Hi,
in the last week my old Stora won't boot anymore. After that I've follow different tutorial and I've dump the u-boot log with a USB to TTL serial converter.

It seems that the configuration of the u-boot has been lost.

Any suggestions??

Thanks.

Yes. Looks like the envs area was corrupted.

I guess it is depending whether you want to install and run new u-boot and Debian. Or stay with what you have in this system and just try to fix the problem.

Whichever you decided, I think you should attempt to run kwboot to load the new Stora u-boot (uboot.2017.07-tld-1.netgear_ms2110.mtd0.kwb) from the u-boot release thread.

An example to to unbrick the NSA320S with kwboot is here:
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,51739,51919#msg-51919

Once you can load the new u-boot and run it, you can be assure there is a recovery path. And then decide where you want to go next (fix the error or install new Debian system).

Fixing the error is not without risk. Since this stock u-boot is quite old, I'm not sure the env reset will work. If it does not work, you need to find the stock Stora u-boot envs and type them in at u-boot console.

Hi Bodhi,
thanks for the reply.

I've try to upload the latest uboot image and this is the output.
pi@raspberrypi:~/kwboot-tool $ ./kwboot -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0 -b uboot.2017.07-tld-1.netgear_ms2110.mtd0.kwb -p

Where can i find a different uboot image??

After some search I've find a stock list of env. How can I write it on NAND?
I've try setenv but this is the results...

Marvell>> setenv baudrate 115200

Try the ARM kwboot binary I've attached to this post:

Hi bodhi,
Nice job!!! Whith the new kwboot my stora boot!!
I've try to start linux with the rootfs Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2.
Unfortunately the boot stop at this point
....
....
Begin: Waiting for root file system ... done.
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-label/rootfs does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Tomorrow I'll try to solve this problem on a new usb drive.

Which is the next step to install the new uboot?
Boot on Debian and follow this thread.
Only a question, do I have to perform step 8?

Thank

Cool!

Check your USB rootfs partition label, make sure that it is rootfs.

I need to see the serial console log.

- kwboot the new u-boot
- At u-boot prompt, set u-boot envs to boot the STORA like you did before. And list the envs. And then boot.

printenv
boot

Let it boot until the error. And copy and paste the entire serial console log here.

DirkPitt,

There are a couple of problems.

1. The rootfs was not properly created. Let's look at it.

Mount this UB rootfs on another Linux box, and assuming it is /media/sdb1

mount
cd /media/sdb1
e2label /dev/sdb1
ls -l /media/sdb1
ls -lart /media/boot

2. There is a typo in the env

dtb_file=/boot/dts/kirkwood-netgear_stora_ms2000

should be
dtb_file=/boot/dts/kirkwood-netgear_stora_ms2000.dtb

Hi,
I've fix the issue....
1: Create a new USB roots

2: Stop the u-boot and change the env dtb_file

Netgear Stora> setenv dtb_file /boot/dts/kirkwood-netgear_stora_ms2000.dtb

Now I'm on debian login

Cool!

Something strange with your NAND. The kernel showed a lot of bad blocks. And the env block address does not make sense

If I search bad block with uboot nand bad command I find:
Netgear Stora> nand bad
Device 0 bad blocks:
  048a0000
  076c0000
  0b560000
My stora boot only with kwboot. What do you think if I try to perform a NAND reset using nand scrub or a nand erase command? Could this solve the issue??

Thanks

Dirkpitt

Dirkpitt,

Since you can only boot with kwboot, it does not hurt to try nand scrub. After scrubbing, boot into Debian and see if you can flash the new u-boot to make it permanent.

As it is right now, the kernel does seem to get a misleading NAND info after initializing so it is useless anyway.

