NSA325v2 bad block, can I flash it?
February 08, 2019 02:08AM
Hello,

first of all I have to admit I have no experience with flashing u-boot, this is my first time doing it so I want to be as careful as possible. Why am I doing it? Well, I tried to update my stock OS to newer version (4.81 i think), but somehow the update was unsuccessfull and now my NAS is not booting, I connected serial console to see where is the problem and it stops at
Quote

*** glibc detected *** /sbin/zyshd: double free or corruption (!prev): 0x00255f08 ***
I tried to reset nas to defaults, but it does not help. I found some topics on google about restoring original OS but all post refer to some dead links so I had no luck there. After that I decided to install debian so I can have some freedom with my system.

I followed guide here https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096 and installed
Quote

Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2
on the USB and tried to boot that, but as I expected it does not work without changing the boot loader.

After that I read the guide here https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,12381 and saw that there cant be bad blocks in NAND or I will definitely brick my device. I cant boot my system but from serial console I see output
Quote

Bad block at 0xc80000 in erase block from 0xc80000 will be skipped
I think it's not in the first 1M but I'm not sure. Also, the guide assumes I am able to boot up the system to use some commands, is it possible to flash u-boot when I'm unable to boot up ?

I saw the part about UART booting but NSA325(v2) is not listed in supported devices, so I dont know if I should try it, but it seems like a safe precaution before flashing on NAND. I will post serial output while booting up with debian USB stick inserted below.

So tl;dr - am I safe to proceed and try UART booting and, if successfull, flashing the uboot.2017.07-tld-1.nsa325.bodhi.tar on NAND?

Here is the boot log, I printed the important (I think) parts in bold.

Also, the guide assumes I am able to boot up the system to use some commands, is it possible to flash u-boot when I'm unable to boot up ?

Actually I think I misunderstood that part in the guide, those commands are executed in serial console after interrupting autoboot right?

Re: NSA325v2 bad block, can I flash it?
February 08, 2019 12:48PM
Dyce,

Certainly you can flash u-boot in serial console. However, the best way is to do UART booting with kwboot first, and boot Debian on USB. And then flash it inside Debian.

See this post for how to run kwboot:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,51739,51919#msg-51919

- Prepare the USB rootfs using Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 from the kernel/rootfs release thread.
- Run kwboot using the image uboot.2017.07-tld-1.nsa325.mtd0.kwb from the u-boot released thread.

After booting into Debian, follow the instruction to flash u-boot in Debian.

BTW, that bad block is so far away from the 1st MB, so it is safe to flash.

Hello again,

Thank you for help, I was able to get one step further, successfully used kwboot and get the box to boot from USB, but now I am stuck here
Michal-NB boot # kwboot -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0 -b '/home/michal/Desktop/uboot.2017.07-tld-1.nsa325.mtd0.kwb' -p

That's correct.

DTB should not be appended when you boot with new u-boot (that was the problem in your last boot).

Restore the original uImage, and try booting again.

Run kwboot. Interrupt serial console, and

printenv
boot

Please post entire serial console log here.

Hello again,

I restored the original uImage and boot using that, here is the console output, which is for some reason different than what I had previously (before appending DTB), I have no idea why... Anyway, here it is:
Michal-NB ~ # kwboot -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0 -b '/home/michal/Desktop/uboot.2017.07-tld-1.nsa325.mtd0.kwb' -p
Sending boot message. Please reboot the target...-

Re: NSA325v2 bad block, can I flash it?

Dyce,

Now the kernel is booting correctly. But your rootfs has problem.

Did you remember to be root user while you create the rootfs? (sudo is not enough while you are extracting to rootfs using tar).

Re: NSA325v2 bad block, can I flash it?

Hello,

I used "su" command to log in as root user. I suppose that is enough right? Then I used gparted to set up the USB according to instructions. I am going to redo it again from scratch, just in case I did something wrong. I will edit this reply after with result.

Edit: Okay, I was now able to boot into debian, here is the console output. I will try to flash uboot now and will write here again if I need any help. Thank you so far for your assistance!

Edit: just a quick question, see output below
root@debian:/tmp# fw_printenv ethaddr
Warning: Bad CRC, using default environment
ethaddr=00:00:11:22:33:44
root@debian:/tmp#

Should I be concerned about that "bad CRC" message or am I safe to proceed?

Edit: after using fw_printenv from the tools you provided on dropbox, I see this output
root@debian:/tmp/tools# ./fw_printenv ethaddr
Warning: Bad CRC, using default environment
## Error: "ethaddr" not defined

That's OK. Since you are booting wit kwboot, and have not flashed u-boot and its envs image. You can go ahead with other steps.

That printenv for ethaddr works as a sanity check when you install u-boot inside stock OS.

Hello again,

thank you very much for you help! I successfully flashed u-boot and was able to boot debian from USB. Have a nice day and keep up the amazing work you are doing!

edit: any idea on how I can get my data from HDD's (raid1) ? debian lists the partitions as unknown type

If you have saved mtd0 as I instructed, you can use kwboot to boot back to stock and copy the data.

Quote

3. Be sure to save your current uBoot image in mtd0, or have a backup image saved somewhere as precaution. And save your current u-boot envs with fw_printenv, or just copy/paste the listing into a text file. Note the nanddump command below allows future restoration to the same box you're backing up, and also can be used to restore a differrent box's mtd0 if needed.

Dumping NAND mtd0:
nanddump --noecc --omitoob -l 0x80000 -f mtd0 /dev/mtd0

kwboot -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0 -b mtd0 -p

My stock system was not booting, so that was not option for me anyway, but when I connected the second disk, debian recognized it is a raid1 array and automagically created the raid1 for me, I just had to mount it and all of my data is there. Thank you again for all the help and sorry for bothering you with so many questions. Have a nice day and THANK YOU once more!

Can you help me fix this?

This error seems to indicate there is something structurally wrong with you rootfs.

Bring the USB drive to another Linux box and run e2fsck to find and fix error.

If there is any error fixed by e2fsck then after it's done, try booting again.

If there was no error fixed, use a new USB drive and recreate the rootfs using Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2. Or if you prefer, use Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2. Either one should be OK. And boot with it.

Hello bodhi,

sorry for the late reply. After running e2fsc it found so many errors that I was not even surprised it failed to boot after repair. I installed Debian 5.2.9 on USB and it is indeed booting again!

Thank you for saving my NAS (again) and for the amazing hard work you are doing for many of us. I owe you once more!

My pleasure, always happy to hear a success story :)
