I've got a 3.5" hard disk handy so I wanted to try hooking it up to my Mele. I have to take apart the case for the connector to fit, but it fits.

However, the drive doesn't spin up when the Mele is powered on. It's a WD Caviar Green, which is supposed to be relatively low power (though probably nothing like your typical 2.5" disk, of course).

Anyone have any thoughts on whether this is supposed to work? I'm pretty sure this isn't what the Mele's designers had in mind, but I figure it's worth a shot since I don't have an external enclosure available.

The sata power connector in the mele doesn't have a 12V line which is needed for 3.5" disks.

You could use the power connector from an external hard drive.