Hi Bodhi,
I've perform a nand scrub and now no Bad eraseblock.
dmesg | grep -i 'bad'
[ 8.865697] Scanning device for bad blocks
Strange thing because on uboot I've this output
Netgear Stora> nand bad
Device 0 bad blocks:
  048a0000
  076c0000
  0b560000

I'm trying to flash the uboot having this issue
root@debian:~/tools# ./flash_erase /dev/mtd0 0 4
flash_erase: error!: /dev/mtd0
             error 13 (Permission denied)
root@debian:~/tools# ./nandwrite /dev/mtd0 uboot.2017.07-tld-1.netgear_ms2110.mtd0.kwb
nandwrite: error!: /dev/mtd0
           error 13 (Permission denied)
Is the NAND in read only mode. On debian I'm logged as root...

It should be writeable.

Please post
dmesg
cat /proc/mtd

Re: NETGEAR STORA - Bad Magic Number
February 03, 2019 12:08PM
Dirk,

mtd is not initialized correctly yet.

[ 8.885979] Creating 3 MTD partitions on "orion_nand":
[ 8.891155] 0x000000000000-0x000000100000 : "uboot"
[ 8.896085] mtd: partition "uboot" doesn't end on an erase block -- force rey
[ 8.905356] 0x000000100000-0x000000500000 : "kernel"
[ 8.910353] mtd: partition "kernel" doesn't start on an erase block boundaryy
[ 8.920659] 0x000000500000-0x000010000000 : "rootfs"
[ 8.925709] mtd: partition "rootfs" doesn't start on an erase block boundaryy

So even though the definition is OK. It still not writeable.

root@debian:~/tools# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 00100000 00400000 "uboot"
mtd1: 00400000 00400000 "kernel"
mtd2: 0fb00000 00400000 "rootfs"

Let me think of something to try.

Re: NETGEAR STORA - Bad Magic Number
February 04, 2019 04:22AM
Dirk,

kwboot again, and interrupt serial console, setenv for the DTB like you did, and also redefine mtdparts

setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=orion_nand:1M(uboot),4M@(kernel),-(rootfs)'
and boot
boot

In Debian

cat /proc/mtd
And try flashing u-boot again.

Please post the entire serial console log if there were errors.

Re: NETGEAR STORA - Bad Magic Number

Still something not right here. I am wondering if the NAND chip was misidentified. Most of the STORA log that I've seen, the Samsung chip is SLC and the erased block size is 128K.

[ 8.909289] nand: device found, Manufacturer ID: 0xec, Chip ID: 0xda

[ 8.910904] 0x000000400000-0x000010000000 : "rootfs"

That could be a problem.

Try to play with some nand commands in u-boot prompt to see if you can find out more info about the nand chip/partition.

At u-boot prompt,
help

Re: NETGEAR STORA - Bad Magic Number
February 04, 2019 05:13PM
Hi Bodhi,
some progress....
I've make some search.. The nand partition must start and end up with a multiple of erase size.
My stora have
[ 8.840842] nand: device found, Manufacturer ID: 0xec, Chip ID: 0xda
[ 8.847357] nand: Samsung NAND 256MiB 3,3V 8-bit
[ 8.851997] nand: 256 MiB, MLC, erase size: 4096 KiB, page size: 4096, OOB size: 128
I've modify the mtdpart like this
setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=orion_nand:12288K(uboot),53248k@12288k(kernel),-(rootfs)'
An after kwboot this is the boot log..
[ 8.871600] Scanning device for bad blocks
[ 8.879893] 3 cmdlinepart partitions found on MTD device orion_nand
[ 8.886215] Creating 3 MTD partitions on "orion_nand":
[ 8.891392] 0x000000000000-0x000000c00000 : "uboot"
[ 8.897877] 0x000000c00000-0x000004000000 : "kernel"
[ 8.904455] 0x000004000000-0x000010000000 : "rootfs"
Now I've follow your guide..
Erase partition
root@debian:~/tools# ./flash_erase /dev/mtd0 0 4
Erasing 4096 Kibyte @ 800000 -- 50 % complete libmtd: error!: bad eraseblock number 3, mtd0 has 3 eraseblocks
flash_erase: error!: /dev/mtd0: MTD get bad block failed
             error 22 (Invalid argument)
root@debian:~/tools# ./flash_erase /dev/mtd0 0 3
Erasing 4096 Kibyte @ 800000 -- 100 % complete
Write uboot to NAND
root@debian:~/tools# ./nandwrite /dev/mtd0 uboot.2017.07-tld-1.netgear_ms2110.mtd0.kwb
Writing data to block 0 at offset 0x0
Erase and write env to NAND
root@debian:~/tools# ./flash_erase /dev/mtd0 0xc0000 1
Erasing 4096 Kibyte @ 0 -- 100 % complete
root@debian:~/tools# ./nandwrite -s 786432 /dev/mtd0 uboot.2016.05-tld-1.environment.img
Writing data to block 0 at offset 0x0
Reboot

