Pogoplug E02 no Ethernet after uboot update
November 03, 2019 11:37PM
I recently used the serial port and tftp to update the uboot on a Pogoplug E02 to the 2017.07 U-Boot Kirkwood version. It seemed to go well but the result was no Ethernet port activity after rebooting. I get a brief flash of the port status and speed LEDs after a reset but they're otherwise dark. My router does not notice the Pogoplug and all pings from the Pogoplug fail.

I checked the printenv results and they match the pre-update values: ethact=egig0, ethaddr matches the MAC printed on the Pogoplug sticker, and ipaddr is within the address range of the router. Pluging in a USB stick with Debian boots all the way to the user login (using the serial port) but doesn't seem to make the Ethernet port do anything either.

The Ethernet port did work prior to the uboot update. Any ideas as to what I should be looking for?

Since you have serial console, do this: power up with serial console connected, let it boot all the way into Debian promp. And then post the entire serial console log here.

Something changed over the weekend but I'm not sure what it was. The Pogoplug's Ethernet port decided to light up when I started it today (same cat5 cable, same router) but it's still not working correctly. If I start it with the Debian USB stick, it gets stuck endlessly trying to get an IP address:

From the uboot prompt, I can ping to the router or to other computers from the Pogoplug but it's a one-way street. Other computers cannot ping the Pogoplug. SSH and netconsole just return "host not found". The router (Zyxel) seems to see it fine matching the MAC address with the IP address in its logs. When Debian was trying every IP address there was, the router was dutifully following along with whatever Debian was requesting.

Could this Pogoplug just be plain broken? In its earlier incarnation under Cloud Engines, it was always flakey and usually failed to boot correctly half the time (orange blinky led).
Re: Pogoplug E02 no Ethernet after uboot update

dougdeep,

This should not happen:

mount: only root can use "--no-mtab" option (effective UID is 1000)
....
can't create /var/lib/dhcp/dhclient.eth0.leases: Read-only file system

Your rootfs was not mounted properly for some reason. When it is read-only like that, then there is file system errors.

1. Mount this USB rootfs on another Linux box and check for file system error (assuming the drive is assigned /dev/sdb1).

e2fsck /dev/sdb1
And then enter "yes" to all questions to fix any error. And remember to sync before unmount.

sync

2. Plug it back in to the Pogo and power up. If the DHCP decline errors below still occur
DHCPREQUEST for 192.168.0.15 on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
DHCPNAK from 192.168.200.1
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 8
DHCPOFFER of 192.168.200.170 from 192.168.200.1
DHCPREQUEST for 192.168.200.170 on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
DHCPACK of 192.168.200.170 from 192.168.200.1
DHCPDECLINE of 192.168.200.170 on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67

Then use static IP to see if it is OK to bring up ethernet. Mount it back to other Linux system and modify the rootfs /etc/network/interfaces as followed:

cat ./etc/network/interfaces
auto lo eth0
iface lo inet loopback
#iface eth0 inet dhcp
iface eth0 inet static
        address 192.168.200.125
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        gateway 192.168.200.1

Re: Pogoplug E02 no Ethernet after uboot update

I tried the "e2fsck" and "sync" with no errors but the USB stick Debian would still show a "read only" file system. I was going to try your suggestion about a static IP and put the stick back in my Linux machine. I happened to have Gnome Files open and noticed that the stick had padlock symbols on every folder and sub-folder, so that explains the 'read only' file system.

I reformatted the USB stick and put a freshly downloaded Debian on it. The Pogoplug now booted and got the first IP address it wanted. My router shows the Pogoplug with its "debian" hostname and I could ping back and forth between Pogoplug and desktop. Due to the late hour, I left it there but this is a huge improvement.

Thank you very much for your time.

Glad it was solved that beautifully!
