USB0: USB EHCI 1.00
scanning bus 0 for devices... 4 USB Device(s) found
       scanning usb for storage devices...

(initramfs)
I don't know what to make of it.

Notice the ** File not found /boot/uImage ** message from netconsole. I can't say for sure that it has anything to do with the U-Boot update since my Dockstar was having the occasional booting problem for a while now. The boot device should be a flash drive on usb 0:1, not usb 1:1 as shown above. The usb 1:1 device is a 4TB ext4 formatted drive with no /boot directory and no rootfs label, so I can't understand why it's being picked up as the boot device.

At this point the only way to proceed is to push the reset button or unplug it, neither of which I can do remotely, so I'd really like to figure out what's going on so that I can reboot remotely and/or recover from a power outage.

JT,

This is a common boot behavior. When you have muliple USB drives, there is no guarantee that which drive will be spun up first. So sometime the USB flash drive is 0:1, the USB HDD is going to be 1:1. Other time, the opposite is true. USB flash drive is 1:1, the USB HDD is going to be 0:1.

However, that was perfectly OK. Since the kernel drive was detected correctly as 1:1 (by the envs). Since the USB flash is 1:1 this time.
Found bootable drive on usb 1:1
So the kernel booted OK.

Now your real problem.

[ 0.000000] Kernel command line: console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sdb1 rootdelay=10 rootfstype=ext3 mtdparts=orion_nand:1M(u-boot),4M(uImage),32M(rootfs),-(data) zswap.enabled=1 zswap.compressor=lz4

You did not update the default envs image using uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.img.

So your kernel bootarg for root device is wrong. If you had, then that root device should have been root=LABEL=rootfs.

To fix this problem without actually flashing the default envs image, set your bootargs to use root=LABEL=rootfs (instead of root=/dev/sdb1).

Now why was the HDD is sda1, and the flash drive is sdb1, or vice versa? again, the USB drive enumeration is unpredictable during Linux kernel booting. Whichever is "faster" will got assigned sda1, the "slower" will get assigned "sdb1". To fix that problem, I use root=LABEL=rootfs to tell the kernel where to find the rootfs to mount it. (default envs image set that bootargs root=LABEL=rootfs). So the drives enumeration order is no longer important, it always works with the label rootfs.

Dang! I knew I was doing something stupid. You'd think I'd know how to follow instructions. I could have sworn I updated my environment variables some time ago, but I'm probably thinking of my setup of a few non-Dockstars I did in the last year or two. I'll go back and read the U-Boot thread more carefully.

Thanks, bodhi!
