 for filesystem
So i can do 2 things
1- make a new filesystem mtd1 for the total size of 249+6Mb and put a filesystem in with uImage and uInit and dtsfile. But than i have to load the files from the ubifs filesystem. I have to mount the ubifs rootfs and than load the 3 files. Do you have any experience with this. I'm trying this but i get:
>> ubifsload ubi0:rootfs 0x800000 /boot/uImage >>> mount filesystem first
>> mtdparts
>> ubi part rootfs
>> mount ubi0:rootfs >>> does not do the job.

2 - make on file containing uImage, UInitrd and dts-file in mtd1 and do a nand read.e
Do you know how to make 1 file of this 3 files?

Thanks

Erik

Hi Erik,

I usually like to discourage people to put the kernel files and rootfs in NAND, because it's really uneccessary. And rootfs in NAND is not useful, due to limited NAND space, and lack of security upgrade. You are not going to run security updates too often if the rootfs is in NAND (wear it out really fast).

With that said, everyone has own needs :) So here how you can put all these kernel files in one image using mkimage with a multi-image option.

mkimage -T multi .......

And use man mkimage command to see explanation further.
