Question about 2017.07 U-Boot Kirkwood for Dockstar

I have a dockstar and had an older version of your uboot - I assume from 2011.
I installed this version.
All steps worked including the writing of the environment except setting ethaddr
root@nas:~/tmp# fw_setenv ethaddr '00:10:75:1A:DD:17'
Can't overwrite "ethaddr"
What can I do?
Is it possible to set it with the /boot/uEnv.txt?

Don't worry about ethaddr if you cannot set it. Later, after you boot back to Debian, you can set it there.

The new u-boot set a default ethaddr (a local MAC). So it will be OK for booting temporarily until you set it to the real one.

reboot worked, but i get same error when setting ethaddr after booting into debian.
I also tried with /boot/uEnv.txt. No effect.
Then with update to newest kernel:
root@nas:~# uname -a
Linux nas 4.14.1-kirkwood-tld-1 #1 PREEMPT Wed Nov 22 23:38:14 PST 2017 armv5tel GNU/Linux
root@nas:~# cat /boot/uEnv.txt 
ethaddr=00:10:75:1A:DD:17

Still the same problem:

Any tipps/ideas how to solve the problem?

And why is netcat stopping to log after booting the kernel? Last message is: 'Starting kernel ...'

netconsole will only output that much. Later you need to do more setup in Debian to see kernel messages.

For ethaddr problem, please post output of these commands here (in code tags, don't attach files).

I unpacked the dts files, build uImage with the following commands (as described in Step 4) again and rebooted.
Same problem.
Should I build it without dts file? It was unclear how, because when I skip step 4 I have no uImage file.
Or do I simply have to skip the cat dts/... command?

This indicated that you have not installed the kernel 4.14.1 correctly. If you did, the uImage file should have been created. Redo the installation.

I'm using the GoFlex Net booting with USB drive as an example here. Please replace its name (kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb) with the box you are installing on (for example, kirkwood-pogo_e02.dtb). Please look inside /boot/dts/ for the correct DTB file name for your box.

Below are the 2 different alternatives in booting (method 4b is required for booting with older U-Boot that does not support FDT).

- Choose option 4a if you are going to use the current rootfs for many different Kirkwood boxes, as is. It should boot most of the Kirkwood boxes. And with the latest U-Boot for Kirkwood that suports FDT. This is the preferred method.

- Choose option 4b if you only use the current rootfs for the box you're installing on, and don't want to modify u-boot envs. This method is required for booting with older U-Boot that does not support FDT. Note that if you are installing from stock OS, u-boot envs must be modified to boot with USB or HDD (please post questions, since each box has a different flavor in setting up the envs).

4a. Boot with DTB file (standard way to boot FDT kernel). Recommended.


- Generate the uImage and uInitrd.

Edit: I created uInitrd and uImage by 4a method without changing env parameters. I can boot, but still same problem.

You have used the wrong section for intstruction. The above is for the rootfs. The kernel installation is to be done after you have the rootfs running, and then upgrade the kernel on top of that:

No. As I said, your DTB is too old:

I worked through your description and did step by step again: unpacking, installing, unpacking dts, building uImage, uInitrd. Now it uses the currents dts, but still the error occurs.

Similar things happened to me before.
My solution: (use either one)

Use another usb boot disk with old kernel /file system to boot the system, then use fw_setenv

Or download bodhi tool pack and use the command in the package instead.

I have a second dockstar and updated uboot from 2011.12 to 2017.07-tld-1. Same error when I try fw_setenv ethaddr.

When I tried to set ethaddr directly in uboot (netcat) I got a strange output

Think about it. netcosnole relies on the MAC address to establish network connection. So you should not able change it while connecting with netconsole.

Changing the ethaddr in Debian should be OK. After you reboot, u-boot will read the ethaddr env and then establish network connection.

If you cannot change ethaddr in Debian, that's a whole different story.

The new DTB enable read/write access to mtd0, so changing ethaddr in Debian is allowed. If that is not enabled, then perhaps you are not booting with the new DTB.

Ok. Then let's focus on changing ethaddr from within debian.
I think this is the latest dtb:

Connect serial console and let it boot.

Log into Debian and

cat /proc/mtd
fw_printenv

Post the entire serial console log (from u-boot banner up until this point).

Please post these output here inside code tags.

If I cannot see the solution after examining the above output, then there must be something in your own system that has prevented it. Nobody else has this problem with the new DTB.

Since I don't have access to my Dockstar, I will need a different user to confirm whether they can set their ethaddr to a different value of their own choosing.

Did you try the Bodhi tool pack method? It's Christmas and I had some time to upgrade my PogoPro's uboot to the latest version. On ProBox #1, I didn't have this problem when I used fw_setenv ethaddr. On ProBox #2, I met similar problem. I solved it by using Bodhi's toolpack method.

BTW, box1 and box2, the system is the same.
