Which Device to get ?
June 12, 2013 09:46PM
I currently have PogoPlug Pro and was on archlinuxarm but since Pro cannot be moved to later kernel they dropped the support so i went ahead and installed Debian on Pro but its still on 2.6 Kernel , I also have Raspberry Pi which I'm going to sell off since it requires several cables to boot off power, usb huff..

Was thinking of which device would you recommend Seagate GoFlex Net/Home , BeagleBone/Board ?

My primary purpose is mediasharing via DLNA and torrenting.
Re: Which Device to get ?

For your pupose, the GoFlex Home/Net is enough. It's cheaper than the GoFlex Net for the same horse power. The unit itself is cheaper to get, and the GoFlex Desk 3.5" SATA hard disk for it is also cheaper, and it has power button. But if you are using non-GoFlex eSATA enclosure to house the hard disk, then the GoFlex Net is nicer ( you can plug in another eSATA enclosure on the 2nd port), and for something that is on 24/7, hard power button is no longer that useful.

dinjo,

Search on eBay, much cheaper than else where. The GoFlex Home has 1 SATA ports, the Goflex Net has 2 SATA ports.

This one is $40:

A while back there was a sale for $10 refurbished GoFlex Home on eBay. After that it was about $20-25. You could watch eBay, sometime it is availble for $25.

The first one is better. A couple more bucks but you better off with a brand new GoFlex Net. I bought one from this vendor.

dinjo,

This instruction still works fine:
http://projects.doozan.com/debian/

Run the squeeze script (wheezy has problem), and then upgrade to wheezy.

After you've got squeeze running, remember to back up your USB stick before the upgrade. If you encounter problems during the upgarde to wheezy, post back in Debian section, and we'll help.

Can i use my usb hdd ? Want to avoid pen drives and boot and use the sata drive and can i use ext4 ?

Also you mention to install squezy and then update to wheezy i guess u meant to run the wheezy script later ? Or is it ok if i follow the guide which Doncharisma has created ?
Re: Which Device to get ?
October 21, 2013 07:58PM
Yes *MOST* usb storage devices are supported by uboot, I was using a 2.5" for my rootfs for a while but running smb shares from the remainder of the drive was really slooow, i sugest a thumb drive, also ext4 is supported BUT ive had issues with it, i found that i had less issues if i installed to ext3 and upgraded the filesystem to ext4

It's very simple. Install Debian squeeze using Jeff's script with a USB stick. And then upgrade with:

- change apt sources list to point to wheezy (use a source that is close to your location):
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian wheezy main

- upgrade the Debian way:
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade

apt-get dist-upgrade will result in a massive change, so that's why you should backup your squeeze USB right away after successfully booted. In case this dist-upgrade causes problem in booting.

And yes, you can use your HDD later. But don't do it now, because uBoot envs need to be modified to start the HDD, and find rootfs on it.

Thanks bodhi for the reply.

Any advantage of using wheezy over squeeze ? Is it more supported by devs with latest builds coming on wheezy ?

Also i could not find any guide which sequentially explains the entire procedure I looked at your 3.10 kernel thread and as i see the rootfs gets changed too so was thinking can i just go ahead with that rootfs ?
Re: Which Device to get ?
October 22, 2013 01:25AM
Dinjo,

Squeeze is too old, so lots of pakages are not up to date.
Yes, you can use my 3.11.1 rootfs as a starting point, and install packages. Later, you can use apt-get update and apt-get upgrade to get latest packages (not dist-upgrade).

Re: Which Device to get ?
October 22, 2013 03:12AM
Thanks again bodhi , so this what I'm going to do

Steps

1. Use a new 8GB pen drive format in 2 swap and data
2. Run the squeeze script and i guess it would call Uboot in itself no need to run seperately it would also give the initial rootfs with 3.x kernel ?

cd /tmp
wget http://projects.doozan.com/debian/dockstar.debian-squeeze.sh
chmod +x dockstar.debian-squeeze.sh
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/sbin:/sbin
./dockstar.debian-squeeze.sh

3. Update to wheezy by adding wheezy source in sources.list and not running the wheezy script.
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade

4. Post here with errors ;-) Can you mention what all can i expect I'm sure people would have already gone through the pain.

5. Install Rescue system , I'm confused here since what if I'm not able to boot after the previous step shouldn't i be installing rescue before the reboot ?

6. Install NetConsole , how do i keep my Windows PC address to be static ?

7. Install new kernel , use new rootfs and install other pkgs

What all I need to do once I have being able to boot from SATA i.e what env variables needs to be changed and how to copy rootfs correctly to SATA drive

Steps 1 through 4 above: should be no errors. But if you encounter problem, most likely because of uImage and uInitrd are not created on the USB stick /boot directory. But when that happen, just use a new USB stick, copy my rootfs 3.11.1 to it per instruction, and boot with it.

Step 5: I don't install this rescue system, because it is not actively maintained by the author. So I always skip this.

Step 6: highly recommended. Netconsole will save you a lot of trouble, if you don't have serial console. Static IP on Windows PC is quite simple. Go to the Network adapter and set it (I am sure Google will turn up instruction). If not, post back.

Step 7: once you've booted wheezy, either your own rootfs or my uploaded 3.11.1, then there are plenty of instructions in this forum.

4. I guess its only when i do the apt-get upgrade and apt-dist upgrade then there is a chance of breaking if it does i guess the script has done everything else except for updating the packages , just copy your rootfs and update the kernel.

5. Which rescue system do you recommend ?

6. Will take care of Static IP in windows

7. I'll follow this only if i dont receive any error.

In what interval should i be rebooting the device i.e after step 4 i.e do step 5 after reboot ?

Lastly do i need to change the arcnumber manually ? As i looked at the script at first run it does set to dockstar arcnumber

Re: Which Device to get ?

dinjo,

If you have not rebooted, then set up netconsole first. And then use 3.11.1 my rootfs to boot.
Once you're successfully booted, if not yet have netconsole then set it up the first thing.
Only after it is running OK, then you can change arcNumber to the GoFlex Net.

Now I understand why no one has responded. It was easy. A few minor things but if you can read, you can make it work. How very nube of me.