The stora won't boot :(

I think that the large erase size delete too much data.
Can I change the erase size?

Other suggestions??

Thank a lot.

Dirk Pitt

OPS... I've find the same... too late.

Re: NETGEAR STORA - Bad Magic Number
February 04, 2019 05:26PM
Dirk,

Assuming the NAND info is correct in the kernel boot log, we can try this.

All we care is the mtd0 for u-boot. And we don't care about the envs yet at this point.

kwboot again, in serial console,

setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=orion_nand:4M(uboot),-(rootfs)'
and boot into Debian.

There should be 2 mtd partitions
cat /proc/mtd

And flash it.

./flash_erase /dev/mtd0 0 0
./nandwrite /dev/mtd0 uboot.2017.07-tld-1.netgear_ms2110.mtd0.kwb

And reboot.

If there was error during the nandwrite above, we'll adjust to it.

Re: NETGEAR STORA - Bad Magic Number
February 06, 2019 12:18PM
Hi Dirk,

So there is possibility that the kernel misidentifed the flash type (because it was too messed up). We can try to flash u-boot in serial console, assuming what we saw was correct that the block size is 128K.

1. Copy the u-boot image uboot.2017.07-tld-1.netgear_ms2110.mtd0.kwb to the top folder of the usb rootfs. Plug in the rootfs.
2. Run kwboot and interrupt serial console.
3. Set mtdparts to the way we want it.

setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=orion_nand:1M(uboot),-(rootfs)'
mtdinfo
mtdparts

Check the output above to make sure we have the 1st partition mtd0 as 1MB. And the block size is 128K.

usb start
ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /uboot.2017.07-tld-1.netgear_ms2110.mtd0.kwb
nand erase 0x0 0x80000
nand write.e 0x800000 0x0 0x80000

If there was error in the above, stop and post the entire serial console log. If there was no error then

reset
See if the newly flashed u-boot is now running. And also post serial console log for future reference.

Hi Bodhi,

Now my Stora boot and load debian.
I've follow your suggested step with some tweak.
This is the complete log.
pi@raspberrypi:~/kwboot-tool $ ./kwboot_1 -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0 -b uboot.2017.07-tld-1.netgear_ms2110.mtd0.kwb -p

debian login:

I think without env nandEcc = 1 the data will become inconsistent and uboot can not be loaded.

The system still not recognize the correct NAND chip with and so I can't modify its content from the OS.

Please look at the log and tell me if there is something else to fix?

Tahnks

Re: NETGEAR STORA - Bad Magic Number

Dirk,

Cool! u-boot is now permanent.

The mtdparts is not correct yet.

[ 0.000000] Kernel command line: console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 mtdparts=orion_nand:1m(uboot),4m@1m(kernel),251m@5m(rootfs) rw

Run piccom or minicom as serial console server.

Power up, interrupt serial console and

setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=orion_nand:1M(uboot),-(rootfs)'
boot

If the kernel still identifies the chip as MLC with 4096 KiB sector, I'd suggest you open the box and look at the NAND chip marking to make sure that it is really SLC or MLC. And then we'll go from there.
