When you said "flash the new kernel", extactly what did you do?
After creating the rootfs using the tarball Debian-3.17.0-oxnas-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2, there is no need to install any newer kernel. Kernel 3.17.0-oxnas-tld-1 will work just fine.
